This amazing car was vandalized on New Years Eve and I have been debating all this time about selling.  I have come to the conclusion that I must.    It is still a great car, but now it will need a front and rear windshield, both the passenger windows, grill, and headlight glass.  The lights themselves are still working. I went out today after she had been sitting covered for 3 months through winter and she started on the 1st try.  I drove her around one last time in the neighborhood. I Love this car and she was my daily driver, but she needs someone who can fix her. Pictures of the glass were taken on the morning after, so the broken glass has been cleaned up.

This is the description & pictures I was going to use before it was vandalized & the after pics as well. The inside was not vandalized so it still looks like the pics. The only damage was to the back right passenger window trim which was dented so it will need to be opened up a bit to allow the glass to move freely.  This car is being sold as is.

This is a Gray Market Mercedes 300D with a manual 4 Speed transmission, non turbo.  Gray Market means it was originally sold in Germany for the European market then imported to the US by an individual. The VIN is WDB1231301A019864 and is currently insured with State Farm. The smaller front and back bumpers are a dead give a way too.  I purchased it from the son of the original owner. His father imported it for his German born wife in 1984 who wanted a “German” car.  I have taken 77 pictures to give you a good idea of the overall condition and it also has some killer BBS rims.  It is in great condition for its age mechanically and the interior is really in great shape. It does leak a little oil and it does have a few rust stops, but crazy fun to drive. Odometer reads 118K, but it has not worked right for about 7 months. Title in hand. All the following electronics work; lights, blinkers, radio, wipers, front driver’s / passenger windows, sunroof, fuel, temp, and oil pressure gauges.  Both back windows are manual and work fine, but the driver side handle needs to be replaced. It works in its current state though.  Heater works like the German’s intended, warm and toasty. All speeds on blower motor work great as do the position settings. Not working; Odometer works from time to time, gauge cluster light, both of these are notorious for going out and are relatively cheap fixes, and the AC. The doors do not lock automatically with the vacuum system, but do work fine with the key. Recent Work done by a Mercedes Mechanic; Clutch Master and Slave cylinder both replaced  New Alternator Brush pack New Alternator belt, power steering belt, and AC belt. Bosch Battery less than 3 months old and very nice BBS Rims. I have done my best to describe in detail the condition of the car, but please feel free to ask questions. It is being sold as is because of its age knowing it will continue to need TLC.

Automakers' sound systems: Crank it, don't yank it

Thu, Jun 21 2018

Years ago, one of the first things most music lovers did after buying a new vehicle was drive to an aftermarket stereo shop to get the crappy stock components swapped for better gear. And you'd typically get not only better sound but also more bang (and boom) for your buck. But in the past decade or so, the overall quality of OEM audio has dramatically increased, while car electronics became more complex, removing the incentive for most new vehicle owners — and all but the most hardcore DIYer — to start from scratch. In 2010, I did a comparison of the average costs for OEM electronics vs. similar offerings from the aftermarket, and back then automakers' stock premium systems were by far the best bargain — and are probably an even better value now. The premium 14-speaker, 1,200-watt JBL system in the all-new 2019 Toyota Avalon is a prime example of this trend. It's standard on the top two Limited and Touring trims and is available as a $680 audio upgrade on the XLE and XSE. I doubt you can even buy 14 speakers and 1,200 watts of amplification from the aftermarket for 700 bucks, much less have it all installed. And because the system is bundled with Toyota's Entune infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and a surround-view camera, removing the head unit means you would likely lose these features. Another advantage of OEMs and their audio partners is they can design the car around the audio system. In the past, automakers would typically place speakers where convenient for packaging, not for optimal sound reproduction, and audio engineers were forced to compromise. But as with the Avalon's premium JBL audio system, this is starting to change. At a recent behind-the-scenes peek for media into the process of developing the system, Toyota and Harman engineers delved into the minutia of sealing the inner panel of the front doors to create an enclosure for 6x8-inch woofers, making space in the pillars for JBL horn tweeters and extensively measuring the acoustic properties of the interior to tune the sound to the space. I'm met some creative and skilled car stereo installers, but none with a degree in psychoacoustics. The system is also the first to feature Quantum Logic Surround that creates a multi-channel listening experience from two-channel sources. And it includes Harman's Clari-Fi processing that "rebuilds key details lost" in compressed audio formats used by streaming music services and MP3s.

Mercedes caught testing stretched E-Class Maybach

Fri, Aug 21 2015

The Mercedes-Maybach S600 won't be the only vehicle to wear the hyphenated name of two of the world's automotive luxury greats. That hulking S-Class will soon be joined by an E-Class variant, which should offer the same touch of subtle luxury as its big brother. At least, that's what we're guessing based on the latest round of spy photos, showing a stretched E-Class with some very telling camouflage. Pay attention, as our spies did, to the rear doors and C-pillar. Like the Maybach S600, the E-Class model features a larger quarter window, although unlike the S, the doors here look to be a bit larger than your usual E550 or E250. Also take note of the heavy tint on those rear windows. It's likely there to obscure whatever sumptuous hides and warm woods Maybach has fitted to the typically business-class interior. While the interior materials are likely to see sweeping changes, expect Mercedes to treat the exterior with a much gentler touch. There'll probably be some unique wheels and C-pillar-mounted Maybach badges, like what we've already seen on the S600. Check out the full round of spy photos up top, and stay tuned for more on the latest Mercedes-Maybach. Related Video:

2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S 4Matic [w/video]

Wed, 20 Feb 2013

Maybe you saw our recent blog snippet on a bunch of US journos getting pulled over in the middle of nowhere in Catalunya, Spain for driving a bunch of new 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG models. By all accounts, they weren't speeding - which makes me softly guffaw. I was there in that group, yet I had taken the more direct route into the mountains from Barcelona so that I could... well, so that I could go faster. No one hassled me and I had the Autovia all to myself. And it was the goodniks - the team players - who got nabbed because Spain had decided to suddenly enforce the never enforced "must carry an international driver's license" clause of the highway code.
The departing E63 AMG with 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque from its M157 5.5-liter biturbo V8 hasn't exactly been poorly received. It isn't as crisp as, nor as pleasantly evil as its C63 AMG kid brother, but we generally accept that the heavier and larger car will always feel, well, heavier and larger.
As part of the 2014 E-Class mid-cycle redesign, Affalterbach decided to give its E63 AMG more power and torque for the occasion. The base car now gives off 550 hp and 531 lb-ft, while the hotter S version I tested (formerly the AMG Performance Pack) produces 577 hp and 590 lb-ft. The other big novelty is that E63 sedans will be available with both rear- and all-wheel drive, while all US-spec E63 wagons will be 4Matic equipped.
