1992 Mercedes 500e.  169,500 miles, mainly freeway.  Always starts with one-click of the key.  Excellent condition.  No visible rust on exterior or underneath the car.  Bought it with the intent of bringing the car up to excellent working order and it kept me busy all winter.  Car is now in great shape and nothing left to do for me, therefore it is for sale.  I like buying unique cars that are diamonds in the rough and need some TLC, working on them to bring them up to my standards, then selling them.  Just a hobby and I usually do this once a year in the winter.  I fully registered the car here in Connecticut and brought it through the emissions and inspection process.  It passed with flying colors.

Runs and drives great.  Transmission shifts smooth and goes into every gear.  Everything works such as the sunroof, power windows, central locking system, heat, including the A/C which blows very cold.  ASR light comes on once in a while, not sure why.  Sometimes with the A/C on, the idle will stumble/hesitate a bit.

Self Leveling Suspension was replaced with Koni Yellow adjustable sport shocks, at all 4 corners as the SLS lines were leaking. Just had lower cladding & front lower spoiler repainted and entire car wet sanded and polished. Car has been repainted once before, and they did a superior job.  Previous owner gave me a good history of maintenance on this car, but things I have done to it since my ownership:
  • New upper wiring harness installed at 168,000 miles
  • New thermostat installed at 168,500 miles
  • 4 New Koni Yellow shocks installed at 169,000 miles (retained factory springs)
  • 4 Wheel alignment performed at 169,000 miles
  • 2 New front shock mounts at 169,000 miles
  • Factory calipers painted red at 169,000 miles
  • New Rear Lower Control Arm Bushings installed at 169,000 miles
  • New Kenwood CD player installed (retained factory speakers) at 169,000 miles
  • 4 New Michelin Pilot Sport Tires (245/45/18 and 275/40/18) installed at 169,000 miles - Factory 8-hole wheels with nearly new Kuhmo tires included in sale
  • 4 Cosmetically refinished factory AMG wheels installed at 169,000 miles
  • Included in sale will be a Mercedes specific Code Reader and Manual
Driver seat has slight tear from normal wear in left bolster, which I had re-stitched.  Looks fine, just wanted to note that.

8 automakers, 15 utilities collaborate on open smart-charging for EVs

Thu, Jul 31 2014

We're going to lead with General Motors here. GM is one of eight automakers working with 15 utilities and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) at developing a "smart" plug-in vehicle charging system. Why did we start with GM? Because it's the first automaker whose press release we read that mentioned the other seven automakers. Points for sharing. For the record, the collaboration also includes BMW, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Chrysler, Mitsubishi and Ford. The utilities include DTE Energy, Duke Energy, Southern California Edison and Pacific Gas & Electric. The idea is to develop a so-called "demand charging" system in which an integrated system lets the plug-ins and utilities communicate with each other so that vehicle charging is cut back at peak hours, when energy is most expensive, and ramped up when the rates drop. Such entities say there's a sense of urgency to develop such a system because the number of plug-in vehicles on US roads totals more than 225,000 today and is climbing steadily. There's a lot of technology involved, obviously, but the goal is to have an open platform that's compatible with virtually any automaker's plug-in vehicle. No timeframe was disclosed for when such a system could go live but you can find a press release from EPRI below. EPRI, Utilities, Auto Manufacturers to Create an Open Grid Integration Platform for Plug-in Electric Vehicles PALO ALTO, Calif. (July 29, 2014) – The Electric Power Research Institute, 8 automakers and 15 utilities are working to develop and demonstrate an open platform that would integrate plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) with smart grid technologies enabling utilities to support PEV charging regardless of location. The platform will allow manufacturers to offer a customer-friendly interface through which PEV drivers can more easily participate in utility PEV programs, such as rates for off-peak or nighttime charging. The portal for the system would be a utility's communications system and an electric vehicle's telematics system. As the electric grid evolves with smarter functionality, electric vehicles can serve as a distributed energy resource to support grid reliability, stability and efficiency. With more than 225,000 plug-in vehicles on U.S. roads -- and their numbers growing -- they are likely to play a significant role in electricity demand side management.

Elephant with an itch to scratch uses cars for relief

Thu, Jan 15 2015

Sometimes in life you, get an itch in a place that you need some help to scratch it. That feeling apparently goes for elephants as well as humans. A pachyderm at the Khao Yai National Park in Thailand recently had some serious comfort in its rump. Unfortunately, the giant animal chose several passing vehicles to alleviate the problem. Things start out rather cute with the elephant rubbing its enormous behind on a Mercedes-Benz. However, another vehicle apparently doesn't provide the same level of relief. The animal seems to grow annoyed and starts taking the sedan apart with at least one person inside. The experience must have been mammothly terrifying. According to BBC News, no one was injured, and the odd behavior is being blamed on a result of the elephant's mating season. Male elephants, as well as other male pachyderms, go through a period called the musth, when testosterone levels rise to several times greater than normal in preparation for the mating season. It makes the elephant aggressive, irritable and yes, itchy.

Why all of this year's F1 noses are so ugly [w/video]

Fri, 31 Jan 2014

If you're a serious fan of Formula One, you already know all about The Great Nosecone Conundrum of 2014. Those given to parsing each year's F1 regulations predicted the strong possibility of the so-called "anteater" noses as far back as early December 2013. Highly suggestive visual evidence first came after Caterham's crash test in early January, with further proof coming as soon as Williams showed a rendering of the FW36 challenger for this year's championship. That car earned a name that wasn't nearly so kind as "anteater."
Casual followers of the sport - or anyone who gets the feed from this site - probably don't know what's happening, except to wonder why the current year's F1 cars are led by appendages that would make Cyrano de Bergerac feel a whole lot better about himself.
The short answer to the question of ugsome F1 noses is "FIA regulations and safety." The reason there are various kinds of ugsome noses is simpler: engineers. The same boffins who have given us advances including carbon fiber monocoques, six-wheeled cars, double diffusers and Drag Reduction Systems are bred to do everything in their power to exploit every possible freedom in the regulations to make the cars they're building go faster - the caveat being that those advances have to work within the overall philosophy of the whole car.
