1983 Mercedes Estate Wagon 300 Turbo Diesel Estate Wagon.  This is a very rare 4-speed manual wagon with low miles.  I purchased this car a year ago, thinking it would be a good car for my daughter to drive but she has other interests; therefore, I have never really driven the car as much as I should.  If you know these cars, you know they are built to run literally forever and this one is no exception.  She starts and runs perfectly, and the prior owner continuously maintained her.  She will get right up to highway speed and can cruise at 70-80 MPH with no issue, or around town.  All the original books and manuals are present, full spare tire, interior -- as you can see -- is in very good condition with no headliner drooping and no dashboard cracking with the exception of a very minor crack, which you can see in the photos.  Brand new Michelin tires with less than 10,000 miles them.  All four doors lock solidly, two working keys, and the vacuum door looks do actually work from the drivers side!  I have garaged the car since I have owned it and recently had it detailed which I will do again prior to shipping.

1" trailer hitch allows you to mount a hitch bike carrier, or tow a light load.  Has estate wagon luggage carrier which looks awesome.  Custom center console cup-holder with wood-grain to match the interior, which sits underneath the console armrest.  When the armrest is in the upright position, you can use the cup-holder.

The car is a beautiful white, very glossy paint, with navy blue boot-stripe accent.  She drives straight with no pull at the wheel.  With the four speed manual, which the prior owner had professionally installed, you get a much better acceleration than the automatic version.  This is why I bought this car -- for the manual transmission!  That is not to say it is fast -- these things are tanks, but there is better acceleration and control with the four speed manual.

Shifts and brakes with no issues.  Has original working stereo, with automatic antenna (working, new motor) and all four speakers work and produce quality (1983) sound.  The fader rocker knob on the console works too to allow you to balance the sound.  There are new custom Berber car mats in the for the driver and front passenger, which are very cool.  Vehicle passed N.C. inspection last year. Brakes are good, very solid.  Sunroof works great, automatic windows work great, and auto mirrors work great.

Rear window defroster is good, as are the rear and front wipers.  All buttons and blinkers work.  Cruise control is disabled because of the installation of the manual drive-train.  All the belts, hoses, etc. appear to be in fine condition and I would have no issue driving this car 500 miles, although driving in town is much more fun because fellow enthusiasts will greet you with a "how old is that car?" and you say 1983 they can't believe it!  Heat and air settings all seem to run fine.

If you are serious about these cars, you know they do go forever but also please understand it is a 1983 vehicle.  Not everything is perfect.  I will do my best to list any deficiencies:  (1) The manual brake light comes on intermittently (brake works perfectly, just the light can go on depending on the day); (2) the RPM gauge works intermittently (speedometer has never been an issue); (3) there are two buttons missing from the stereo, which you can see in the photos; (4) you can see a small spot of paint/body rust on the rear tailgate; (5) 4" tear in driver seat along the seam, which you can see in photos, seems minor and can be stitched along the seam; (6) vehicle got bumped on rear bumper last year by a very nice nurse who was looking the wrong way -- I showed a photo of the rear bumper and it is virtually impossible to see the fender indentation, but it is there -- shows you how solid these cars are; (7) the A/C, which worked when I purchased the vehicle has unfortunately stopped -- have not had a mechanic repair, so consider it inop.

As mentioned in the bidding specs, this is a low reserve "as is where is" auction.  I will try to answer any questions you have but I am not a mechanic or car nut so I have my limitations!  It is pretty rare to find one of these with manual transmission and I hope you enjoy her if you are the winning bidder.  She is a pretty sweet little wagon and my wife is anxious not to sell her because we use her for Friday date night in town!  That said, she is for sale with a low reserve because I cannot use!

I will be happy to assist you with meeting a shipper -- the car is located at a private residence; however, I will meet a shipper in an accessible location to assure the car is loaded and off to you.  Clean title North Carolina title in hand -- no liens.

Good luck, and please post any questions you have!  I am happy to discuss by phone as well if you need to gather comfort about the transaction.

