Here is a opportunity for a Mercedes-Benz lover to purchase a very nice specimen of the Porsche built 500E. This car has been proudly owned by only two people and has has the best of service and has been for the last 10 years always stored in a climate controlled garage. The car has spent its life in Southern California and Texas. I'm fairly sure that the first owner also kept it well. After 10 years of ownership I have decided to auction her at the upcoming Mecum Houston. The car will be auctioned on Friday morning April 5th Lot F20.  Please check the Mecum site for information. The car has a very low reserve and will sell. Mecum has my signed title in hand and I am listing it here in hopes that a fellow enthusiast looking for a nice 500E might check out this car as there are not very many 500E's left in this condition.

I purchased this 1992 Mercedes 500E car from William Shatner of Los Angeles in 2003. Mr. Shatner purchased the car new in 1992 and he personally owned it until the time I bought it. At the time of my purchase it had 66,000 miles and was in very good condition. Mr Shatner was kind enough to sign the underside of the front arm rest and took a final picture of himself with the car in front of his L.A. home. Me being both a Porsche nut and a car nut had always wanted to own one of these incredible machines and bought the best example I could find at the time. My intent was to keep the car for as long as I was able to drive and spared no expense to maintain and repair anything that needed repair. I have always insisted that only oem Mercedes parts be used for repairs, for example even the battery in the trunk is the correct oem Mercedes one. Recent repairs of late, performed by Park Place Mercedes of Dallas, include a transmission rebuild and new ARS/ABS pump. The brake rotors, pads, and Michelin tires are near new. The wheels are oem Mercedes Evo II 17" that were used on the 500E limited models. The car functions very well and is a beast, uses no oil, has no leaks, all electric items work, the wood has no cracks, the leather interior with the exception of light wear on the driver's seat looks new.

I have a two inch binder for examination of all the repairs on the car including what I believe are all or most all of the records from Mr. Shatner. Three years ago I had the car repainted and had all of the trim and rubber bits replaced. I repainted the car as it has some dings and scratches and there was talk of the EPA banning solvent car paints such as the original Glasurit product that was used. The paint used is exactly the same paint originally used. This work was performed by Stewart's Body Shop of Dallas and to this day the car looks like it did when it rolled out the factory in 1992. I added Hella euro headlamps that are film protected. These model correct headlamps use a leaded glass lens and the lighting power at night is just amazing.

I could go on and on but I think you get the idea of the caliber of this car. I'm hoping that she will end up in good hands and I know she will is going to make someone a very happy person for years to come!

Gullwing America turns SLS AMG Roadster into stunning 1955 300 SC redux

Thu, 14 Feb 2013

Gullwing America specializes in what it calls "retro styling meets modern technology." It's next demonstration of that is the convertible above, a stylized recreation of the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SC (inset) supported by the structure of a 2012 SLS AMG Roadster. Commissioned by a client in Eastern Europe, the resulting car is called the 300 SLC.
The hand-formed aluminum bodywork required just a few changes to the SLS AMG Roadster, namely reworking the headlights into a stacked arrangement of LEDs and relocating the pop-up spoiler behind the cabin. The retro grille and long, straight hood evoke the past, the custom exhaust, height-adjustable suspension, 21-inch wheels up front and 22-inch wheels in back, however, stray a little further from history. The 300 SLC will come with a hardtop and be one-of-a-kind, making it even rarer than its inspiration, of which 92 were made.
If you have any more questions, they can probably be answered in the high-res photo gallery above and press release below.

Infiniti went out of its way to make the QX30 not a Mercedes

Thu, Mar 16 2017

You can complain all you want about perceived badge engineering when a company (like Mercedes-Benz) sells a platform to another brand (such as Infiniti). The reality is that most buyers won't know the difference, and they won't even realize their Infiniti is really a Mercedes underneath or that their neighbor's GLA has the same basic parts as the QX30 they just bought. What's weird to me isn't that sameness, but the places where the two cute little utes differ. These two vehicles, which are more like tall hatchbacks, use the same Mercedes 2.0-liter turbo four and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Infiniti adds its own throttle and transmission calibrations. The suspension design is the same, although there are tuning differences. Both come standard with front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive an option. Fuel economy matches for the FWD models, while the AWD Infiniti lags behind the Mercedes for some reason. So they're very similar despite their different looks. And design makes sense as a point of differentiation. Frankly, they go further than a lot of vehicles on shared platforms do – further, in fact, than the upcoming Nissan Navara-based Mercedes X-Class pickup does. The QX30 has its own sheetmetal and glass to separate it from the GLA-class. You probably think one looks better than the other. If you know where to look, the signs of sameness are obvious. Most major systems and pieces are shared, like the steering wheels (with different center covers), most switchgear, and things like interior and exterior door handles. Shared parts are fine as long as the parts are good ones. On that note, how many Tesla buyers realize their steering column and stalks, plus the window switches, come from Mercedes? And does that actually matter? We'd argue no. About those differences. Many are functional, like the fact the Infiniti does not carry over the Benz's Brake Hold feature – when you roll to a stop in the GLA (or any other Benz), pressing the brake pedal firmly applies the electric parking brake until you hit the gas to move again. The QX30 has an electric parking brake, but no Brake Hold feature. Someone used to driving Mercedes models will look a bit silly standing on the brake pedal to no effect. Ask us how we know. The Mercedes gauge package is carried over, but with the Infiniti font. Makes sense, although it's off-putting at first if you've seen the original, prompting a weird deja vu. Circular dash vents are replaced by rhomboid ones.

AMG-powered Aston Martins still years away

Mon, 16 Sep 2013

After flirting for several years, Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin have finally tied the knot. Just don't expect to see any offspring to result from the union for at least three or four years.
This according to Auto Express, which spoke with Daimler chief Dr. Dieter Zetsche at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week. AE reports that a new range of AMG-developed turbocharged V8s, transmissions and electrical components will make their way into the successors to the current V8 Vantage and DB9, but that these models are still a few years off.
Purists might balk at the thought of a Mercedes-powered Aston holding true to the brand's heritage. But while David Brown (for whom the DB range is named) may have steered clear of shoehorning in Detroit muscle into his cars, the entirety of the company's current range is powered by engines borrowing technology from Ford, and that arrangement seems to have worked well for Aston until now. And if you're still skeptical, look no further than Pagani and its AMG-sourced engines and you should have all the proof you need that the new relationship between Daimler and Aston could be a success.
