This is the nicest all-original Mercedes 560SEL you’ll ever see on ebay. And I am not kidding; I have bought, driven, and sold over 170 W126 chassis Mercedes cars in the last 10 years, more than anyone in the USA including Mercedes dealers. This 1987 50K mile 560SEL is ridiculously nice. It’s a one-owner car since new, has a great service history, is fully serviced and prepped for its new owner, and has NEVER been in an accident and has all its original body panels and factory 040 black paint. All the little things you look for in a mint W126 are here; the unfaded orange instrument cluster markings, the firm driver’s seat bolsters/padding, VIN# stickers on every body panel, dry spare tire/wheelwells, and much much more. Please read on to find out more.

-- Here she is in all her glory --

Yes, this car is expensive. Yes, you can find a less expensive one, or I can find you a less expensive one if you’d like! Yes, the market does not fully appreciate these kings of the autobahn. But I will tell you this; if you want the best, a W126 that drives like a proper W126, that feels like a new car and also LOOKS like a new car, that is unmolested, unmodified, has ZERO weak areas, and will not need $4K invested in it in the first 12 months you own it, this is the car for you. I will do everything needed to make sure this car is 100% for the winning bidder, and I can provide literally hundreds of references from buyers that will tell you I do what I say, and deliver what I promise.

Here's the deal:

-- This is a 1987 560SEL in 040 black over black leather and matching black carpets, door panels, dash, and footrests. It has 50,xxx original miles, is a one-owner car since new, looks simply amazing, and no rust or rot anywhere. The trunk and rear window seal are BONE DRY. This car was loved, and it shows. --

-- This car is the rarest of them all; not only a one-owner car with a clean carfax, but a car on which EVERYTHING is original…the paint, body panels, bumpers, seats, leather, wood, glass and more is all original the way it came from the factory, and all like new. --

-- Exterior 9.75 out of 10 (I'm finicky) – Excellent overall condition all-original paint, body, glass, and trim. No dings. No dents. This 560SEL looks amazing, with a deep shine to the 040 black paint that's like looking into an endless mirror. This car looks great even under fluorescent light in a garage. Imagine getting a 27 year old black car with no swirl marks or spiderwebs in the paint….amazing! --

-- The lower side-body moldings are in great shape. Rubber, glass, and trim is all nice. --

-- Look at the body panels.....they are laser straight. --

-- The tires are a little worn and noisy. But I will a good matching set of correct Michelin tires at the BIN price with over 70% tread remaining. The factory wheels are excellent and look great. --

-- Interior 9.8 out of 10 – Seats, carpets, headliner are all in astounding amazing original condition. The back seat looks like no one ever sat in it! No saggy seatbase cushions or worn out faded leather. The door panels, dash, and center console are all fantastic. --

-- Here is more good stuff. If you know these cars, you know at this age if not in absolute collector-quality condition, the orange instrument cluster markings are faded to yellow, the car idles too high and shakes at low idle, the headliner is stained, there is moisture in the spare tire well, the door jambs are rough and faded, the headlight bezels are cracked/cloudy, the leather around the seat belts on the B-pillar is torn and pulling away, etc etc. NONE of those issues are present with this car. The condition of these items, and all the other items like them, is astounding AND original. You will not find a better condition 560SEL anywhere. --

-- The door panels, headliner, and wood trim are also in great shape, like the rest of the car. --

-- Even the trunk and spare are mint, and the tool roll is in place as is the first-aid kit. The spare tire and both wheel wells are BONE DRY. The spare and tools are new and unused! --

-- Electrical 10 out of 10 – All seats, windows, vacuum lock system, lights, radio, sunroof, wipers, defogger, mirror, and other items work properly. The HVAC system is fast to respond, and operates perfectly with scalding hot heat and ice-cold A/C. This system blows harder out of the rear console vent than most W126’s do out of their front center dash vents! --

-- Mechanical 10 out of 10 - Engine starts, idles, runs, and revs to redline in every gear smooth and STRONG. This 560SEL absolutely flies, and feels more like a catapult than a car, especially at high speeds. Transmission is smooth yet very aggressive, and downshifts eagerly. No abrupt engagement, just fast, firm, progressive shifts. This Mercedes runs at high speed with no vibrations or noises. There are no leaks....NONE. --

