We purchased "Blondie" on EBay a few years ago when she had around 260,000 miles. We flew from NC to San Diego and drove her back across the country. Our family of 5 is outgrowing her since our daughters are getting bigger so we are going to let her go.

The pictures shown are:

  • Big Tire is in Boron, CA this spring at the Borax mine
  • Picture with the bus is in KS last November
  • The picture with the mountain spring is here in Oregon in July

We travel full time in our unique school bus RV conversion, and tow Blondie on a trailer behind the bus. Visit our blog and you will see videos and pictures of Blondie scattered about in the posts.

Now, she shows around 340,000 miles. The gauge cluster was replaced before we bought it with a gauge that had more mileage than the original odometer.  I had intended to have the current cluster rolled back roughly 70,000 miles to match the original set, but I never got around to it.  So, I am listing it with the mileage that appears on the current odometer, but it should be closer to 270,000.  I am a mechanic and tinkerer so I keep her going for our family. I would send my wife and girls back to NC today driving her with no concerns about safety or reliability. I have a long record of fuel mileage, and she gets an average in the 26-28 mpg range while hauling our family of 5 and our gear. I made a wooden rack to haul bikes and coolers on the roof that can be easily removed if you don't want it on there.

Here are the things I have replaced since we have been her caretakers:

  • Front wheel bearings
  • Lower ball joints
  • Front brakes & Rotors
  • Hydraulic suspension accumulators
  • High pressure suspension hose
  • Power window switches
  • New JVC stereo with iPod/mp3 plugs and remote
  • Glow plugs
  • Diesel return hoses on injectors
  • Vacuum hoses
  • Rear tires were purchased this spring while in Vegas, front are okay but worn on edges (haven't met an older Benz yet that didn't wear the outer edges of tires)
  • Belts
  • Air filter
  • I rebuilt the suspension pump
  • Front washer pump
  • Battery (replaced 8-19-13)
  • AC converted to R134A Refrigerant
  • I modified the crankcase breather so it no longer goes into the intake. This modification is not pretty and leaks a little but it is much better for the car. It can easily be returned to the original configuration if you like, I can do that before you pick her up.
  • Power Antenna replaced with boosted antenna for stereo, I covered the hole with a closely matched vinyl sticker so a power antenna may be installed later.
What does she need:

  • Could use a rebuild of the suspension leveling valve since it lowers when you turn the car off
  • Alternator does not charge at idle but charges fine at highway RPM (which is why we haven't replaced it)
  • Manual sunroof needs repair since it had a colored pencil get jammed in it (it is propped up by a small piece of wood that can't be seen and does not leak)
  • Turbo works great but needs new o-rings which I have (it leaks externally but not severe)
  • Rear hatch seal leaks a little and rear carpet gets wet, The hatch also squeaks while driving but mostly on very bumpy roads.
  • Front floors get wet so we removed carpet and use rubber mats and leave floor drains open
  • The windshield and rear window were lightly scratched during a sandstorm in Arizona this past January, not horrible but noticeable

She comes with a new set of tire chains and a good spare. Due to the weight, she runs great in the snow.  I think I have a set of rear brake shoes and a steering linkage rebuild kit that I will be letting go with her too.

I can replace the alternator for an additional $150 above final sale price if you like.  Again, we didn't replace it since it charges fine at highway speeds.

I have replaced the engine oil, transmission fluid, and gear oil in differential with AmsOil Synthetic products. The engine oil will be changed with fresh AmsOil 15W-40 during this auction listing.  I occasionally blend filtered WVO in the factory tank with diesel fuel, but have not made any conversion modifications. This car is a good running daily driver that we will be sad to see go. I will wash her inside and out prior to you picking her up. I will be happy to answer any questions you might have, so don't hesitate to contact me.

We will continue to drive her until the end of the auction.  She has a clear NC title that I have with me here in OR.

I will be happy to deliver her to you anywhere in the country, a road trip to FL would be a walk in the park for Blondie, if you pay my return expenses and meals during travel.  Contact me prior to the end of the auction to work out details, I could also meet you with her at PDX (Portland, OR airport).

Her replacement has already been purchased, "Boober" is a 1987 Toyota Van Wagon that will fit on our trailer. You can see Boober in the video of Blondie.

$500 payment due within 48 hours of auction ending, final balance due within 7 days NO EXCEPTIONS.

