A Magnificent Two Owner Example with just over 73,000 Miles from New

Fully Sorted and Ready for a New Home - Please Wait for all Photos to Load

Finished in its original Arctic White over Navy Blue leather interior, this remarkable last-year W126 chassis Mercedes-Benz 420SEL is a one-owner car that spent all but the last few months in and around Charleston, West Virginia. Per the original window sticker (seen below), the car was originally shipped by Mercedes-Benz to Sanderson of Charlottesville, VA from where it then made its way to Astorg Mercedes-Benz of Parkersburg to be delivered to a couple in Chapmanville, WV. Based on records with the car and the Carfax report I've looked at, during their 18 years of stewardship, this couple whose name appears in the owners manual as well as the second owner who followed for a few short years evidently all took excellent care of this car and drove it less than 4,000 miles per year on average thereafter.

We can find no evidence of a repaint on any panel of this car - even the original hand-painted pinstripe noted on the window sticker remains down each beltline. The bumpers and side cladding are unmarked and likewise original as is all the glass and other chrome and anodized trim. Of note, we did replace the headlamp surrounds which double as the fog lamp surrounds as they had discolored, as well as the headlamp wiper blades on both sides which were dried out.

To restore the ride and handling of this exceptional Mercedes-Benz, all four tires were just replaced with new Good Year Assurance Touring radials which are the most similar tire to the original Michelins (such as the spare in the trunk which has never been on the ground, seen below), both upper ball joints and control arms were replaced as were many other slightly-worn parts in the front end. Around the back of the car, the entire rear subframe came down and got new springs and shim pads to restore the correct height all the way around the car. The wheels and tires were road force balanced and the car received a precision four-wheel alignment. As a result, it drives phenomenally at any speed. We also took the time to fully inspect the rest of the brakes, suspension and undercarriage and found everything to be in great shape.

A close-up of the right front wheel and tire.

We then cleaned, clay-barred, buffed and polished the finish to remove all environmental contaminants and some light rain staining to the original Mercedes finish. This car has an unbelievable shine as a result and is very well protected. Of note, we were again very careful to protect the original pinstripe.

Look at that shine and reflection!

We left no stone unturned detailing this car as close to perfection as possible. The results speak for themselves.

Likewise down this side, the car is incredibly straight and sound; there's no evidence of any bodywork, paintwork or rust anywhere.

We thought we'd show a couple photos of the car up front with the lights off.

Now, let's take a look around inside the car.

Unlike almost every one of these cars with a blue interior at this stage of the game, the dashboard, console, seats and door panels are without cracks or any deformities as you see here and below. Likewise, the wood on the dash, center console and doors has nearly all its original lustre. More to the point, everything works among all the fantastic standard features on this S-Class, the cruise control, lights, ...

... climate control, 8-speaker Becker 1432 Stereo, windows, locks, mirrors and more.

Up top, the ASR winter mode button stands out - a nearly $2,000 option and only available on 1991 models, so a very rare thing to find on a W126. Note the display on the Becker and, for that matter, the unused cigarette lighter - there's no evidence that this car was ever smoked in, clearly.

Note the excellent idle oil pressure at temperature, we're almost warmed up in this photo. The caution light above "miles" on the speedometer lights up when you've engaged the ABS or ASR as it should.

Undyed and untouched, the driver's seat is immaculate, supple yet supportive.

Likewise on the passenger's side.

The rear seat may never have been sat in, for it is just pristine.

Just look at that rear legroom! The front seats are almost all the way back in this photo. Amazing comfort here.

More of the same here.

Once again, spacious, original and immaculate.

In its place in the parcel shelf, the original Mercedes-Benz supplied first aid kit.

All four doors have giant woofers as part of the premium Becker audio system found in the S class Mercedes of this generation. Driver and passenger have 8-way power seats with dual memory as well - on both sides!

Rear passengers got lovely wood, leather and of course window controls on the 420SEL.

More of the same originality and quality here.

The owner's manual in its pouch in the passenger's door pocket.

All of this car's original books and documentation, the service book is filled out and still has the build data card...

The data card with all options noted.

The wallet with books, all three keys (two master, one valet) and the original window sticker.

Amazing, $66,999 in 1991!

Unlike the smaller Mercedes of this era, the S-class was trimmed out in upholstery color and grade carpet. Pardon the flash glare.

Beneath the carpet, the cover over the spare wheel and tire.

In here, the original spare, jack with the original tag on it and the tool kit that's never been removed from its protective bag.

