1981 Mercedes 300SD

The good:
- this car has been a restoration project over the past year and a half with much more invested than the asking price
- runs great and does not leak ANY fluids
- straight body, good paint and perfect glass, tinted windows
- mostly clean interior, no cracks in dash, floor mats in good shape, premium stereo with CD, bluetooth and line in (original stock stereo available)
- operable sunroof, all power windows and power seats work
- working AC system (converted by Nick' Automotive)
- recent brake pads, 4 good tires
- ~300k miles, engine recently replaced and every gasket replaced except head gasket.
- complete transmission reseal kit recently installed by Miramar transmission, San Diego
- recently rebuilt turbo and vacuum pump
- replaced fuel screen at tank, rubber fuel lines compatible with biodiesel and all new hoses (hard fuel lines, radiator hoses, fuel pump hose, flexible gas lines) in engine compartment.
- all new air, oil, fuel filters.
- straight grill, incredibly straight, all original body and excellent paint
- spare parts available if desired
- too many things to list, you have to see this car
- Biodiesel ready! (never run on vegetable oil, but often ran B20 from Pearson petroleum in San Diego) Daily driver ready for a fraction of the cost of a new car and great gas mileage!

Things still needed to be in perfect condition:
- Odometer is now stuck near 300k miles. Replacement instrument cluster purchased, just not installed.
- Wood paneling around transmission shift and climate control is worn out and starting to crack
- Some minor tears in seats
- Turn signals do not turn off after turn (extra steering column and steering wheel from another 300SD available)
- door locks do not all go down when locking driver's side door (require to be locked/unlocked manually). I have been told this is an easy fix and that there is an electrical vacuum pump not related to the main vacuum that would need to replaced to fix this
- A/C recently repaired and hold compression, but I accidently leaked the AC refrigerant and lost the charge when attempting to use the adapters to refill the A/C on my other diesel Mercedes
- Wheel rims are in good shape, but could use restoration to be in excellent condition

In Which Mercedes' Sprinter Becomes A Long-Distance Sherpa
In the wintery wilds of northern Alaska, even the cute little critters want to kill you.
As I am about to nod off on my long leg flight from Minneapolis to Anchorage ahead of driving to the Arctic Circle, the friendly twenty-something Alaskan knitting furiously in the seat next to me pauses and says, "When you're driving up there, don't open your windows." In the dead of winter? I hadn't planned on cruising alfresco, but her warning to keep the glazing snugged against the weatherstripping is one I would take to heart. She continues: "If you leave 'em open, a fox is liable to jump right in. There are lots of rabid foxes up there, and they leap into your car and just Go. To. Town." And here I was, thinking that a curious bear or maybe an ill-placed moose in the road was going to be my biggest potential four-legged threat. In the wintery wilds of northern Alaska, even the cute little critters want to kill you.

First official shot of Mercedes S-Class Coupe leaks out

Mon, 10 Feb 2014

With the official debut for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe expected tomorrow, it shouldn't be a surprise that some clicky fingers have already managed to uncover an official image of the car before the unveiling. Outside of this sole image, though, there's precious little detail on the new car.
First posted by Autofilou and then picked up by WorldCarFans, the production S-Class Coupe isn't far off from the concept car we saw a few months back in Frankfurt. Like the concept, the leggy production model appears related, albeit distantly, to the S-Class Sedan. The hood and front fascia are longer and lower, befitting of a two-door, while the character lines in the profile are more pronounced. Obviously, the beltline and slim, B-pillarless greenhouse are coupe-only items. We can't see any details on the back of the car, although it does appear that the long hood has a correspondingly short rear deck.
We'll have all the details on the official replacement for the CL-Class when it makes its full debut tomorrow. Until then, what do you think of this lone image? Does it appear that Mercedes has got it right? In terms of design, where would you rank this with the departing CL-Class? Have your say in Comments.

2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600 First Drive

Mon, Jan 19 2015

Imagine the audacity: during the salad days of the early 2000s, the company that invented the automobile – already synonymous with class-leading luxury – sought to further expand its portfolio by crashing the ultraluxury party. Going up against the likes of Rolls-Royce and Bentley, Mercedes-Benz traded its unmistakable Three-Pointed Star for a Mighty Mouse-like logo, exhuming a stately, long-dead German marque originally founded in 1909. The long-wheelbase Maybach 62 listed at an epic $360,000, while later spinoffs included curiosities like the nearly $700,000 Zeppelin, and a roofless, seven-figure limousine dubbed Laundaulet. By the time the financial bubble finally burst in 2008, the brand's fate was all but sealed, with US sales dropping into the double digits. It limped along another four years, but when the nameplate finally went kerplunk, it left behind it a trail of disappointed movers, shakers, moguls and rappers. The perfect postmodern metaphor for the brand's funeral pyre? Kanye West and Jay-Z's Otis music video, in which a perfectly fine Maybach is chopped and deconstructed, flames spewing out the tailpipes as it powerslides through an empty parking lot. Meet The (Sorta) New Boss Rising from the ashes of hubris is the 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600, a recalibrated stab at high-end luxury with a startlingly similar, yet different, approach to its forbear. Like the last go, the new sled features a significantly longer wheelbase, which stretches 8.1 inches over the standard S600. Additional sound damping helps it claim the quietest rear cabin in all of production automobiledom, and posher trim bits include a rim of wood surrounding the reclining rear seats. Among the livery-focused special features is a rearview mirror-mounted microphone to amplify the driver's voice, an available rear fridge, and an executive seat package with folding tray tables. The super high-end hallmarks are there – a twin-turbo V12 dispatching sub-5 second 0 to 60 times, a stunning 24 speaker Burmester sound system, double-M branded silver plate champagne flutes, et al. – but the hyperinflated price tag is not. Starting at $189,350, roughly half the cost of the old flagship, the new Maybach isn't even the most expensive Mercedes-Benz you can buy. That distinction goes to the S65 AMG Coupe, which empties your coffers to the tune of $230,900.
