1982 Mercedes-Benz 300SD.  5 cylinder diesel with an automatic transmission.  Approximately 250,000 miles.  Daily driver.  Starts, runs, drives fine.  I've owned this vehicle since 1997, and put about 118K miles on it in that time.  Other than routine maintenance, I've not had any issues with the car.  I bought it from a dealer, and I have quite a few maintenance records from the previous owners.  I was told that the transmission had been rebuilt at some point.  Since I've owned it, it's been kept in a carport.  For the past few years, it's been driven very little.  My oil change records show about 3K miles per year since 2006.

The car is not perfect, so please read carefully before bidding, look at all the photos, and ask questions.  The car is located in Lexington, KY.  You are welcome to look at it here, or contract with a local professional mechanic to check it over.  If you'd like me to take other photos, please ask.

Body:  paint is pretty good.  It was repainted at some point, and there are rust spots showing on the driver's door, at the right rear fender well and a few other smaller places.  See the photos. No collision damage, and to the best of my knowledge it's not ever had any bodywork (other than the repaint and a previous repair of rust spots).  Electric sunroof works.  Interior is fair.  Rear seats are in excellent shape, front passenger seats have cracks in the leather.  Dash has one crack on the driver's side.

Engine:  Starts fine, even in cold weather - block heater is installed for very cold conditions.  Runs fine. Oil pressure is good - photo of instruments is taken with the engine running.   Battery is new.

All five tires have good tread.

Here's a list of all the miscellaneous issues I'm aware of:

Dash lights are out
Power door locks don't work, but they work manually
Passenger side windshield wiper doesn't move.  It's stuck in the parked position.  Driver's wiper works fine.
Odometer quit moving a year or so ago.  It says 243315, but it has no more than 250,000.  Speedometer works fine.
No radio, but there's a space for one.  The original Blaupunkt quit some years ago.  Wiring is still in place.
Air conditioning is feeble at best
Left turn signal doesn't self-cancel
Slight clunk in the right front - I assume it's a ball joint.
A few missing plastic bits, such as the buttons on the end of the passenger's seat adjustment switch.

I would imagine that a thorough inspection by a professional mechanic would discover other things I'm not aware of, so please bid accordingly and if possible inspect the car in person or arrange for a local professional to check it out for you.  I've done my best to accurately represent the condition of this car, but I'm not an expert on this or any other car !

I'm also advertising the car locally, so I do reserve the right to end the auction early.

Again, please ask if there are any questions.

Thanks for looking.

Weekly Recap: Toyota propels hydrogen fuel cells

Sat, Jan 10 2015

Toyota is serious about hydrogen fuel cells, and it wants the auto industry to follow suit. The Japanese automaker said this week it's releasing 5,680 fuel cell patents from around the world, including technologies used on its upcoming sedan, the 2016 Mirai. The move is unusual, but not unprecedented, as Tesla similarly released its electric vehicle patents last year. The idea for Tesla, and now for Toyota, is to spur development of alternative propulsion. "By eliminating traditional corporate boundaries, we can speed the development of new technologies and move into the future of mobility more quickly, effectively and economically," said Bob Carter, Toyota Motor Sales senior vice president of automotive operations, in a statement. Toyota's fuel cell patents will be free to use through 2020, though patents related to producing and selling hydrogen will remain open forever. Toyota said it would like companies that use its patents to share their own hydrogen patents, but won't require it. "What Toyota's doing is really a logical move, and really a good move for the industry," Devin Lindsay, principal powertrain analyst with IHS Automotive, told Autoblog. The announcement was made at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It comes as Toyota prepares to launch the hydrogen-powered Mirai in a limited number late this year in California. The launch will be extended to the Northeastern United States next year. Toyota also has announced plans to support networks of fueling stations in each region to try to smooth consumer adoption. The Mirai has a 300-mile range on a tank of hydrogen, and it takes about five minutes to refill. Fuel cells have been receiving increased attention recently, and Audi and Volkswagen debuted hydrogen-powered cars at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. Honda, another proponent of the technology, also showed its updated FCV concept in November in Japan. The company, however, has delayed its fuel cell sedan a year until 2016. Like Toyota, Honda says its hydrogen-powered car will have a range of 300 miles or more. Meanwhile, Hyundai currently offers leases for fuel-cell powered Tucsons, which have a 265-mile range, in Southern California. Despite the optimism some automakers have for fuel cells, the technology still faces barriers. A lack of filling stations has long held it back, and many consumers are not familiar with the potential benefits.

Hollywood stars drink hydrogen B-Class F-Cell emission water in Death Valley [UPDATE]

Tue, Feb 4 2014

A plug-in electric vehicle can be used to power a house during a winter storm, but if you're more worried about the heat of, say, Death Valley, then maybe you'll want a Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell along. That's the message of a new video from Daimler and starring Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds) and Joshua Jackson (Fringe) that promotes the company's hydrogen-powered car. The gist? You can drink the tailpipe emissions. The two Hollywood stars drove in Death Vally without any water in their F-Cell but had a special tank hooked up to the tailpipe to collect the H2O drips as they drove in 100+ degree temperatures. There's a reason these two actors were chosen, since they've been driving an F-Cell in their daily lives for two years, according to the Diamler press release. The text is, shall we say, a bit hyperbolic - "Their lives rely on the emissions of the B-Class F-CELL" it says, totally ignoring the film crew that is obviously along for the ride and more than likely had a few bottles with them. Also, when the California Fuel Cell Partnership promoted the same idea a few years ago, it clarified that, "A fuel cell doesn't produce enough water to fill your glass. ... If fact, fuel cells produce about the same amount of water as gasoline vehicle – about 1/3 cup for a full day of driving." Thus, this whole thing is a Hollywood stunt, but it's a visually effective one. See for yourself in the mini-movie below. UPDATE: Daimler has told AutoblogGreen that there was no "extra Hollywood magic" needed for the water collected in the video. Instead, Madeleine Herdlitschka, who works at global communications for Mercedes-Benz Cars, said, "Considering the technical characteristics, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL emits about 9 kg of water vapor per kg of hydrogen while driving. The vehicle has a hydrogen capacity of about 3.7 kg, what is sufficient for a max. of about 400 km of range. A tailor-made construction, designed by the production company Markenfilm Crossing in cooperation with our fuel cell experts, made it possible to collect the water in a tank - previously cooling the vapor with a specially designed pipe system."
