Up for sale is my all-original, two-owner, 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 that I affectionately named “The 7 Litre.” It is a virtually rust-free Southern car that has lived its entire life in Memphis, TN. It is a complete car but is not running at this time.

I am the second owner – having purchased the 7 Litre on February 21, 1988 (see picture of sales document). I have cropped out my name and address for privacy of course, but the new owner will receive the untouched copy along with the title.  The new owner will be pleasantly surprised when they see that the car, title, owner, and address all match to this day – dating back to 1988.

The previous owner was Mr. Robertson who owned the first Mercedes-Benz dealership in Memphis – Robertson Motors at 2950 Airways Blvd. Mr. Robertson had a tendency to get new cars frequently (as dealers do), but this 6.9 was just too much fun to pass on. So he ended up keeping it in his collection for 10 years before selling it to a competing used Mercedes dealership in town – Benz Bavaria, Ltd. At 3466 Park Avenue. That is where I purchased the car for $16,700 less my trade-in.

The car was in remarkable condition when I purchased it for my wife. Finished in grey blue metallic paint with parchment leather and burl walnut trim, it was quite a beautiful car. Having an engineering background, I was impressed with the sophistication of the 6.9 Mercedes as well. The M-100 engine, with its dry sump lubrication and hydraulic valve gear actuation, truly was a marvel. The hydro pneumatic oil/nitrogen struts and self-leveling rear suspension was quite novel as well.  Even though the car was 10 years old when we took possession of it, it was still cutting edge. Even the newer body style 560SEL at the time could not keep up with this car.

For 10 years, we had a ball with the 7 Litre – including the time in Alabama when I took her up to 135 mph with still more room in the pedal (I backed off though questioning the last time the tires were replaced). It was so effortlessly fast, and unbelievably well mannered over bumps and in corners. We took care of it, and it took care of us.

Sadly, the car got away from me after my wife passed away in February of 1998. With 4 cars in my driveway, it was difficult to keep everything going. The last time I drove this car, in 2001, it was in tip-top condition inside and out. When I went to start it a few weeks later, it did not want to fire up. When I circled back to it a few weeks later, the battery was dead. From there, it sat until about 6 years ago when I charged up the battery and tried it again with the help of a Mercedes mechanic who at that time made house calls. We were able to get it to run by pouring gas into the intake, but that was it. I was not really interested in throwing any more money into the car, so I chose to let it sit.

With the help of a family friend who is a car guru, I recently tried to get the 7 Litre running again. Unfortunately, we determined that the engine is now locked up (quite surprisingly in my opinion). We pulled the belts and cooling blade off to access the crankshaft bolt. Despite a generous soaking of WD40, PB Blaster, and Marvel Mystery Oil in the spark plug holes we were unable to make the crank turn. Granted, we were a bit timid – not wanting to break the bolt. So perhaps the right mechanic with the appropriate knowledge and tools will have better luck.

The Bad News Is:

Besides the non-running engine, you can see that the car is in need of cosmetic attention. There is surface rust on the hood and gas filler cap. The paint is oxidized. The interior (seats, headliner, carpeting, and wood) has been badly damaged by stopped up/leaking sunroof drains.

The Good News Is:

The car is complete and missing absolutely nothing. From the original spare Michelin XWX tire specially made for the 6.9 Mercedes and untouched Bundt wheel, to the perfect glass all around, to the rust free chrome, to the straight as an arrow bodywork that has never been in an accident. The car has a transmission in it that was replaced by AAMCO Transmissions less than 100 miles ago – to the tune of over $3,000. I had brand new brake rotors and pads replaced all-around less than 500 miles ago. The car has a brand new water pump in it – which was extremely expensive for the part and labor. Luckily, I had the sense to place cinder blocks under the car, so it has remained in the up position all this time. Given that the suspension system was working properly before I stopped driving it, hopefully it will work fine once the car runs again.

Please understand that parting with this car will be like parting with a family member – a well regarded one. I have owned The 7 Litre for nearly 27 years after all. I understand the condition is wanting and repair costs are not cheap. However, I have a lot invested in this car, a lot of memories, and I truly hope that a Mercedes mechanic or collector will find a way to pump new life into it.

Thank you for looking, I am happy to answer any questions you e-mail me, and I look forward to passing the torch to a new owner soon.

