The Iconic Mercedes 560SL Endures!

You've arrived on this page most likely because you are a fan of the Mercedes-Benz 560SL coupe/roadster. We are fans too and have owned and restored over 100 of these attractive, durable, and usable Mercedes roadsters. Simplicity, superb build quality, and an enduring design are all hallmarks of the Mercedes 560SL. The 560SL was the culmination in the United States of what Mercedes-Benz internally referred to as the R107 chassis, a model run that lasted for 18 years, beginning in 1972 with the US introduction of the 350SL.

While European SL buyers had access to a wide array of engine, transmission, and option configurations, Mercedes-Benz decreed that from 1972 forward (until 1990), all SLs destined for North America would carry V-8 engines coupled with automatic transmissions. Reflecting the preferences of the upscale North American SL buyer, US cars were delivered with a high level of equipment and very few options. According to ourSL.com, a comprehensive online SL community, a 1989 560SL offered only three extra cost options: heated front seats ($420), electrically operated orthopedic backrest left side ($85), and electrically operated orthopedic backrest right side ($85).

The 1972 350SL became the iconic 450SL in 1973 and continued with yearly improvements through 1980. The new "S" Class sedans of 1981 carried the new generation light-alloy M116 3.8 liter powerplants and the SL received this silent if moderately underpowered drivetrain as well. Thus in 1981 production began for the silky smooth 380SL. After five years of production, the initially unreliable 380SL gave way to the muscular 560SL in 1986.

Mercedes 560SL Appeal

Clean, aggressive good looks give the 560SL its appeal. Chrome alloy wheels an aftermarket add-on.

In the 560SL, Mercedes got it all just right, offering essentially bullet-proof reliability, satisfying power, and aggressive good looks. The 560SL combined all that Mercedes learned about the V-8 R107 chassis cars into a cultural icon that quietly and confidently told the world its occupants had "arrived."

Standard equipment included driver's side airbag and ABS brakes. Interior improvements for the 560SL included lovely burlwood accents, improved lateral seatback support, and a power passenger side mirror. The steering wheel, however, was still fixed and seat adjustments were still carried out manually.

Now over 20 years old, this car is attracting new buyers due to its iconic good looks, simplicity, and vault-like build quality. Total production from 1986 through 1989 came to 37,218 units and prices rose a whopping $16,000 from 1986's $48,200 to $64,230 in 1989.

Time, however, has not been kind to many examples and savvy buyers do their homework before venturing out to buy their dream 560SL. New details emerge on forthcoming Mercedes-Benz SLC

Sat, 02 Feb 2013

Last we heard, the Mercedes-Benz SLC had been put on indefinite hold, but now Car Magazine is reporting that the Porsche 911-fighting "Baby SLS" coupe could be on sale by 2015. Riding on a modified SLS AMG chassis, the smaller and lighter SLC could be priced in the sub-$100,000 price bracket.
We'd already heard that the new car would feature conventional doors (instead of SLS-like gullwing doors), but this report focuses on some of the possible powertrains Mercedes-Benz is likely to use. At launch, the SLC could offer a pair of V8-powered models - a 485-horsepower SLC and a 585-hp SLC S - both being powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. About a year after launch, a new V6 model could emerge giving the SLC an estimated 333 horsepower and its lowest price point.
It also sounds like the car's name hasn't been completely finalized as some people within Mercedes are favoring a return of the SLR name.

Clark Gable's 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing doesn't sell, then does sell for $1.85 million [UPDATE: w/video]

Sat, 19 Jan 2013

How much extra value does previous celebrity ownership add to of a car? Really, there's no way to know until the car in question hits the auction block and bidders start raising their hands. In the case of the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing you see above, the celebrity owner is none other than Clark Gable, who purchased it new. After Gable's death in 1960, the car changed hands a few times before settling with Charles Wood in 1975.
A high-dollar restoration was performed in 1989, and period accessories added by Gable himself were kept in place, including the Rudge knock-off wheels and Nardi steering wheel. Any Mercedes-Benz 300SL is worth a big chunk of money. In the case of Clark Gable's old Gullwing, the bidding stalled at $1.9 million here at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale. As one of the 5000-series cars, this 300SL carried a reserve, and a bit of after-the-fact dealmaking saw the car change hands for $1.85 million.

Mercedes working on new inline-six engines

Mon, 11 Nov 2013

Mercedes-Benz will make a return to the inline-six-cylinder engine game, according to a report from the UK's AutoCar. It's not clear what's prompting the phasing out of the current array of V6s.
We'll see the first inline-six from Mercedes in next-generation E-Class, set to debut in 2016. Following that, it'll arrive as part of a mid-cycle refresh for the C-Class in 2017. What's particularly special about the new inline-six is its modular nature, which will allow Mercedes to eventually spinoff three- and four-cylinder options, with the three-pot arriving alongside the new inline-six.
In other news, AutoCar uncovered some details on the next C-Class AMG, which will ditch its excellent 6.2-liter, AMG V8 in favor of a 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8, although we've already told you about that. What we didn't know at the time, though, was that the 4.0-liter would be paired first with a new, seven-speed AMG Speedshift transmission and offer all-wheel drive. AC also reports that a nine-speed Speedshift is in the works.
