The 2000 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (S430 and S500) is one of the world's most technologically advanced production vehicles. Never mind that it's smaller, lighter and more efficient than the last generation S-Class, the part that's fun is trying to discover all of its special features.

Two hours perusing the owners manual is all it took to intuitively master the multitude of switches, buttons and controls on our test S500.

OUTSIDE -The new S-Class looks smaller and slimmer than before. It's still classified by the EPA as a large car, but the wheelbase and overall length are both over two inches shorter than the previous model, and it's 1.3 inches narrower. The shorter overhangs and a lower beltline contribute to this effect. Softened contours, gently sculpted hood line and sweeping headlights give it a sleek coupe-like appearance in an efficient four-door package. Attention to aerodynamics paid off in a low 0.27 coefficient of drag. Mercedes offers its "designo" trim series with most of its model lines, and the S-Class is the latest to receive this treatment. With the S-Class, adding the package gives the choice of either Espresso or Silver paint, along with a host of interior features.

INSIDE -The front and rear seats are redesigned and covered in rich "Nappa" leather upholstery. The padding is firm (a Mercedes trademark), but overall, very supportive. On long trips, a Mercedes leaves the driver almost refreshed. The dashboard is filled with buttons to operate various gadgets and gizmos, with a small TV-like screen in the center that displays the navigation system operated from satellites. It also displays the audio and built-in telephone prompts. The whole integrated system is called COMAND (Cockpit Management and Data). The standard dual zone climate control system includes exterior sensors to monitor various weather conditions, while a superb Bose-brand sound system can be packaged with an optional trunk-mounted six-disc CD changer. Heated, 14-way power front seats are standard, as is cruise control, power tilt/telescoping steering column, variable speed wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirrors and a sliding/pop-up glass sunroof.

ON THE ROAD -The latest S-Class is powered by a new modular V8. The S430 uses a 4.3 liter version, while the S500 offers up 5.0 liters. Both use a single camshaft on each cylinder head, along with three valves per cylinder. Depending on engine load, two plugs fire with a short time gap, at the same time alternating between the two for better combustion efficiencies and less noise. The S500 has 302 horsepower, which is down a bit from the last version, and 339 pound-feet of torque. It launches off-line quite well and gives impressive 0-60 mph times. Passing power is even better, with plenty of pull left well after the speed limit has been exceeded. Mated to this engine is a five-speed automatic transmission that "learns" the piloting patterns of its driver, and a Winter/Sport button gives the driver the choice of more traction on slippery roads or sport shift points. Traction control is standard.

BEHIND THE WHEEL -The unit body platform of the new S-Class is quieter and stiffer than the version it replaced, and extensive use of aluminum parts has trimmed 500 pounds off the car. The four-wheel independent suspension uses what Mercedes calls "AIRmatic," an air-ride and active damping system that keeps the car level at all times. To maintain directional stability, the company has added an Electronic Stability Program (ESP). This system uses special sensors to detect a slide, then makes adjustments to the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and the traction control system to bring the car back under control. The system doesn't eliminate accidents, but it helps the driver avoid potential problems. A new rack-and-pinion steering system replaces the old model's recirculating-ball setup to give a lighter, more accurate feel. Four-wheel, vented disc brakes (cross-drilled in front) are standard

Maybach officially discontinues all models for 2013

Tue, 14 Aug 2012

The word "Maybach" has joined the long list of synonyms for the word "kaput." Mercedes-Benz released the price list for the 2013 models of its super-luxury sedans, with the price column simply stating "Discontinued" for each one of them.
The 2012 models, should there be any left for 11th-hour buyers, maintain the increased MSRPs that Daimler slapped on them late last year after it was known the brand would be terminated next year. But you might still be able to wrangle that $100,000 rebate if you ask nicely, or in Russian, or have Rick Ross ask for you.
It shouldn't be too long before we see the ultimate version of the next generation S-Class, the S600 Pullman, that will replace Maybach. Intriguingly, it's said the Pullman will be offered with every S-Class engine, even the four-cylinder diesel.

Mercedes S-Class Magic Body Control ad is clucking awesome

Tue, 24 Sep 2013

This is a new ad from Mercedes-Benz. At no point does it show an automobile. Instead, it stars animals, but not the sort you might normally see in car commercial. This ad is all about chickens. It is bizarre, to say the least, with Diana Ross and the Supremes belting it out in the background, but it all kind of comes together when you realize just what Mercedes is hawking (yeah, pun intended).
It's for the manufacturer's Magic Body Control, found on the new S-Class. The system basically analyzes the road and prepares the suspension accordingly, leading to a ride that is, in the words of our own Chris Paukert "nothing short of spooky." You can read about it in our full review of the 2014 S550. Take a look below for the 53-second spot.

Mercedes-Maybach Pullman stretches its way to Geneva

Wed, Feb 18 2015

Mercedes-Benz is known the world over for producing luxury automobiles, but even among Benzes there's a hierarchy. The S-Class sits at the top of the Mercedes range, the Maybach at the top of the S-Class, and what you see here sits at the top of the Maybach line. It's the new Pullman limousine, and it arrives on the 50th anniversary of the original. Stretching a massive 21.3 feet, the new Mercedes-Maybach Pullman is even longer than the previous Maybach 62 by a full foot, and a good 3.5 feet longer than the standard-wheelbase Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, or two feet longer than the G63 AMG 6x6. In other terms, it's over a foot longer than the Rolls-Royce Phantom EWB, and the better part of a yard longer than even the Cadillac Escalade ESV. Heck, you could just about fit Benz's other flagship, the Mercedes-AMG GT, inside the new Pullman's 14.5-foot wheelbase. As if that's not enough, it also stands 3.9 inches higher than a standard S-Class to the benefit of its imposing presence and interior space. Should you be so fortunate as to be graced with an invitation to step inside, you'd find an interior entirely clad in leather with four seats: two recliners and two fold-down seats facing backwards. Those principal rear seats can recline between 19 and 43.5 degrees and offer an extensive array of individual adjustments to cater just-so to the occupants' individual preferences. Ingress and egress are enabled by larger rear doors that open in front of – instead of next to – those rear seats to enhance the privacy of the traveling dignitaries, who will be able to monitor the state of affairs through the analog thermometer, speedometer and clock mounted in the roof liner. They'll also enjoy privacy thanks to the electrically operated glass partition wall with an 18.5-inch monitor mounted in front of it and a choice of Burmester sound systems. Long the favorite of heads of state and captains of industry, the new Pullman will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show now just weeks away. We don't doubt that Mercedes will offer its customers a choice of engine options (as long as they're capable of motivating the new Pullman's assuredly substantial heft), but most suitable to the task will of course be the 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 with its 523 horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque.
