1984 Mercedes-benz 300sd Base Sedan 4-door 3.0l on 2040-cars
Gainesville, Virginia, United States
For sale is my 1984 300SD. I am selling it because it can no longer pass inspection due to rust issues. HOWEVER this car has several new or recently replaced parts making it a great parts car, and if you have the ability to get it passed in VA or whatever state you're in, it will be a good car to drive.
The odometer broke at 288,000 miles, and I have put 45,000 miles on it since then, driving to/from my vanpool pickup location and short trips around town for the last 3 years. Prior to that I used it to get to/from school in Atlanta, GA, and also for work-related trips to Chattanooga, TN, Wilmington, NC, and Columbia, SC. The engine and transmission are original, and I have maintenance records from the previous owner, but all maintenance after I purchased the car in 2009 was done by myself, with receipts for big items and oil done every 6 months or 5000 miles whichever came first. List of new and/or recently replaced parts: AC Compressor @ 243,000 miles ($450 new) Brake Booster and Master Cylinder @ 275,000 miles ($310 new) Vaccuum Pump @ 250,000 miles ($360 new) Blower Motor and Heat Pump @265,000 miles ($300 new) Oil Cooler and Hoses @ 279,000 miles ($1000 new) Alternator @ 285,000 miles ($150 new) Air Filter Bracket @ 290,000 miles ($50 new) Belt Tensioner Bolt @ 300,000 miles ($100 new) Driver's Side Motor Mount and Engine Shock @ 305,000 miles ($100 new) Shutoff Valve @ 315,000 miles ($100 new) Driver's Side Lens Cover @320,000 miles ($50 new) Headlight Assembly Driver's Side @ 320,000 miles ($75 new) Unused/Unisintalled Parts included in sale: (These are new parts that I simply will not use) 2 Flex Discs, with nuts and bolts ($100 new) Drive Shaft Support Bearing ($50 new) Drive Shaft Support ($75 new) Passenger Side Motor Mount and Shock ($100 new) Assortment of Filters ($75) Real Tire and Wheel with Mercedes Hubcap as spare ($100) Brake Pads ($75-100) I really do NOT want to get rid of this car, but would happily give it to an enthusiast who would use it as an "organ donor" of sorts or even drive it himself/herself if you can get it to pass inspection. The rust is a real issue. Problems with car: 1) Rust 2) Exhaust needs to be hung by wires. The brackets and rubber exhaust hangers no longer support the exhaust. 3) The car's acceleration is bad even for this make/model. I think the engine and turbo simply need a good cleaning, but it takes a significant amount of time to get to cruising speed. It's not a safety issue. If you are local (within 30 miles) I will help arrange for transporting the car to your location. The parts only go with the car. I will not sell the parts without the car. |

Mercedes-Benz working on S-Class EV in accelerated green car lineup?
Mon, Mar 10 2014With Mercedes-Benz bringing out coupe and plug-in hybrid versions of its S-Class sedan, the German automaker just may follow through with a battery-electric variant as well. That's what the company's Uwe Ernstberger told the folks at Top Gear during the Geneva Motor Show. And while he noted the company still needs to work in a larger-than-usual battery pack and was less than specific with details, he did envision an all-electric S-Class "in the future." Of course, rumors started bubbling about an EV S-Class as far back as 2011, so we'll see. Christian Bokich, department manager for product and technology communications for Mercedes-Benz USA, would not confirm anything about an electric S-Class, but he did give AutoblogGreen an official rundown of MB's upcoming green cars in the US, starting with the launch of the all-electric B-Class ED in July of this year in the ZEV states (launch details for other states are TBA, he said). An S-Class plug-in hybrid is coming in the first half of 2015, followed by a C-Class PHEV closer towards the end of that year in the USA. There is also a C-Class four-cylinder BlueTEC coming at some point in 2016. Until we get more concrete information about the possible S-Class EV, let's review what we know about the PHEV. Last September, Mercedes-Benz started showing off the plug-in hybrid S-Class, saying that it could go as far as 19 miles on electric power alone and had a preliminary fuel efficiency rating of more than 78 miles per gallon, using the more lenient European driving cycle. Earlier this week, Mercedes showed off its S-Class Coupe. That model's US version will have a twin-turbocharged V8 that kicks in 449 horsepower, a few more than the presumptive S-Class EV will have. Ernstberger also said Mercedes would join the ranks of automakers offering autonomous driving systems and mentioned the S-Class as being at the "top of the movement." He held his tongue when asked about the possibility of an S-Class cabriolet.
Mercedes S-Class Magic Body Control ad is clucking awesome
Tue, 24 Sep 2013This is a new ad from Mercedes-Benz. At no point does it show an automobile. Instead, it stars animals, but not the sort you might normally see in car commercial. This ad is all about chickens. It is bizarre, to say the least, with Diana Ross and the Supremes belting it out in the background, but it all kind of comes together when you realize just what Mercedes is hawking (yeah, pun intended).
It's for the manufacturer's Magic Body Control, found on the new S-Class. The system basically analyzes the road and prepares the suspension accordingly, leading to a ride that is, in the words of our own Chris Paukert "nothing short of spooky." You can read about it in our full review of the 2014 S550. Take a look below for the 53-second spot.
2015 Bahrain F1 Grand Prix puts a dark horse in the desert [spoilers]
Mon, Apr 20 2015Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen had said after Malaysia that Ferrari can challenge Mercedes-AMG Petronas purely on pace, beyond the scope of tire wear, in the dry. We didn't see that in China, where Lewis Hamilton easily kept everyone behind and Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel only got close to Mercedes' Nico Rosberg when Rosberg slowed down to conserve his tires. But the Iceman's words seemed prescient during qualifying for the Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix. At the front, nothing has changed so far this year: four races, four pole positions for Lewis Hamilton. Instead of teammate Rosberg next to him, though, he'll look over to see the scarlet Ferrari of Vettel, who took advantage of Rosberg's cautiousness to snatch second place on the grid. In Q2, Rosberg tried to conserve the tires he'd start the race on and said he couldn't get into a groove in Q3, putting in a time 0.147 seconds slower than Vettel. The second Silver Arrows will share his row with the second Ferrari, Raikkonen – yet again – saying he might have left some time on the table during his hot lap but getting around just one tenth off Rosberg's time. Williams is established as the best of the rest behind two teams this year instead of just one last year, Valtteri Bottas claiming fifth ahead of Felipe Massa. Daniel Ricciardo of Infiniti Red Bull Racing said he wants to fight with the Williams', he'll be helped with a good start off the line for the first time this year. Nico Hulkenberg got Force India into Q3 for the first time since the Italian Grand Prix last year and into eighth on the grid, ahead of Carlos Sainz in the Toro Rosso and Romain Grosjean putting in another excellent day's work for Lotus. Come race time, it turned into Mercedes power against Ferrari strategy. When Sky F1 commentator Martin Brundle talks about the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team he often mentions how their engine advantage leads to other advantages throughout the car. Not having to use aerodynamic changes to make up for power unit deficiencies, for instance, means they can run the aero setup they want, which optimizes speed and tire wear throughout a lap. It equates to advantage on top of advantage on top of advantage. That's where Lewis Hamilton is right now, so fundamentally dialed in to his car and his racing that he run the races he wants to run. From the front spot, the Brit ripped off another perfect start and led the field into Turn 1, relinquishing the lead only during pit stops.
