Rare 1986 Mercedes 190 E 2.3-16v on 2040-cars
Bonita Springs, Florida, United States
A great car that has it all! This 5-speed manual is nimble and fun to drive, yet seats 5 with excellent cargo space. A rare car with black leather Recaro seats, MOMO steering wheel and shifter, Cosworth 16-valve cylinder head with mechanical valve lifters, Getrag gearbox (dogleg), self-leveling adjustable height, now-famous multilink rear suspension and first year for catalytic converter. Just over 8,000 of these cars sold in 1985. Maintenance records to 1989; family-owned since 1998. This car has a few flaws for her nearly 30 years on the road, but is still in great shape. Everything works, including the a/c and cruise control. The hood looks like it was repainted at some point and there are a few minor dings. The driver's seat leather is split at the seam but unnoticeable. There is a nick in the wood to the right of the shifter. This car is leisurely driven by a middle-aged gal. Once upon a time, it was owned by her big brother who knew and repaired Mercedes. He passed away a few years ago and the car was kept for sentimental reasons. Over the past 4 years or so, there were new tires, exhaust and exhaust manifold, ignition, clutch (slave and master cylinders), a/c condenser and wiring harness, plug wires, and self-leveling rod. There are also some speaker or stereo wires running from the back seat into the trunk. I think my brother may have been hooking up a CD changer or something. I never removed the wires. Mercedes GLS updates Silver Star seven-seater
Mon, Dec 15 2014It can be bewildering, the staggering array of crossovers and SUVs offered by Mercedes-Benz. There's the G, the GL, the GLK and the GLA, not to mention the new GLE and the ML that basically started it all. So you can forgive yourself if you've never heard of the GLS. After all, it doesn't currently exist. But it will soon. In accordance with Benz's new nomenclature, the GLS-Class will be the replacement for the GL – the largest of the Mercedes utility vehicles and the only one with three rows of seats. Since the current GL was only launched about two and a half years ago, the new nameplate won't be attached to an all-new model just yet. But as you can see from these spy shots, it appears that Mercedes is preparing a facelifted version of the existing model to fit into the new (or at least renamed) lineup. The biggest changes discernible from these spy shots is the revised front end, with new headlights, a more upright grille and a reshaped bumper and hood to go along with it. Around back the changes are more subtle, with reshaped tail lamps, bumper and exhaust pipes. Inside we're expecting a cleaner center console with a new 8-inch touchscreen reportedly inspired by the iPhone. We don't know when, exactly, to expect the revised GLS to arrive on the scene, but given the relatively modest nature of the revisions and how close they look to being ready, we wouldn't expect it to be long now. Whether those minor changes will be enough to keep up with the all-new Audi Q7 just announced, however, is another matter entirely.
Mercedes Alabama ops ordered to allow workers to discuss unionization
Wed, Dec 3 2014A decision last week by the National Labor Relations Board has bolstered the efforts of the United Auto Workers at Mercedes-Benz's Tuscaloosa, AL factory, as the union continues its attempts to represent the factory's workers. According to Reuters, the NLRB ruled that Mercedes-Benz US International, the proper name of the company behind the Tuscaloosa factory, can no longer prevent workers from discussing unionization in work areas while off the clock. While MBUSI maintains that it's not taking a side on unionization and that it wants the "the decision left to our team members," the UAW is still arguing that the US facility should take the same position on unions that the rest the world's Mercedes-Benz plants take and. Speaking to Reuters, the UAW says that stance "acknowledges the human right to form trade unions" and "respects the right of collective bargaining." According to Reuters, the Alabama factory employs 3,500 workers – 2,500 full time and 1,000 "temporary" – and is the only Daimler-owned factory on the planet not to offer employees the opportunity for representation. Presently, the Tuscaloosa facility assembles Mercedes' C-Class, GL-Class and M-Class vehicles.
Jalopnik and Consumer Reports see who can pull off the best snow drift
Fri, Feb 20 2015The weather throughout much of the United States is pretty awful at the moment with some combination of extremely low temperatures, inches of snow and maybe some ice underneath it all. The folks at Jalopnik and Consumer Reports are making the absolute best out of a difficult situation by heading to CR's snow-covered test track and attempting to make the longest drift in a quartet of very different performance vehicles. Jalopnik brought along a Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S Wagon, a Subaru WRX STI, a BMW 228i and a 1973 Volkswagen Baja Bug (heck yeah!) for the challenge. Also, the track was perfect for this group, with a mix of packed snow in places and still a few inches of unsullied powder in spots too. Ostensibly the goal was to get the tail to step out through a particular corner, but in reality this was more about having hilarious fun in the snow with fast cars. The result just looks like the best time humanly possible in this weather.
