1978 Mercedes 300D, 4 door, 4 spd. automatic, 5 cyl. diesel. Almond color with tan vinyl interior. Original Becker AM/FM 4 speaker Stereo. Nice wood trim. Originally a Georgia car, I have owned it for 3 years. The previous MASS owner owned it for 5 years. I have service records and receipts for the last 8 years. In the last 3 years, I have done the following work:

All New Monarch fuel injectors, injection pump Bosh calibrated, new glow plugs. New Bosal complete exhaust system. 4 new Bilstein shocks. Replaced transmission and new fluid. New front calipers, master cylinder and brake pads. New water pump, heater hoses and thermostat, system flushed. Adjusted/ checked valve clearance every year. Air and fuel filter. Rebuilding of the vacuum pump. New tie rod one side and 2 new front tires, alignment of front end. Rear tires and appx. half worn.  New sunroof wiper seals and cleaning of drainage channels, lubricated. No leaks. Replaced old horsehair filler in rear seat with uphostery grade polyurethane foam.
The car runs good and has plenty of power considering that it is a heavy car with a small engine. I have used Power Service lubricant/ injection cleaner in it consistently in every tank. Will cruise comfortably at highway speeds, 70+. Front end is tight but the steering box has a little play, appx. 1" movement on the steering wheel. Nice original chrome wheel covers and grill. Glass is free of scratches and pits, no haze or wiper damage. Electricals, lights, wipers, horn, all working. Cruise control and air cond. not working. The AC compressor had been removed. Heat works great, thermostatically adjustable temperature setting. Rear defroster not working, the element is worn away.  The paint is good for original. The hood has some dents in it. There are some local rust spots and some surface rust above the tailights. The jack points, undercarriage, shock towers are solid. There are no water leaks, smell, mildew  in the cabin. The bottom of the doors have rust. New battery from NAPA.  The rear power windows don't work smoothly. The power lock vacuum has been disabled. Currently using manual locks. All 4 doors and trunk lock and doors close easily. No wind howling at highway speeds. Car starts and shuts off easily. Some minor oil seeping through gaskets. Does not burn oil. Oil and filter changed appx. 2000-3000 miles.  Power plug block heater makes for easy starts in winter. Idle speed knob works correctly. Has full size spare tire, 4 lug wrench and original jack. 3 factory Mercedes keys. Original owners manual and MB parts book. I Have the bottom rear door trim that is not shown on the right side. It needs to refastened to the door.
I have used the car for long trips and is very dependable. My wife used it most of the time. The car was titled in MASS by the previous owner. CT does not title cars of this age. I have a copy of the MASS title. Currently registered and insured.

Race recap: 2015 British Grand Prix is a testament to timing

Mon, Jul 6 2015

In front of his home crowd, Lewis Hamilton actually had to work for pole position at the British Formula One Grand Prix. The World Champion couldn't get on top of the setup for his Mercedes-AMG Petronas on Friday, lapping behind teammate Nico Rosberg and the two Ferraris. Come Saturday, after a few alterations and a whole lot of wing to clamp down on understeer, Hamilton returned to his regular program at the front, taking pole position by just over a tenth of a second from his teammate. Williams, thought to be headed for another stretch in the weeds a few races ago, showed its best strength all year. The Grove team got both cars on the second row and in front of the Ferraris, Felipe Massa qualifying ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas, but they were eight and nine tenths behind the Mercedes'. Kimi Raikkonen out-qualified Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel for the second time this year, and only the first time in a straight-up battle with two healthy cars. But more than a second behind the two cars at the front, and with two nearly-impossible-to-pass Williams' in front, neither the Finn nor the German is happy with where they are. Daniil Kvyat claimed seventh, his side of the garage at Infiniti Red Bull Racing having got through the weekend to that point without a single complaint about their Renault power unit. Carlos Sainz, Jr. put a single Toro Rosso inside the top ten in eighth position, ahead of Nico Hulkenberg who did the same for Sahara Force India by slotting in ninth. The second Infiniti Red Bull driven by Daniel Ricciardo did have an unspecified engine complaint – his car kept "bleeding power" on the straights – but even so he managed to qualify tenth with his second-fastest lap. The stewards deleted his best lap because he ran three centimeters outside the track limits at Copse, an infraction that stung a few other drivers as well. Up in front, what would sting the Mercedes-AMG Petronas drivers the most was the start. That's when a dearth of grip struck both Hamilton and Rosberg, allowing Massa and Bottas to slide right up the middle between them and take the first two places. The leapfrogging was so surprising that it looked like the Mercedes drivers were giving the Williams drivers a head start. They diced through the first corners, Hamilton sliding past Bottas into second place halfway through the lap. And then the safety car reported for duty.