    Top horsepower-per-dollar cars in 2017

    Tue, Feb 17 2015

Bang for the buck. That quasi-scientific statistic is bandied about by motor heads everywhere from classrooms to barrooms, though the truth of the matter is that it's exceedingly complex to measure. A fair performance-per-dollar index would include something like cross-referencing MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price) with point-to-point times on a track or driving route, which is obviously hard to do comprehensively. But, for the sheer joy of talking about cars and playing with a big spreadsheet, there's always the horsepower-per-dollar index, which is more straightforward, albeit hilariously flawed. There are vagaries even with this simple formula, of course: MSRP for vehicles can change at a moment's notice, to say nothing of the bottom-line shifting that happens with local deals or showroom negotiation. For this list we're running with the straight MSRP wherever possible, and as recently reported as we can get it. All the vehicles on this list are 2017 models, and all trims are reported where the lowest price and differing power levels intersect. Some choices were made for personal preference and some for sanity, avoiding things like all 48 trim levels of the Ford Transit, all with the same horsepower). If this list were a simple top ten, or even a top fifty, you'd be bored to tears with all the red, white and blue that is represented. Following perfectly with conventional wisdom, American cars really do lead the world where hp/$ is concerned. So, for the sake of variety (and the sheer joy of seeing a minivan 'win' one round of this thing) I've sorted out some top five and bottom five lists for broad power categories. Let's dive in. Less Than 100 Horsepower Okay, okay, this is hardly a category we'll grant you. But we've often tried to click off all the sub-100-hp cars on sale in the US, and making this list gave us an excuse. It also illustrates that none of these smallish vehicles bring cheap horsepower to the table - for that you'll need a motorcycle. The segment-leading Chevy Spark (above) asks just over $139 for each hp, and that Smart Fortwo Electric Drive has hp on sale for about the same price as its very distant family cousin, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG (insert your favorite Smart joke here... we know you want to).

    Mercedes to market Tesla-powered 2014 B-Class EV in U.S.

    Thu, 05 Jul 2012

Looks like another Tesla Motors investor will be looking to cash in on their connection. Autoweek reports Mercedes-Benz will offer their B-Class in the U.S. with Tesla propulsion.
The magazine says their source at the German automaker confirms plans for a B-Class electric-only vehicle. While Tesla already provides battery packs for the battery-powered Smart ForTwo, the B-Class EV will reportedly have Tesla batteries, motor and other components. U.S. residents should be able to procure one sometime in 2014.
The same Mercedes source says plans for a hybrid B-Class have been postponed for now. Adding a range-extending, gasoline-powered engine to an electric vehicle would put the car into a different class for which rebates and incentives aren't as favorable in the States.

Sales start for $146,000 Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug In Hybrid

    Sun, Aug 3 2014

Mercedes-Benz's first production plug-in hybrid is chock full of astounding numbers, including the price tag. The base price is 108,944.50 euros, or about $146,000 US. If that didn't make your eyes glaze over, the Daimler division is ready to take your down payments now that the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid is officially on sale. Deliveries to European dealerships start in September. Details on the PHEV sedan were divulged last August and it was first shown off at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show. Benz calls it the, "first luxury saloon with the performance of a V8 and the fuel consumption of a compact model." That's no exaggeration. The car's powertrain that pairs a 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo with an electric motor that delivers 436 horsepower and a 0-62 mile per hour acceleration time of just 5.2 seconds. Top speed is 155 miles an hour. On the green side, the car can go as far as almost 21 miles on electric power alone and gets a fuel-efficiency rating, on the more lenient European driving cycle, of 84 miles per gallon equivalent. The car also includes a so-called COMAND navigation system that tweaks how the electric motor is used based on the driver's desired route. Very high-tech. We've got Mercedes-Benz's press release below. Sales release for S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID: First PLUG-IN HYBRID with a star starts With immediate effect the Mercedes-Benz S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID can be ordered for prices from 108,944.50 euros[1]. The S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID blends an ultramodern hybrid drive configuration with the unique innovations and the luxurious equipment and appointments of the S-Class. The luxury saloon with a long wheelbase impresses with unique dynamism and efficiency. Thanks to standard pre-entry climate control it also offers unique climate comfort. In September the first certified three-litre luxury saloon in the world will be arriving at the dealers - a further milestone on the road to emission-free mobility. "The new S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID offers our customers the entire range of innovations that make our new S-Class so successful, and thanks to its intelligent operating strategy ensures outstanding driving pleasure and dynamism combined with the highest efficiency. Moreover, it allows completely emission-free driving for up to 33 km," says Ola Kallenius, Executive Vice-President for Sales at Mercedes-Benz Cars. "The S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID is the first luxury saloon with the performance of a V8 and the fuel consumption of a compact model.
