1976 Mercedes 300D sedan.  5 cylinder 3 liter non-turbo diesel engine.  4 speed automatic transmission.

This is a cute old car that needs to be restored... I have too many projects and not enough time.  And, it's not a great car for where I live.  It doesn't like hills too much (non turbo engine) and doesn't like cold weather much.  I live at 9,300 feet elevation in Colorado, so you can imagine, I have lots of hills and lots of snow.   It's been a fun summer cruiser, but it needs to go on to someone who will restore it and use it more.

It starts and runs (if it's above 45F or so -- old series glowplugs aren't really up to starting it in colder temps), and drives around.  Transmission is iffy... it doesn't seem to shift very well, though when you get it to stay in the gear you want it in, it'll pull pretty good.  I think it's a control/adjustment issue rather than a bad transmission internals issue... but, just in case, I do have a spare transmission from a 1983 300D that I'll include with it.  Needs a new exhaust system (it fell off just in front of the muffler, so it's a little loud now).  Headlight switch just went out on me this summer (after dark, of course).  Passenger seat and back seat aren't bad... could be reupholstered or cleaned really well, but aren't torn or falling apart.  Drivers seat is shot... needs to be rebuilt with new padding, or replaced.  Glass is good, but the drivers window and passenger rear window don't roll up and down any more.  Other two do.  Tires are brand new (about 300 miles on them) and I just gave it a full fluids change -- new synthetic oil, new tranny fluid, etc.

There is some rust... I took an angle grinder with a wire wheel on it to all the rusty spots and then painted them with rust converter, to keep it from spreading any farther.  It does not appear to be structural (it's been a Colorado car all its life, never been back east where they salt the roads).  But, it does need a bit of bondo work and maybe some steel welded it in a few spots.  I think it's still restorable though.  Obviously, it needs a new paint job (that's what the colored patches are, me trying out some options for colors, I was going to do two tone blue and cream).

The car is currently set up with a veggie oil system -- tank in the trunk for veggie oil, with heaters and lines and all to switch to that when it gets warmed up.  It was installed by a colorado school of mines senior design project, and I still have all the papers from that, including some emmissions and dyno info on running on diesel and veggie oil.  It isn't quite working now, but with their report, you could probably figure it out again.

I live in Ward, Colorado, and could deliver the car to the Boulder area, for pickup, if you don't want to come into the mountains to get it.  I'd even drive it to Denver or Fort Collins area, but driving it farther than that, who knows.... it is an almost 40 year old car, and that's getting old even for a Mercedes.

Audi RS3 Sedan coming to America with over 400 hp?

Wed, Feb 17 2016

The Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG is a fast, competent car. It's significantly sharper than the Audi S3, and it should be, since its starting price is around $7,000 more. Still, getting walloped by the higher-performing CLA45 AMG must irk some people at Audi, we'd think, which might explain why there are rumors that the S3's big brother is coming to town. Yes, reports are popping up from an Audi of America employee that the Audi RS3 would transition from its Euro-market Sportback body style to a more conventional four-door, and that its styling would be updated in the process. Oh, and it'll have a 400-plus-horsepower, 2.5-liter, five-cylinder turbo with which to bash the four-cylinder AMG. The report comes from Quattro World by way of CarScoops, and goes on to claim that Audi hallmarks like Quattro all-wheel drive and a seven-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission will both be present. The new RS3 Sedan would arrive on US shores in 2017 as a 2018 model, with prices starting between $55,000 and $60,000. That should make Mercedes-AMG very nervous – the CLA45 may start around $50,000, but getting it past the $60,000-range is simple (your author was driving a nearly $68,000 CLA45 just last month, for example). Naturally, we have a call in with Audi of America to see if there's any credence to this report. Stay tuned for updates. Related Video:

Boston bombers were tracked using Mercedes mbrace [w/video]

Sun, 28 Apr 2013

We now know Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the two brothers said to be behind the Boston Marathon bombings, planned to head for New York City to detonate more improvised explosive devices. As it turns out, that plan was foiled by the quick thinking of one Mercedes-Benz owner, diligent police work and the Mercedes-Benz mbrace system. When the brothers carjacked a 26-year-old Chinese entrepreneur identified only as "Danny," they didn't realize his Mercedes-Benz M-Class was equipped with the mbrace system, which can call for help in the event of an accident or track the vehicle in the event of a theft.
According to reports, the Tsarnaev brothers held Danny hostage for nearly 90 minutes while they drove around Boston forming a plan until they had to stop for fuel. When one of the brothers went inside to pay, the other put his gun down for a moment. Danny took the opportunity to unlatch his seat belt, open the door and run to another nearby gas station, where he told the owner to call the police.
When police arrived, they used the mbrace system to track the SUV after receiving Danny's permission, and it wasn't long before a shootout between police and the brothers ensued. When it was over, the eldest brother lay dead in the street. For more on the story, view the video report available below.

Mercedes-Benz working on S-Class EV in accelerated green car lineup?

Mon, Mar 10 2014

With Mercedes-Benz bringing out coupe and plug-in hybrid versions of its S-Class sedan, the German automaker just may follow through with a battery-electric variant as well. That's what the company's Uwe Ernstberger told the folks at Top Gear during the Geneva Motor Show. And while he noted the company still needs to work in a larger-than-usual battery pack and was less than specific with details, he did envision an all-electric S-Class "in the future." Of course, rumors started bubbling about an EV S-Class as far back as 2011, so we'll see. Christian Bokich, department manager for product and technology communications for Mercedes-Benz USA, would not confirm anything about an electric S-Class, but he did give AutoblogGreen an official rundown of MB's upcoming green cars in the US, starting with the launch of the all-electric B-Class ED in July of this year in the ZEV states (launch details for other states are TBA, he said). An S-Class plug-in hybrid is coming in the first half of 2015, followed by a C-Class PHEV closer towards the end of that year in the USA. There is also a C-Class four-cylinder BlueTEC coming at some point in 2016. Until we get more concrete information about the possible S-Class EV, let's review what we know about the PHEV. Last September, Mercedes-Benz started showing off the plug-in hybrid S-Class, saying that it could go as far as 19 miles on electric power alone and had a preliminary fuel efficiency rating of more than 78 miles per gallon, using the more lenient European driving cycle. Earlier this week, Mercedes showed off its S-Class Coupe. That model's US version will have a twin-turbocharged V8 that kicks in 449 horsepower, a few more than the presumptive S-Class EV will have. Ernstberger also said Mercedes would join the ranks of automakers offering autonomous driving systems and mentioned the S-Class as being at the "top of the movement." He held his tongue when asked about the possibility of an S-Class cabriolet.
