1991 Mercedes Benz 560SEL with only 60,000 miles.  The car is finished in Black Pearl Metallic with Gray soft leather upholstery.  It was purchased on 10/6/90 from Estate Motors, Golden's Bridge, NY.  The car has had one owner and ownership will be transferred with the original title.  It has been well cared for and very well preserved.  It is in excellent condition and is an extremely rare find with such low mileage.  This is the last year of the 560SEL, one of the most beautiful cars that Mercedes has ever made.

The exterior of the car is in very good condition.  The paint is in great shape and holds a strong shine.  There is no rust anywhere on the car.  There are some scratches, dings, sap marks, etc, however, far less than you would expect on a car of this age; the most prominent of which is an indentation on the right side of the panel that holds the rear marker plate.  All glass, plastic and trim pieces are in very good shape and have no damage.  The chrome is in excellent condition.  The wheels are also in very good shape.

The interior of the car is in excellent condition.  The leather is in great shape and has no holes or tears in the upholstery.  The original color and finish are bright as a result of having been garaged.  The seats hold their original shape, spring and form.  The headliner sits perfectly with no sign of sag.  There are no cracks in the dash.  The wood is in very good condition, holding a deep bright color and only showing a couple of hairline surface cracks near the shift bezel.  A mobile phone had been installed, however, it has been removed and is in the trunk.  The car has not been smoked in and has no strange odors.  The carpets are free from any noticeable dirt or stains.

Mechanically, the car is in very good condition.  The engine is fast and extremely powerful.  The transmission shifts perfectly smooth.  The steering is tight and there are no strange noises or rattles.  There are no check engine, ABS, air bag etc. lights on.  All interior functions are working with the exception of the locks and the rear passenger window.  Power seats, heated seats (front and rear),  reclining rear seat, sunroof, climate etc. are all working.  Heat is hot and A/C is cold.  The locks do work manually but have lost power operation.  The left, rear window had trouble making it up the last time it was used and I have not used it since.  Also, the antenna will not fully extend, it goes up 2/3 of the way.  The owner's manual and other manuals are present.  The tires have plenty of tread on them.  Front brakes and wheel bearings are brand new.  Lastly, if the car sits for a period of time, the rear feels somewhat bouncy for the first several miles.  When it is used on a regular basis, it is not noticeable.

These cars have a legendary reputation for their comfort, engineering and build quality.  This 560SEL is a very rare find being in very good condition, having extremely low miles and being the right color.  Most examples of this model have not been properly maintained and abused.  This car has been very well preserved and is in very impressive condition.  I have tried to describe the car as thoroughly and accurately as possible.  If you have any further questions, would like specific photos or would like to see the car, please let me know.

2016 German Grand Prix race recap: so-so racing, great questions

Mon, Aug 1 2016

We can summarize the 2016 German Grand Prix in one sentence: Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver Lewis Hamilton started second on the grid, passed pole-sitter and teammate Nico Rosberg before the first corner, and dominate to the finish. In fact, Hamilton turned his engine power output down on Lap 3 and still took the checkered flag seven seconds ahead of Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo. Ricciardo's teammate Max Verstappen crossed the line another six seconds back. Rosberg fell to fourth at the first corner and couldn't find the pace to reel in the Red Bulls. His questionable pass on Verstappen didn't help when the stewards penalized Rosberg five seconds; the overtake reminded us of Rosberg's move on teammate Hamilton in Austria. That penalty turned into eight seconds when the Mercedes-AMG Petronas stopwatch didn't work in the pits. Ferrari pilots Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen finished fifth and sixth. Those six drivers all started in the top six, too. Behind them, on Lap 28 of the 67-lap race the next four drivers were Valtteri Bottas in the Williams, Nico Hulkenberg in the Force India, and Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso in McLarens. Low fuel and old tires put the kibosh on Alonso's pace just four laps from the finish, allowing Force India's Sergio Perez to pass, rounding out the top ten. The issues up for debate during the four-week break are far more interesting than the weekend's race. As bad as Ferrari's day might have been – and we'll get to that – Rosberg probably took the biggest hit, losing the race before the first corner for the second weekend in a row and falling 19 points behind Hamilton. Rosberg won the first four races of the season, then the teammates tripped over one another in Spain. Hamilton's won six of the seven races since Spain, Rosberg's best result in that time is a second-place in Hungary. Hamilton turned his engine down on Lap 3 (!) because he's used his entire season's allotment of five turbochargers and five MGU-Ks. Those early-season gremlins now have him on edge of grid penalties. Unless Hamilton's momentum cools off in August, however, that reliability danger might be the only dent in his armor. Rosberg, who once led the Championship by 43 points, will surely drown in his thoughts – and maybe schnapps – over the summer break. Whatever the Italian word for "meditation" is, there'll be a lot of it at Ferrari during the F1 summer break.