Daimler names Bernd Pischetsrieder to supervisory board

Mon, 14 Apr 2014

Some executives in the automotive industry stay with one company for their entire careers, while others bounce from one to the other, often leaving their indelible mark on each automaker at which they serve. Bob Lutz is certainly an example of the latter. So is Lee Iacocca, having presided over Ford and later charing the Chrysler board. Carlos Tavares was chief operating officer of Renault before being nominated as chief executive at PSA Peugeot Citroën. But as far as the Germans go, nobody's jumped from the leadership of one automaker to the next quite like Bernd Pischetsrieder - especially now that he's been named to the supervisory board of Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler.
An engineer by training, Pischetsrieder started his career at BMW in 1973, eventually rising to the office of CEO after twenty years. There he remained until 1999, only to be dismissed after orchestrating BMW's takeover of the Rover Group (of which only the Mini brand remains in the company's portfolio, the other brands having been sold off after his dismissal).
The next year he was named chairman of Volkswagen's Seat brand, and rose to the chairmanship of the entire Volkswagen Group two years later. Despite a largely successful four-year tenure (that gave birth, incidentally, to the Bugatti Veyron), disagreements with supervisory board chairman Ferdinand Piëch saw him leave the helm at VW AG, focusing his attention on the Scania truck division. He's since been touted as a potential chief executive for Opel and for Continental, but neither potential was apparently realized.

Mercedes-Maybach GLS could become the most expensive car made in America

Mon, Mar 18 2019

Mercedes-Benz International, the German automaker's manufacturing facility near Vance and Tuscaloosa, Ala., already builds the GLS SUV. Autonews reports that the coming ultra-luxe version of the large crossover, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS, will be built in Alabama as well for global markets. The most recent timelines mark the reveal in production or near-production form in China, with sales to commence next year. The next-gen series-production GLS goes on sale later this year. The gilded sub-brand previewed a wild concept last year in China called the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury, which blended the tall profile of an SUV with the truck of a sedan on donk wheels. Based on spy shots, none of that fancy will make it to production. Both the Maybach and AMG versions of the GLS ride on fat rubber but look thoroughly traditional. The treasure will be inside. Autonews said China accounts for roughly 75 percent of Maybach S-Class sedan sales. That suggests the GLS in baroque trim will emphasize chauffeured luxury touches like rear captain's chairs and lots of rear legroom. Pricing estimates figure $200,000 to get in the door. That would put the SUV right in line with the Lamborghini Urus and a couple stacks of Benjamins above the Bentley Bentayga, with much the same likely audience. One analyst said, "The ultra-high-net-worth kids want something different, and these ultraluxury SUVs certainly fit that," while another opined on its "appeal to the Kardashians and hip-hoppers, if they want something slightly different to the G-Wagen." A $200K MSRP would also comfortably make the Maybach GLS the most expensive new car built in America, taking the title from the Acura NSX. With a great price comes great power, said to be a twin-turbo V8 with more than 560 horsepower. The coming GLS 450 will make do with somewhere around 360 hp. The Alabama plant, which also builds the GLE, GLE Coupe, and C-Class, is also undergoing a $1 billion upgrade to more than double the size of the facility, making lines for battery production and EQ-series vehicle assembly,