Lexus NX, BMW i3 to get Super Bowl commercials

Mon, Jan 19 2015

At this point last year, we'd been getting news on automotive-focused Super Bowl commercials for more than two months. The teasers hadn't come out yet, but manufacturers lined up for the super-expensive spots were making their intentions known. This year? Almost nada, until this week. BMW has said it will air a 60-second spot promoting the i3 during the first quarter of the game, the Munich firm returning to The Big Game after a four-year absence. BMW says, "Big ideas like the BMW i3 take a little getting used to, and the creative idea surrounding our spot will play on this analogy." We say that pitching a tiny range-extended hatchback during the beer-iest American sports orgy of the year should make for some neat commentary afterward. Lexus is putting its new NX crossover in the second Super Bowl commercial it's ever aired, eschewing the glitter of celebrities and glamor for a straight-shooting spot and the tagline, "Be seen, be heard, make some noise." Joining those two are Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Toyota. The six confirmed carmakers are down from eleven last year, when car spots made up a quarter of the total ad time. The price to do business for 30 seconds this year: reportedly around $4.5 million, up a stacks from last year's $4 million. You can watch the Lexus commercial in the video above, and beneath that, the BMW press release below has a bit more information on its effort. BMW to Advertise All-Electric BMW i3 during Super Bowl XLIX. The all-electric BMW i3 is featured in a 60-second spot during Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday, February 1, 2015. Woodcliff Lake, NJ – January 15, 2015... Today, BMW announced plans to feature the all-electric BMW i3 in a 60-second spot during Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday, February 1, 2015. After a 4-year hiatus, BMW will be returning to the big game with a commercial during the first quarter. "As one in three Americans will tune in to watch the Super Bowl, we are thrilled to use this platform to educate viewers on the importance of electric mobility," said Trudy Hardy, Vice President of Marketing, BMW of North America. "Big ideas like the BMW i3 take a little getting used to, and the creative idea surrounding our spot will play on this analogy." BMW i is BMW's forward-looking and sustainable brand dedicated to solving many of the mobility challenges faced by the world's most densely populated cities. The BMW i3 is the first of the BMW i vehicles constructed from the ground up primarily of carbon fiber.

McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari call for unfreezing F1 engines

Mon, Dec 29 2014

Formula One is a hugely expensive sport. Not only do you have enormous salaries and logistical expenses, as you would in any other sport, but each team also spends huge sums developing their own chassis from the ground up – and so too do the participating automakers in developing the engines. One of the ways the series organizers mitigate those costs is by freezing development. So once the new crop of V6 turbo hybrid powertrains were developed, that was it. But now three of the of the sport's leading teams are calling on the FIA to unfreeze engine development. Their reason? Unfair advantage. There's little question that Mercedes did the best job of developing its "power unit" to meet the new regulations that took effect at the beginning of this past season. That's how the Mercedes team won all but three of the grands prix this season and finished with at least one car on the podium at every single race. It's also a big part of how the teams that bought their engines from Mercedes this season managed to consistently outperform the other non-works-supported teams. That clear advantage is why Red Bull, Ferrari and now McLaren are calling for engine development to be unfrozen. Their argument is that, under the current locked-down status quo, their engine suppliers (Renault, Ferrari and Honda, respectively) cannot possibly catch up. So unless the FIA and Formula One Management want the next few seasons to be the kind of absolute blow-outs that this past season was, these leading teams argue, the powers that be are going to have to make some changes. For its part, Mercedes naturally counters that unfreezing engine development would send costs spiraling out of control. But then of course it stands to lose the most by re-opening engine development. If those three teams, however, closely intertwined as they are with the three other engine suppliers participating in next year's championship, manage to solicit enough support from the other customer teams and bring the matter to a vote, Mercedes may very well find itself out-numbered. This or That: Mercedes S-Class 350SD vs. 2003 Jaguar XJR [w/poll]

Thu, Mar 26 2015

Budget. It's a wretched word, whether you're going out to eat, shipping for a new outfit or, more relevant to today's discussion, buying a car. Massive marketing machines have convinced us, as a population, to buy the best you can afford, repercussions be damned – If you've saved up some money, spend it! All of it, on whatever it is that currently sits atop your personal Amazon wishlist, be it a Timex that takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin', a $17,000 Gold Apple Watch or a $60,000 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. But what if the best you can afford is... say, $12,815? For that price, you can buy a brand-new 2015 Nissan Versa (including destination), assuming you're happy with zero options and a manual transmission. For that price, you'll get standard air conditioning, a CD player and... well, a warranty. Pretty sensible choice, Captain Frugal. But also ridiculously uninspired. And so that brings us to today's edition of This or That, in which two Autoblog editors pick differing sides of an argument and duke it out to see which one of us can convince you, dear reader, is better. Or at least less wrong. You be the judge. As a refresher, I'm two-and-two on these challenges, having lost the first and second editions before storming back in rounds three and four. Today, as alluded to above, we decided to throw our collective brainpower (oh lord, what have we done?) at what may be the single most difficult question currently confounding the best minds our planet has to offer: What is the best used used luxury car you can buy for the price of a 2015 Nissan Versa? Shall we meet our contenders? Allow me to introduce you to the most perfect luxury car money can buy (assuming the amount of money you're holding is equal to the amount of the cheapest new car currently sold in America, the Nissan Versa). My pick is the 1991 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Not just any S-Class, but the legendary W126, which was produced between 1979 and 1992. And not just any W126, either, but one powered by a 3.5-liter turbodiesel engine. And with that, I send the argument to my esteemed colleague, Associate Editor Chris Bruce. Bruce: Jeremy, we had over $12,000 to budget for this challenge, and the best you can manage is a 24-year-old diesel Mercedes? I love oil-burners as much as any other auto writer with their mountains of torque and huge cruising range, but you're making this too easy on me. Also, you're really choosing a brown, diesel, German luxury sedan?