-- This 560SEL has passed THREE inspections with flying colors. A pre-purchase overall inspection, a suspension/brake/wheel/tire/exhaust inspection, and a shop near me has gone over it as well. After a thorough inspection for any leaks or problems, none were found. --

-- Engine is strong and VERY eager to run, transmission smooth and ready to drop down two gears at your command to rocket you past slower traffic. Brakes are solid and pedal feel is firm. Suspension is tight like new, no worn tie rod ends, ball joints, shocks, or anything else. Steering nicely weighted with no play in the box. ZERO leaks or noises. Rear SLS is operating properly. This car drives and handles like new. --

-- I have brought this car’s maintenance and service up to date with a new water pump, distributor cap/rotor/wires/spark plugs/air filter, HVAC vacuum lines, A/C conversion to R134a, new power antenna, fresh oil and filter, new rear brakes, and more. Over $2000 spent to make sure this car runs properly! This 560SEL comes with all the books including dealer maintenance stamps, tools, first-aid kit, and service records. This car was LOVED. --

-- This 560SEL does not have any rear window leaks common to W126 cars, no rubber rot, no leaks, no lukewarm A/C....NOTHING. Everything is in fantastic shape, and at 50K miles, it’s not even close to broken in! If you’ve been waiting for that time-capsule car, it has arrived. --

-- If someone selects the buy-it-now option, I will provide a full $200 detailing, MB OEM carpeted floor mats, a new power antenna, and the correct Michelin tires mentioned above. --

-- Nits: While the exterior looks fantastic, and even the bumpers are unmarked, the car does have a few light scratches and a few small touch-up marks from use over the years. There are no other significant cosmetic or mechanical problems whatsoever, and if you know the W126 chassis cars, you know it’s amazing to find one in this overall condition. --

-- I have good feedback, and sold many Audis, Acuras, and W126 Benzes that the new owners are thrilled with. They and others have offered to act as references to verify that I am honest in my descriptions of the cars I sell, and you are welcome to contact them. --

2016 Italian Grand Prix race recap

Mon, Sep 5 2016

The Italian Grand Prix at Monza is called the Temple of Power. Furthermore, the winning driver in Italy started on pole in 13 of the last 16 years, and only one driver in that time has won the Italian GP from behind the front row of the grid: Rubens Barrichello in 2002 and 2009. By this point in the current Formula 1 season (era?) we know what it means when a track emphasizes both power and pole position: Mercedes-AMG Petronas. The Silver Arrows locked out the front row with Lewis Hamilton on pole. A poor start prevented the Briton from capitalizing on the advantage, so teammate Nico Rosberg and four other drivers swept by him before the end of the second turn. Mercedes would later say a clutch issue caused Hamilton's botched start, but that didn't help the man who'd just fallen to sixth place. Rosberg got about two laps of television coverage on his way to an unbothered victory ahead of Hamilton. Ferrari made Hamilton's second-place finish easier by sticking to a two-stop strategy; both Mercedes drivers pitted once. We aren't sure why Ferrari didn't at least attempt a one-stopper once Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen had been gifted second and third on track. A pit stop took about 23 seconds from entry to exit and Vettel finished third, six seconds behind Hamilton. Raikkonen finished fourth, another seven seconds behind Vettel. Perhaps the Scuderia's tire usage wouldn't allow longer stints, but we'll never know. Daniel Ricciardo wielded his Red Bull like a scalpel to make an impeccable pass on Valtteri Bottas in the Williams and take fifth place. Ricciardo, trailing another Italian province behind, somehow closed the gap on Bottas in just the braking zone of Turn 1, pulling alongside near the apex without locking a wheel on entry nor running wide on exit. Bottas claimed sixth ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez in the Force India, Felipe Massa in the second Williams, and Nico Hulkenberg in the second Force India sealing the top ten. Monza did spring a few on-track surprises. Esteban Gutierrez drove Haas F1 into Q3 for the first time this season, the Mexican setting the sixth-best time in Q2. Manor Racing planned for Monza all season, Pascal Wehrlein repaying the effort by qualifying 13th. Fernando Alonso pitted his McLaren on Lap 50 of the 53-lap race for a set of super soft Pirellis, then set the fastest lap. It's Honda's first fastest lap since 1992. The biggest moments happened off the track.

