1980 Mercedes Benz 300SD Turbo Diesel

I have owned this car since 2006.  I will let the photos mostly speak for themselves and you can contact me with any questions.  Beside that, this is what I know about the car:

218,838 original miles on a 3.0L 5cyl Turbo Diesel engine.  I bought it from a guy in Newport Beach, CA and he bought it from the original owner who lived in Louisiana.  All original paperwork comes with the car.  From what I can tell, everything is orignal except for the following:  paintjob, dashboard cover because of 2 large cracks in original dash, brand new wool seat covers because front seats are cracking, floor matts, wheels (but I think they look better than the original), aftermarket biodiesel retrofit (which can easily be removed).  the body is in great condition.  I was going to give it a paint job before I posted this but I could only afford about $1500 and thought that whomever wanted this car would probably want to give it a better paint job and it would seem like I was hiding something if I gave it a half-ass one.  This car is worth a really good paint job.

The car runs great.  The turbo is strong.  I've replaced the following since I owned it:  tires, alternator (Bosch), voltage regulator, battery, all belts, tie arms and other steering components, vacuum parts, glow plugs.

Things that I know are wrong with the car right now:  rear passenger side window doesn't work, Air Con works intermittently, steering box slowly leaks fluid, gas gauge needs cleaning as it sticks.  There are two small rust locations: one on the front driver's quarter panel by the wheel and the other by the rear quarter panel by the wheel.  Both are superficial but I would recommend grinding them out before paint job.

Do some reading online about this car.  There's a reason you can't find another one on ebay right now.  They are build to last and this one is solid.

I'm starting the bidding at $3000 WITH NO RESERVE (changed from $2000 with reserve on 4/18)

Contact me via email if you have any questions.

A couple of good reads about the 300SD

VW looking to MAN up, ditch Mercedes van deal

Wed, 16 Jan 2013

Unlike the US, the commercial truck market throughout the rest of the world is chocked full of competitors from many different automakers. Since 2006, Volkswagen has had a fullsize van called the Crafter that was a result of a partnership with Daimler AG and based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. This partnership is supposed to last through 2016, but Reuters is reporting that VW might be looking to end its relationship with Daimler and create its own van in cooperation with German truck and bus maker MAN.
The article says that VW AG has more than a 75-percent stake in MAN, which would essentially be keeping the new commercial vehicle in-house. Even if VW bolts, Daimler still has a deal worked out in the commercial truck industry between its subsidiary Mitsubishi Fuso and Renault-Nissan to supply the other with different trucks.

Aston Martin signs Letter of Intent for technical partnership with AMG

Thu, 25 Jul 2013

A little over two months ago came reports that Daimler and Aston Martin were in talks, again, about "supply and technical-cooperation agreements." The next step has been taken with Aston Martin announcing that it has signed a Letter of Intent that looks "towards a technical partnership" with Mercedes-AMG GmbH, and the two companies aiming to have definitive agreements done by year's end.
While it will get to use certain electric and electronic components from AMG, the true golden egg for the maker of the Vanquish will be the ability to develop a new line of "bespoke V8 powertrains" that will be fitted to "a new generation of models." In return for opening up the larder, Daimler will get a non-voting stake of up to five percent of Aston Martin.
Nothing else is being said about the tie-up for the moment, but there's a press release below with a few more details.

Mercedes was set to sell version of Nissan Titan, now Infiniti might instead

Wed, 18 Sep 2013

Mercedes-Benz Titan. Mercedes-Benz Frontier. Mercedes-Benz pickup truck. None of these things roll off the tongue particularly well. We'd like to think that's the reason Daimler opted to kill the idea of rebadged Titan and Frontier pickups from corporate ally Nissan. In reality, the execution before the Frankfurt Motor Show was due to more complicated issues.
Yes, Mercedes, byword for German luxury, style and quality, would have slapped a three-pointed star on a pair of Japanese pickup trucks that have failed to resonate with consumers in the world's largest truck market. That slapping of badges isn't much of an exaggeration, at least on the outside. According to the report from Road & Track, the truck's front clip would have been tweaked, but beyond that, the sheetmetal would have been unchanged. The interior would have received a more thorough going-over by the team at Mercedes, while the suspension and noise, vibration and harshness tuning would have also received significant attention.
The trucks would have ended up being sold through the light-commercial branch of Mercedes-Benz - the same folks that will happily sell you a Sprinter van - had the deal gone through. Issues arose, though, first with the engines. Mercedes wanted a wider range of powertrains to allow it to tune models for specific markets, while Nissan said it couldn't engineer the wide variety of engines that MB wanted to drop under the hood. For the smaller truck, meanwhile, MB was interested in a hybrid or plug-in variant, according to R&T, although this was also shot down by Nissan.
