Recharge Wrap-up: Mercedes gets F1 efficiency, EV charging in Vermont, VW e-Golf to use Bosch

Efficiency equals performance, especially in the case of Formula 1 racing. The Mercedes AMC Petronas team points to several key efficiency technologies it uses to get the most out of its cars. And if their utter dominance so far this season is testament to this relationship, perhaps we should pay attention. Mercedes highlights hybrid tech, turbocharging, aerodynamics, lightweight construction, tribology (both in making internal components and lubricants more slippery) and simulation as crucial to getting around the track faster than anyone else. These just happen to be some of the same things that make the cars we drive on public roads more fuel-efficient. Learn more in the press release below. It's a good read. Brammo, maker of sweet electric motorcycles, is teaming up with TEAM Industries to make drivetrains for electric vehicles. TEAM, which specializes in drivetrain technology, will also become an investor in Brammo as part of the partnership. "The electric vehicle market is a growth market," says TEAM CEO and President David Ricke, "and TEAM and Brammo will be providing a wide range of solutions for OEM manufacturers." Read more over at EV World. Vermont celebrated the installation of a new EV charging station as part of a Green Energy Corridor between Boston and Montreal. When finished, drivers will be able to make the whole trip in an EV with access to charging along the way. For $5, customers can charge their vehicle in about 30 minutes at the Red Hen Baking Company in Middlesex. There are currently only about 700 EVs on the road in Vermont. The state has a goal to get 90 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2050, and getting more EVs on the road is crucial to that mission. Vermont hopes that expanding the charging infrastructure will convince more people to go electric. Read more at Vermont Public Radio's website. For it's new e-Golf, Volkswagen will use Bosch chargers for home installation and ChargePoint stations at its dealerships. Bosch will have various 240-volt options for the home, and will also provide installation. e-Golf customers will also get a free ChargePoint membership, and will have access to the company's network of charging stations worldwide. Consumer Reports selling its road-tested roadsters [w/video]

Here's a chance to acquire a celebrity-owned vehicles, and this time at a discount instead of a premium. So the celebrity in this case is Consumer Reports, that magazine that could be equally adored and abhored by car enthusiasts. CR buys all of its test vehicles and usually finds willing second owners within its own ranks, but its opening its small used-car lot to the public. On the forecourt are four roadsters: an automatic 2012 Audi TT 2.0 TFSI Quattro S-Tronic with 6,600 miles for $36,500, a manual 2012 BMW Z4 sDrive28i with 8,400 miles for $45,000, a manual 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK250 for $39,500 and a manual 2013 Porsche Boxster with 7,000 miles for $48,000.
Those numbers mean a savings of $9,000 to $10,000 before haggling - each car is listed with an "Asking price" so there could be some wiggle room if you show up with pockets full of dough and eyes full of serious intent. Since the money CR earns from the sales go back into the magazine's budget to buy more test cars, however, it probably won't take any oddball trades, so you can forget about getting any purchasing help from that track-day AMC Javelin project on blocks in the back yard.
The vehicles have been taken care of and spiffed up for sale; buyers will take delivery at the CR test track in East Haddam, Connecticut and get a tour of the facilities. While you're there they'll even take you on a lap around the track so you can feel how your car handles when driven by one of its testers. They will probably not help you with advice on which toaster and dehumidifier to buy - you'll still need to get a subscription for that. Mercedes-Maybach previews longer, more lavish S-Class ahead of debut

In some international markets, Mercedes-Benz's new 2021 S-Class will get Level 3 semi-autonomous technology, but chauffeur-driven buyers already enjoy full autonomy. It's for these individuals that Mercedes-Maybach, the firm's extra-luxury division, stretched the sedan's wheelbase and gave it an interior worthy of a private jet. Maybach said it developed its variant of the 2021 S-Class specifically for buyers with a chauffeur. It added seven inches to the sedan's wheelbase, and the additional sheet metal benefits those riding in the back. Standard executive rear seats give passengers a comfortable place to work or rest while they're being driven, and the list of new features added to the sedan include massaging calf rests as well as heating for the neck and shoulders. Although we haven't seen Maybach's S-Class yet, a preview image shows the optional two-tone paint — one of the company's hallmarks — and a chromed Maybach emblem. Up front, it will receive a specific grille with vertical slats instead of the horizontal ones worn by the standard S-Class. An additional serving of chrome-look trim will almost certainly further set the Maybach apart, but it will retain its predecessor's relatively subtle design. Specifications won't be announced until the model's unveiling. Mercedes-Benz confirmed it's phasing out V12s, though the big engine could return for one final round under the hood of the S-Class. Alternatively, Maybach may have chosen to surf the downsizing wave still sweeping across the industry by selecting a 4.0-liter V8. Mercedes-Maybach will introduce the 2021 S-Class online on November 19 at 2 p.m. Stuttgart time, which is 8 a.m. in New York City and 5 a.m. in Los Angeles. Deliveries are scheduled to start during the first half of 2021. When it lands, the sedan will join Maybach's variant of the GLS in showrooms across the United States. Related Video:
