Up for sale is a 1987 Mercedes 300SDL, W126 series, sedan. This car was a daily driver for many years, and is only for sale because I took a job at General Motors (Chevy Cruze Turbo Diesel, on the way). I took care of this car for many years, but am not the original owner. That said, I know quite a bit about the car. This is my third 1987 300SDL, and the best I've had. The 1987 300SDL is the best diesel sedan from the last century. The 90's versions had engines with significant design issues, and these will literally run forever if well cared for. onto the details....

Fuel: For the past five years I have run different blends of bio-diesel, always from Diesel Green Fuels in Austin. I converted all the fuel lines and have seen no issues. I change the blend based on the temperature, and running the car in Texas means I generally run B100. It's really something to drive for 10 months out of the year without using petroleum. Not many cars can get you there - this one is the best.

Engine: This is a good example of the 6 cylinder introduced in 1986. The car starts well, and drives great. It does not have the original horsepower, but if you're used to diesels this one is fairly standard.

A/C: While the car has a cold AC, it has trouble keeping the large sedan cool when the outside temperature gets above 105.

Body: The paint is not perfect, but there is no rust or large flaws. There are no dents. There are some light scratches on the roof that could probably be taken out.

Tint: To keep the temperature down I added limo tint on the rear windows and rear glass. Add some flags and you'll look like a visiting dictator.

Cluster: I recently replaced the instrument cluster because the odometer gave out. The old one comes with the car, so you can see that the actual mileage is over 300k, not the 109k on the cluster. Now everything works, even the external temp gauge.

Title: Every one of my diesel sedans has been hit while parked. I have never understood what causes this, but this one took a front shot from a very nice drunk lady. It cost the car a radiator, grill and bumper. While the repair was not expensive, the insurance company insisted on issuing a salvage title in order for me to keep the car. The car was also hit by a U-Haul at nearly 2 miles an hour. That cost the car a fender and a tire, so I replaced all 4 tires.

Audio: The car has a nice Alpine in-dash, large amp and large custom sub-woofer. For me, this makes NPR sound like a modern sound system, but I can imagine others might do more with it.

Wheels: These are obviously aftermarket wheels and tires, and I think they fit the car. That said, the original wheels and tires are available if you want them.

Flaws:
There is small leak in main seal that causes the car to drop some oil.
The car only starts in neutral. Easy to fix, but I rather like it.
The dash is starting to crack.
The fuel level sending unit is not working. This causes the gas gauge to malfunction. The new cluster has a working trip odometer, so this has not been an issue.

Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG formalize technical partnership

Thu, 19 Dec 2013

The development of a partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin has been a long time coming. The news dates back to 2008, and over the five years since was supposed to lead to a rejuvenation of both the Maybach and Lagonda brands. That program ultimately fell apart, but the tie-in was forged afresh in July when the two automakers signed a letter of intent over a renewed partnership. And now that partnership has been formalized.
In a deal just announced, Mercedes-AMG will build a new V8 engine for Aston Martin that will power a new generation of luxury GTs for the British marque, presumably to replace the 4.7-liter V8 in the Vantage. The relationship appears to be similar to the one already in place between AMG and Pagani, only in this case, will involve Daimler taking as much as a five-percent stake in Aston Martin and an observer seat on Aston's board.
The technical partnership is also set to lead to the supply of electric and electronic systems, and could incorporate "additional areas of cooperation in the future." Whether that will include a fresh attempt at reviving Lagonda remains to be seen, as does the future of Aston's long-serving, Ford-based 6.0-liter V12 engine. But for now you can read the full announcement below.

The first trailer for Top Gear's 24th season shows a hands-free drag race

Tue, Dec 27 2016

In the excitement over Amazon's new motoring show, it's important to remember that there's a certain series from the BBC that's attempting to get its mojo back for a 24th season. Yes, we're talking about Top Gear. Since Chris Evans' departure earlier this year, Top Gear news has been relatively sparse, particularly as The Grand Tour and its hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond seized headlines. But on Christmas, watchers of the series' YouTube channel caught a glimpse of the first scene from the next season. Featuring hosts Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris, and Rory Reid in what looks like a trio of old, dilapidated cars. We're thinking TG is running a taxi comparison. There's a London black cab and a Mercedes-Benz W210 – a favorite of European cabbies – but we aren't sure where Harris' boxy wagon fits in. Did the Volvo 850 Estate ever serve as a livery vehicle? But it's the basis for this comparison that's weird, because the hosts appear to be having a no-hands drag race. The cars veer off in different directions, traveling across what looks like a snow-covered dirt lot. We're assuming hilarity ensues. And while we don't quite know what they're hoping to accomplish, we are looking forward to watching it go down. Top Gear's 24th season doesn't have an official air date, and the video ends only with a cryptic "Coming Soon." Expect to hear more in the next few months.