Why it's difficult to accurately test the efficiency of a plug-in car

Thu, Feb 5 2015

When it comes to electric vehicles and plug-ins in general, the Environmental Protection Agency-certified range is a hugely important number. While actual range anxiety is largely psychological, the magic number does provide a point of comparison of buyers considering one EV over another. The driving distance is also often touted by automakers when marketing their models. Unfortunately, as Green Car Reports finds in a recent deep dive, the way the EPA calculates the figure is a convoluted mess, and discovering the reasons why is definitely worth the read. The issue isn't about bad science but instead comes down to vague wording. The EPA's accepted range test is sourced from an evaluation called J-1634 from the Society of Automotive Engineers, and it seems to provide balanced results for vehicles that automatically reach a single state of charge when plugged in. However for models with multiple charge settings, the situation gets complicated very quickly. Of course, these modes are often created in the software, meaning that a car's certified driving distance can change with just a few taps of the keyboard without the real world results owners might experience actually changing. By showing the test's effects on the certified range for the Tesla Model S, Nissan Leaf and Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive over the last few years, Green Car Reports makes a compelling argument that it's the evaluation that needs to change. Thankfully, it appears that the solution is a very simple one. Get the details here.

The most or nothing: Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet pushes the luxury limits

Wed, Nov 16 2016

After the introduction of the Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster at the Paris Motor Show this fall, we informed you that Mercedes-Benz has a convertible conundrum, a surplus of drop-tops that seemingly threatens to self-cannibalize within the brand's ever-proliferating lineup. Benz's head of design, Gorden Wagener, who spends much of his time in Southern California, argues it's not a problem: Each convertible, in its ideal construction, would intrinsically vanquish any issues. "The bad is the enemy of the good," he said, not exactly quoting Nietzsche. Now, the three-pointed star brand has upped the top-down ante, with the unveiling this week at the Los Angeles auto show of the Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet, a vehicle so opulent, it sits in price and position atop the uber-luxury brand's current top-of-the-line offering, the $247,900 Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet. View 24 Photos "Mercedes-AMG is our performance brand so it's all about performance stuff," says Wagener in a one-on-one interview on the roof of a Beverly Hills mansion just before the new car is unveiled. "Of course, Maybach has power, too, but it's the ultimate in luxury. So it's more on that side. And for me in the interior, it's the haute couture of the automobile, so we tried to up that a little more with details. And on the exterior, it's a more superb appearance up front, more chrome, more rich, and of course we tried to up that branding even more. The S-Class is the best car in the world, we consider, I always thought we could raise the Mercedes brand. And it's the same with the S convertible." Why does Mercedes-Benz need a flagship atop its flagship? Because, when climbing the mountain of automotive luxury there is always the customer who, when he or she reaches the pinnacle, wants more. A car brand, especially one with deep pockets and luxurious heritage like Mercedes, can always further gild the automotive lilies, creating a step up for those for whom the brand's motto, The Best or Nothing, is a literal life credo. "It's always our job to make it better," Wagener says. "Each little detail, the wood, the wood under cover of the cabriolet, the leathers. All the super luxury details that make a luxury car into a super luxury car. The key is to make a modern luxury design and not a traditional luxury design. There is definitely a market for traditional luxury, but we always wanted to have Mercedes, Maybach in particular, as a modern luxury car.