2015 Monaco F1 Grand Prix race recap [spoilers]

Mon, May 25 2015

Lewis Hamilton came to Monaco with a new three-year deal with Mercedes-AMG Petronas and a vow to not let anything, including any "mistakes" by teammate Nico Rosberg, stand in the way of his best qualifying effort. Mercedes reportedly made it rain with a 100-million-pound deal, and Hamilton made it rain right back with his first pole position at Monaco. Rosberg did make a mistake but this time it was behind Hamilton, which meant he stuffed-up the qualifying attempts of rival drivers like Sebastian Vettel. So Rosberg starts second, 0.342 behind Hamilton but 0.449 ahead of Vettel in the Ferrari. Daniel Ricciardo thinks he should have been third, but a communication error with his engineers left him in the wrong engine setting for his final hot lap, so by the very first corner he'd lost the time he would have needed to get higher than fourth on the grid. The second Infiniti Red Bull Racing of Daniil Kvyat slots in behind him, ahead of the second Ferrari of Kimi "Not A Very Happy Day" Raikkonen, who just can't get it going lately. Sergio Perez did for the Sahara Force India what the car can't do on its own, which is grab a top-ten qualifying spot. Toro Rosso rookie Carlos Sainz had qualified eighth but missed a call to the weigh bridge, so he's been slapped into the pit lane. Pastor Maldonado in the Lotus inherits his eighth place, ahead of rookie Max Verstappen in the second Toro Rosso, and Jenson Button in the McLaren. Button only got up there because of two penalties: for Sainz, and Romain Grosjean who had qualified 11th but took a penalty for a gearbox change. Want to know how hard it is to do better on race day than in qualifying at Monaco? Even the never-say-die Fernando Alonso said, "Monte Carlo is a train of cars on Sunday, the race finishes on Saturday afternoon." Well obviously, he didn't take Max Verstappen's seek-and-destroy tactics into account. The young Dutchman had made passing look like a real option in Monaco, getting past Maldonado at St. Devote on Lap 7 after a bit of argy-bargy on Lap 6, then taking advantage of blue flags to slink past teammate Carlos Sainz and Williams driver Valtteri Bottas while hiding in Sebastian Vettel's slipstream. He tried the same move on Romain Grosjean on Lap 65, but Grosjean locked him out. Verstappen lined up the Lotus driver over the following laps, then looked like he slipped to the inside at St.

Race Recap: 2016 Austrian GP is mishaps from start to finish

Tue, Jul 5 2016

At the 2015 US Formula 1 Grand Prix, rain mixed up the grid and a first-lap incident cast the die for the race. The Austin, Texas event made highlight reels for those reasons and because it decided the Driver's Championship. At the 2016 Austrian F1 Grand Prix, rain mixed up the grid and a last-lap incident cast the die for the race. The Spielbergring race will feature in this year's highlight reel because it might force Mercedes-AMG Petronas to make some hard decisions about the rest of the season. For the first time this season, Lewis Hamilton converted pole position into a lead through Turn 1, and began slowly pulling away from the field. Teammate Nico Rosberg started from sixth because of a gearbox penalty, but was up to third when he pitted on Lap 11. Mercedes normally pits the lead driver first, in this case being Hamilton, but Mercedes wanted to get Rosberg ahead of the two Ferraris. Hamilton pitted on Lap 22, emerging behind Rosberg because of a slow stop. Sebastian Vettel led the race for Ferrari on Lap 27 when his right rear tire exploded coming down the start-finish straight – an eerie reminder of the 2015 Belgian Grand Prix. The Safety Car rolled out, yet when racing resumed Rosberg stayed ahead. After the two Mercs came in for second stops everyone expected Hamilton to lead, but Hamilton had messed up his in-lap and lost a cumulative 3.3 seconds during his actual stops compared to Rosberg's pit-stop times. The Brit remained second. Hamilton chased his teammate for the final 15 laps. At the beginning of the last lap Rosberg messed up Turn 1 and Hamilton closed in. Rosberg took the inside line into Turn 2 as Hamilton pulled up on the outside, then Rosberg appeared to drive straight on as if he simply wasn't going to turn. Hamilton turned in, colliding with Rosberg and driving over the German's front wing. By the end of Turn 2, Hamilton had the lead and Rosberg had a broken car. The Brit won, the German puttered home to finish fourth. The incident promoted Max Verstappen to second and Kimi Raikkonen to third. Verstappen scored his second podium for Red Bull after his victory in Spain. Conversely, Raikkonen's third place for Ferrari was more gifted scraps for the scuderia. Daniel Ricciardo came fifth in the second Red Bull, Jenson Button delivered a terrific sixth for McLaren- Honda, Romain Grosjean got Haas back in the points, Carlos Sainz, Jr. secured eighth for Toro Rosso, and Valtteri Bottas in ninth for Williams.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class presentation leaked, debuting in May

Fri, 22 Feb 2013

WorldCarFans was reportedly sent what looks like a dealer presentation on the coming V222 series 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. There have been hints for years as to the kinds of technology the world's best-selling large luxury sedan will contain, and it appears those hints had some foundation. To be shown in Germany on May 15 before a launch window that runs from September to November this year, the evolutionary design will be built of aluminum and steel, using that lighter material for the front end, roof and "detached body parts."
Among the new options buyers will be able to choose are the Rear Seat Package with rear seatbelt airbags and active buckles that extend, a Warmth and Comfort Package with heated seats front and back, heated armrests and side panels, and power rear seats with active ventilation and memory function. There's a chauffeur seating option that comes with 10-way adjustable rear seats, an extendable footrest and folding tables in the front seatbacks.
Blatant technology will be on display via two 12.3-inch screens, one for the dash cluster and one for the COMAND infotainment screen on the instrument panel. The third generation of Nightview Assist Plus will be able to detect animals as well as humans, and the next generation of Surround View will provide high-res views all around the car. A touchpad and a color head-up display will arrive in 2015. It will be the first Mercedes-Benz to utilize LED lighting everywhere, inside and outside the car.
