1984 Mercedes 500 Sl. Imported 1984 Into The Usa. on 2040-cars
Riverside, California, United States
This is a 1984 500 SL, NOT a 1980. Ebay is still not capable of letting you properly list a non-USA VIN newer than 1980.
All my life I have been connected with Mercedes Benz cars. When I was in college I worked for the factory in Stuttgart-Untertuerkheim. I always loved their cars and I have been collecting them together with brochures and books for many years. Let me give you an overview about the one I have for sale: 1984 500 SL Euro version, imported from Germany with 5k miles to Texas and then to California in 2003 where it received a CARB certification. I bought it from a local MBZ dealer in Orange County, CA in 2012 and am the third owner. 141.700 miles 473 champagne metallic 253 brasil leather 440 cruise control 470 ABS 504 power mirror on right side 532 power antenna without radio 570 center armrest 581 climate control 590 tinted glass all around with rear laminated window 600 headlight washers and wipers 870 heated seat driver side 871 heated seat passenger side Absolutely no rust. Original paint with the exception of the left rear quarter which also has a slight peeling of the clear coat. Leather in excellent shape with one small crack on left seat on outer bolster. (See picture) Dash board has one crack approx. 1 cm long. (See picture) The soft top is like new inside and out with a clear rear window. The hardtop has a couple of minor scratches from putting it down in storage. Last year in November it had a new right side camshaft with rocker arms and a new timing chain installed. The left camshaft is in perfect shape. The engine runs smoothly and quietly with excellent oil pressure and water temperature. The transmission shifts perfectly. The suspension, brakes and steering are in excellent shape. Air conditioner blows ice cold air, power windows and door locks work as designed and even the cruise control works as it should. It had an aftermarket Alpine CD radio when I got the car. I took it out, but will include it together with a period correct Becker stereo. Every light, including dashboard lights work. All instruments are also fully functional. It still has the Euro headlights with upgraded H4 bulbs giving you fantastic lighting at night. The headlight washers and wipers do not work. This car needs nothing and can be driven and enjoyed for a long time to come. I will gladly assist with shipping within the USA or overseas. The car has a 1984 WA YOM (year of manufacture)plate which will never have to be renewed. There is a clear title in my name. It is also smog exempt and therefore I will not provide a CA buyer with a smog certificate. There is no warranty implied or expressed. |

Firing of M-B boss upheld
Mon, 15 Jul 2013Ernst Lieb, the disgraced former CEO of American operations for Mercedes-Benz, will not be getting any more money from the Silver Arrow'd teat. His wrongful dismissal suit against MB's parent company, Daimler, was tossed out of a German appeals panel. This, followed the initial rejection by a lower court last year.
According to court documents acquired by Automotive News, Lieb was found to have "accepted payments of substantial value to which he - as he was aware - had no claim."
Lieb took over American operations from former CEO Paul Halata in September of 2006. Reports surfaced in October of 2011 that Lieb was dismissed from his posting at MB, with a variety of rumors swirling. Eventually, news broke that financial wrong doing was responsible for the German's firing.
A car writer's year in new vehicles [w/video]
Thu, Dec 18 2014Christmas is only a week away. The New Year is just around the corner. As 2014 draws to a close, I'm not the only one taking stock of the year that's we're almost shut of. Depending on who you are or what you do, the end of the year can bring to mind tax bills, school semesters or scheduling dental appointments. For me, for the last eight or nine years, at least a small part of this transitory time is occupied with recalling the cars I've driven over the preceding 12 months. Since I started writing about and reviewing cars in 2006, I've done an uneven job of tracking every vehicle I've been in, each year. Last year I made a resolution to be better about it, and the result is a spreadsheet with model names, dates, notes and some basic facts and figures. Armed with this basic data and a yen for year-end stories, I figured it would be interesting to parse the figures and quantify my year in cars in a way I'd never done before. The results are, well, they're a little bizarre, honestly. And I think they'll affect how I approach this gig in 2015. {C} My tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015 it'll be as high as 73. Let me give you a tiny bit of background about how automotive journalists typically get cars to test. There are basically two pools of vehicles I drive on a regular basis: media fleet vehicles and those available on "first drive" programs. The latter group is pretty self-explanatory. Journalists are gathered in one location (sometimes local, sometimes far-flung) with a new model(s), there's usually a day of driving, then we report back to you with our impressions. Media fleet vehicles are different. These are distributed to publications and individual journalists far and wide, and the test period goes from a few days to a week or more. Whereas first drives almost always result in a piece of review content, fleet loans only sometimes do. Other times they serve to give context about brands, segments, technology and the like, to editors and writers. So, adding up the loans I've had out of the press fleet and things I've driven at events, my tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015, it'll be as high as 73. At one of the buff books like Car and Driver or Motor Trend, reviewers might rotate through five cars a week, or more. I know that number sounds high, but as best I can tell, it's pretty average for the full-time professionals in this business.