The 2016 Spanish Grand Prix flipped all the scripts

Mon, May 16 2016

The Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit and the Hungaroring fly the flag for processional races, yet Spain's Circuit de Catalunya is arguably as bad. Before this weekend, the pole-sitter won the race 19 times out of the last 25 years. The front row of the grid produced 23 winners in the past 25 years. The racing gods edited that script this year, when a first-lap crash and two mid-race strategy changes kept things open until the end of the 66-lap race. It started when Mercedes-AMG Petronas teammates Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton took each other out on Lap 1. After Rosberg passed pole-sitter Hamilton into Turn 1, Rosberg's car slowed through Turn 3, somehow in the wrong mode. Hamilton closed in on Rosberg so quickly that once the Brit ducked inside for the pass, he couldn't back out. Rosberg, however, closed the door so suddenly that Hamilton had no choice but to drive onto the grass. When Hamilton spun, he collected Rosberg and both Mercedes' ended up in the gravel trap. The stewards deemed it a racing incident. The crash put Red Bull teammates Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen in the lead, followed by Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz and the Ferrari duo of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen. Both Ferraris cleared Sainz by Lap 10, leaving 56 laps for them to haul in the Red Bulls. Ferrari loosely followed Red Bull's pit strategies. Ricciardo pitted on Laps 11 and 28, Vettel pitted on Laps 15 and 37. Verstappen pitted on Laps 12 and 35, Raikkonen pitted on Laps 13 and 36. Pirelli predicted a three-stop race as the fastest and that the medium tire could only go about 23 laps. Verstappen and Raikkonen didn't get those memos. So while Ricciardo and Vettel came in for third stops the Dutchman and the Finn stayed out, with Verstappen ahead of Raikkonen at the front of the race as of Lap 43. That's when Verstappen – 18 years and 227 days old – proved how good a driver he is, lapping perfectly as second-place Raikkonen closed the gap to a little more than half a second. The Finn still couldn't get past the Dutchman down the pit straight even with the help of DRS, nor under braking at the only real passing opportunity into Turn 1. At the end of Lap 66 Verstappen crossed the line ahead of Raikkonen, a victorious end to Verstappen's first race weekend after being promoted to Red Bull. Further back, Vettel and Ricciardo fought for scraps, the German staying ahead to finish third.

Daimler could sell off Li-Tec's EV battery business

Sat, May 24 2014

Five-plus years may have been about enough time for Daimler AG to know whether it wanted to be in the battery-pack production business. The Mercedes-Benz parent may stop making electric-vehicle batteries and ultimately sell its Li-Tec battery-cell factory in Germany within two years, according to Bloomberg News which cites Manager Magazin. The beneficiary may be LG Electronics, which would likely take over battery-production duties for models such as Daimler's Smart ED battery-electric vehicle. Daimler is taking a number of steps to improve profit margins, which are thinner than those of its German rivals like BMW. Like its German competition, the company has lagged behind companies such as Nissan, Renault and Tesla Motors in terms of aggressively pursuing growth via plug-in vehicle sales. Daimler spokesman Hendrik Sackmann, in an e-mail to AutoblogGreen, would only say that the battery business is growing "rapidly" and that Li-Tec is developing "according to our plans." "Regarding Li-Tec, we are working on a concept for the future line-up," he added. "The battery cells for the successor of the Smart electric drive won't be provided by Li-Tec." Daimler in 2008 launched Li-Tec as a joint venture with Evonik, though Daimler recently put plans together to buy out Evonik's 50-percent share of Li-Tec, Bloomberg reported last month. Evonik's role was manufacturing electrodes and separators for batteries. Daimler also said last fall that it was looking to cooperate more extensively with Tesla in regards to electric vehicle development. The two companies first said they'd work together in 2009.