Under the hood, we find the tidy 4.2 litre V-8 engine and all accessories just how and where they should be. The car was dealer serviced up to the last major service and has a way to go before needing another.

Even the brake fluid appears to have been changed recently. The air conditioning blows very cold in warm weather and has already been converted to R134a.

Mercedes moves R-Class production to AM General in Indiana

Tue, Jan 27 2015

Go back a decade or two and you'd have seen the SUV market polarizing in opposite directions: hard-core off-roaders like the Hummer on the one hand, and passenger-focused crossovers like the Mercedes R-Class on the other. Now their fates are set to intertwine, at least as far as manufacturing is concerned. No longer producing Hummers, AM General (which designed and originally produced the Hummer) has been assigned the task of manufacturing the R-Class at its underused, 675,000 square-foot Commercial Assembly Plant in Mishawaka, IN – part of metropolitan South Bend. The decision was undertaken to allow Mercedes to free up production capacity at its plant in Tuscaloosa, AL, where it also produces the M-Class, GL-Class and C-Class, and where it will soon begin manufacturing the GLE Coupe. The vacation of the R-Class assembly line could be earmarked to make room for that new slant-roofed crossover (which was originally thought to be joining the Tuscaloosa plant as a fifth model) or could pave the way for another model to reach Alabama altogether. The multi-year arrangement to manufacture the R-Class makes AM General the first manufacturer contracted to build Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the US, but hardly the only one in the world. The G-Class – which could, incidentally, be characterized as the German equivalent of the Hummer – is built on Mercedes' behalf by Magna Steyr in Austria, and the company builds many of its passenger and commercial vehicles for local consumption under joint ventures in the Far East especially. The R-Class was first introduced in 2005, and though it's still built in America, it was removed from the company's US lineup back in 2012. However Mercedes confirms that, since 2013, it has been and remains available exclusively in China. That puts the R-Class in the rare position of being manufactured in the United States by (or now for) a foreign automaker but unavailable for sale here. AM General Selected As Mercedes-Benz First and Only Contract Manufacturer of Vehicles in the United States SOUTH BEND, Ind., Jan. 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- AM General LLC and Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc., today announced that Mercedes-Benz has selected AM General to manufacture the Mercedes-Benz R-Class luxury vehicle at AM General's world-class 675,000 square-foot Commercial Assembly Plant.

2016 Mercedes-Benz C350 Plug-In Hybrid on sale this fall

Mon, Jan 12 2015

The Mercedes-Benz C350 Plug-In Hybrid can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than six seconds and can travel 20 miles in all-electric range. As for the more practical issues related to the new PHEV, well, those details will have to wait a bit longer. The C350 Plug-In Hybrid makes its official debut at the Detroit Auto Show this week. The electrified Mercedes will start US sales this fall as a 2016 model. The sedan's four-cylinder, 1.9-liter, turbocharged gasoline engine will be paired with an electric motor that will deliver a combined 275 horsepower. The car will also have such goodies as regenerative braking and collision-avoidance systems, not to mention a top speed of 130 mph. We're still waiting for the car's estimated fuel economy, of course. Not to mention its sticker price. Spy shots of the C-Class PHEV started popping up in May, as well as reports that the Daimler division was testing prototypes in Germany. Meanwhile, this past summer, Mercedes-Benz started taking payments for the S500 Plug-In Hybrid, the German automaker's first production plug-in vehicle. That model, which started European deliveries last September, can zip from 0 to 60 in about five seconds. It also costs about $146,000.

These are the 'Greenest' and 'Meanest' cars in 2015

Fri, Feb 6 2015

As has become tradition, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has come up with a ranking of what it refers to as the "greenest" cars of 2015, and, by way of contrast, a list of the so-called "meanest" cars, so those who value eco-friendliness over all else can choose which vehicles they should or should not consider buying. As you may expect, electric cars make up the majority of the greenest cars on the list, but, perhaps surprisingly to many, the Tesla Model S didn't make the cut. It's worth noting, too, that where the electricity an owner uses to charge their electric vehicle has a big impact on its overall environmental impact. "A car that is charged using electricity generated from natural gas or renewables is going to have significantly less impact on the environment than one charged on a coal-heavy grid," says ACEEE lead vehicle analyst Shruti Vaidyanathan. The ACEEE's list for 2015 looks very different than it did in 2014. It's an interesting collection, though – and we're sure this goes without saying, really – we'd recommend doing a bit more research into each vehicle and how it might fit into your daily life before making any purchase decisions.
