NOTE as os Sunday 9/29 7pm PST: VIN listed in auction, was mistaken it is not for this car- I will correct this mistake as soon as EBay tells me how. Title is clear, it has had 3 titled owners so far....no accident history.

This is a dependable, fun, modern classic, in good 'daily driver' condition needing a little TLC. As one of only 1200 or so 1985 Coupes made, and the last year of this famous series, it is a very collectable Benz. 1985 also saw one-yaer only improvements to the famous diesel drivetrain, including better rear end gearing for better highway mileage and improved shifting.

Positives are the body and mechanics: Body has decent paint, in very good looking and rare original Anthracite Gray metallic color (code 172)  and no visible signs of panel or floorpan rust. All trim is present and it has Bosch Euro headlights. With 270K on the engine I am told the prior owners had the engine and trans rebuilt and given the great oil pressure and good power, this appears to be true. All mechanicals appear to be in good working order except as listed below. The Palomino interior in reasonable good shape. Headliner is perfect, 3 of 4 windows work well, rear glass is original and in nice shape- Dashboard has only a tiny crack, nothing that is truly noticeable. Stops, starts, runs well. All chromes and lenses present and in good shape.Aftermarket CD player gives good sound.

Negatives on the cosmetics are are the typical very dried rubber around the doors; one upward bend at the lower edge of the front fender (pictured) from a road hazard, and a stone chip in the windshield (not large, no spidering). Not working: Tach, cruise, some of the dashboard lights, driver rear 1/4 window, and sunroof motor. Visors and first aid kit, typical cracks, a couple of small tear/age spots on driver seat. Anyone is welcome to come and inspect/drive it (not licensed, but can move up and down my driveway) anytime. Car is garaged, in central/coastal NJ near Sandy Hook (zip 07732) on Route 36 in Highlands.

I bought this car recently intending to a drive and restore over time but just bought a pristine model so this one now is looking for a good home. I have a clear PA title in hand ready for the next owner (It has two prior long term owners, before me). I am asking a reasonable price for a quick sale and don't want to lose too much money on it. Because of the new car I will soon be out of garage space, and this one needs to go soon. Please email with any question. Car is sold as is, where is, andto try to cover my costs, but willing to listen to Best Offers. Looking for fast sale, & it must be driven away within 2 weeks of sale. Thanks for looking!

Mercedes moves R-Class production to AM General in Indiana

Tue, Jan 27 2015

Go back a decade or two and you'd have seen the SUV market polarizing in opposite directions: hard-core off-roaders like the Hummer on the one hand, and passenger-focused crossovers like the Mercedes R-Class on the other. Now their fates are set to intertwine, at least as far as manufacturing is concerned. No longer producing Hummers, AM General (which designed and originally produced the Hummer) has been assigned the task of manufacturing the R-Class at its underused, 675,000 square-foot Commercial Assembly Plant in Mishawaka, IN – part of metropolitan South Bend. The decision was undertaken to allow Mercedes to free up production capacity at its plant in Tuscaloosa, AL, where it also produces the M-Class, GL-Class and C-Class, and where it will soon begin manufacturing the GLE Coupe. The vacation of the R-Class assembly line could be earmarked to make room for that new slant-roofed crossover (which was originally thought to be joining the Tuscaloosa plant as a fifth model) or could pave the way for another model to reach Alabama altogether. The multi-year arrangement to manufacture the R-Class makes AM General the first manufacturer contracted to build Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the US, but hardly the only one in the world. The G-Class – which could, incidentally, be characterized as the German equivalent of the Hummer – is built on Mercedes' behalf by Magna Steyr in Austria, and the company builds many of its passenger and commercial vehicles for local consumption under joint ventures in the Far East especially. The R-Class was first introduced in 2005, and though it's still built in America, it was removed from the company's US lineup back in 2012. However Mercedes confirms that, since 2013, it has been and remains available exclusively in China. That puts the R-Class in the rare position of being manufactured in the United States by (or now for) a foreign automaker but unavailable for sale here. AM General Selected As Mercedes-Benz First and Only Contract Manufacturer of Vehicles in the United States SOUTH BEND, Ind., Jan. 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- AM General LLC and Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc., today announced that Mercedes-Benz has selected AM General to manufacture the Mercedes-Benz R-Class luxury vehicle at AM General's world-class 675,000 square-foot Commercial Assembly Plant.

As US exports top 2 million, is America becoming the world's source of cheap cars?

Mon, Feb 9 2015

North American auto production is booming with 2014 figures just shy of the of the 17.3-million vehicle record set in 2000. With more models being built on the continent, even more are being shipped overseas. Factories in the US exported 2.1 million cars last year – the highest number ever. About half of those went to Canada and Mexico, but more than ever have been heading to places like the Middle East and China. The upswing comes in part from from after-effects from the Great Recession, according to The Wall Street Journal. With a weak dollar and lower production costs after the financial crisis, building vehicles in the US was relatively cheaper and more competitive in the world. At the same time buyers around the world are going crazy for crossovers. According to the WSJ, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are already exporting the majority of their US production of these models overseas. Both automakers have also announced investments to expand production further here to send more vehicles abroad. Even Honda has been shipping more models out of the country than it imported here. There is a concern this international strength could start slowing because the dollar is strengthening against other currencies, though it's too early to know what the actual effect of this could be, according to the WSJ. "Of course, we closely watch currency exchange, but we don't make changes in production or allocation based on temporary fluctuations in the exchange rate," Ford North American boss Joe Hinrichs told the newspaper. Ecclestone wonders if F1's upcoming turbo V6s should get augmented sound [w/videos]

Mon, 08 Apr 2013

While every team on the Formula One grid is worried about making a good showing in this year's championship at the same time as they develop a brand-new car for next year's championship, Bernie Ecclestone and F1 circuit promoters have a different concern: how next year's cars will sound. The current cars use 2.4-liter, naturally-aspirated V8s that can reach 18,000 revolutions per minute and employ dual exhaust, next year's engine formula calls for 1.4-liter turbocharged V6s that are capped at 15,000 rpm and are constrained to a single exhaust outlet. Ecclestone and promoters like Ron Walker believe the new engines sound like lawnmowers and that the less thrilling audio will keep people from coming to races. If Walker's Australian Grand Prix really is shelling out almost $57 million to hold the race, every ticket counts. As a fix, according to a report in Autoweek, Ecclestone "suggests that the only way to guarantee [a good sound] may be to artificially adjust the tone of the V6s."
However, neither the manufacturers nor the governing body of F1, the FIA, think there will be a problem. Ecclestone fears that if the manufacturers "don't get it right" they'll simply leave the sport, but the only three carmakers and engine builders left next year, Renault (its 2014 "power unit" is pictured), Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari are so embedded that it would stretch belief to think they'd leave the table over an audio hiccup - if said hiccup even occurs. And frankly, these issues always precede changes to engine formulas, as they did when the formula switched from V10 to V8; fans, though, are probably less focused on the engines and more on the mandated standardization of the sport and the spec-series overtones that have come with it.
No one knows yet what next year's engines will sound like, but we've assembled a few videos below to help us all start guessing. The first is an engine check on an Eighties-era John Player Special Renault with a 1.5-liter V6 turbo, after that is Ayrton Senna qualifying in 1986 in the Lotus 98T that also had a 1.5-liter V6 turbo, then you'll find a short with a manufactured range of potential V6 engine notes, and then the sound of turbocharged V6 Indycars testing last year at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Any, or none of them, could be Formula One's future.
