1989 Diesel Mercedes Benz 190d W201 2.5 on 2040-cars
Melbourne, Florida, United States
Offered for sale is our 1989 Mercedes 190D. These cars are known for their great fuel economy and of course the reliable 5-cylinder diesel engine. These cars are rarely seen for sale and are even harder to find in this nice condition. Condition The good- There is no rust. Everything works, including the cruise control, AC, electric sunroof and windows as well as the original Becker Radio. It starts easy and runs well. It hums perfectly at 75 mph on the interstate. It shifts smoothly and stops quickly. I would not hesitate to drive it anywhere. It is a small and economical car. The bad- It is almost 24 years old. It has minor wear and is neither new nor a perfect show car. It is a clean well-preserved German masterpiece but has a few nicks rubs and dings, both inside and out from 2 decades of use. The outside air temperature is very difficult to read in most lights. Everything is working right now, but it is not a new car. It is a small and economical car, (I am 6’3 and nobody wants to sit behind me in it) HistoryI was told that the original owners summered in Rhode Island and stored the car when they traveled to Utah for the remainder of the year. I was also told that the car was always stored in a climate-controlled garage and never saw snowy or salted roads. The rust free condition of the car would support this. Their middle age nephew inherited the vehicle and had it for a short time in upstate New York. We purchased it from him 2 years ago and drove it to Florida. This car has been an extra car for us, used mostly for occasional trips of an hour or more. Since my wife has often driven the car while I am away for work, I have been exceedingly careful about keeping it in excellent mechanical condition. It has been maintained by the local Mercedes specialist. The car had little recent use before we brought it to Florida and needed some work. We had the front end aligned, installed new ball joints, spindles and a battery. We repaired 2 of the electric window regulators, replaced the worn out speakers and rebuilt the Hirschman electric antenna. We installed new glow plugs and relay. Of course we did new fuel and oil filters and brakes. Last year we replaced the alternator and tinkered with a shifting issue. Shortly after that the transmission filled with engine coolant. A leak in the radiator had allowed coolant to enter via the transmission cooler line. A testament to the durability of these cars; the transmission did not fail, even though we drove it for months with the shifting issue. Our Mercedes specialist installed a new radiator and lines and rebuilt the transmission. The new transmission is one of the strongest features of this car; it shifts so strong and steady. This summer, in anticipation of several trips, we had new seals installed on the injector pump and the Air Conditioning system was overhauled to include a new Denzo compressor. The Air is Ice Cold! We have recently driven the car on several trips of 4-5 hours each way. The car is comfortable and reliable. The car has 4 new Pirelli all-season tires for its trip to a new home.

Red Bull may seek engines from Ferrari after Mercedes snub
Thu, Sep 10 2015Red Bull and Renault's fractured relationship is pushing the Austrian F1 team to find a new engine provider. But after a trip across the German border to chat with Mercedes-Benz proved fruitless, the team is apparently set to head across its home country's southern border, and into Italy. Yep, Red Bull Ferrari could be a thing next season. According to RBR boss Christian Horner, the company is just doing "necessary due diligence" in contacting other engine suppliers, although he's willfully admitted to Germany's Bild newspaper that the "idea of Mercedes is finished," BBC Sport reports. It wasn't so much that Mercedes and Red Bull couldn't come to financial agreement – Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz views throwing money into F1 in much the same way you or I toss pennies into the mall fountain – but rather that the Germans had no interest in supplying the best engines on the grid to the factory team's perennial rival. BBC Sport seems to think that fact, along with what the outlet calls Red Bull's "antagonistic" relationship with engine suppliers, killed the Mercedes deal. Honda and RBR aren't likely to happen either, thanks to McLaren (not that we think Red Bull would approach the Japanese, which have struggled mightily all season long). By process of elimination, that just leaves Ferrari. Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Maurizio Arrivabene confirmed that his team can accommodate Red Bull's engine needs, and that he wasn't concerned with the idea of a Ferrari engine in an Adrian Newey-designed body. "In theory they have big names, with Newey as chief designer and it is easy to think that if you give them the engine they will build a scary chassis, which means they will be really competitive," Arrivabene told BBC Sport. "Concerning my team, my engineers and aerodynamicists know their own jobs. For that reason I don't have a problem, and competition is nice when you have a stronger competitor." "This doesn't mean tomorrow morning we will give our engines to Red Bull or Toro Rosso," Arrivabene added. And it's that statement we'd suggest remembering. There are, after all, still seven races left in the 2015 season, which is quite a lot of time for new and different developments within the sport's notoriously gruesome political process. In other words, don't count on an announcement from any team or manufacturer for at least a few more races. Related Video:
Aston wants to build DBX on its new platform, not Mercedes'
Mon, May 18 2015Aston Martin is proceeding with plans to launch the DBX as its first production crossover. It just can't say at this point what it will be based on. Speaking with Automotive News Europe, Aston's new CEO Andy Palmer indicated that basing the DBX on a Mercedes SUV platform would not be its first choice because they "clearly sit in a very different space to the one we want to go" with the DBX. Instead, the company's first choice would be to build the crossover atop the new platform it's developing for its sports cars. "It just depends how high off the ground it could go," said Palmer. "I don't exclude the possibility of using some [Mercedes] parts, but I would say very much the primary route is our platform." The prospect of building an Aston SUV on Mercedes architecture – namely that of the GL-Class – has been on the table for some time now. The Lagonda SUV concept it showcased at the Geneva show in 2009 was based on the GL, and the two automakers have been forging a tightening alliance in the years since. The British automaker's next-generation engine is to be built by Mercedes-AMG, and it is expected to source other components from the German automaker as well. For its part, Mercedes has been taking a sportier approach with its latest crossovers, as demonstrated by the GLE Coupe that debuted before the more conventional version and the Concept GLC Coupe that previewed the GLK's replacement in Shanghai last month. Aston Martin, on the other hand, is building a new sports car platform that will underpin its next generation of luxury GTs, replacing the long-serving VH architecture that has served for decades as the basis for its entire model line. Perhaps the most surprising of ANE's report, though, is that Aston seems to be proceeding with plans to build the DBX apparently without even knowing what platform it will use.
2017 Infiniti QX30 First Drive
Mon, Jul 18 2016If you've heard anything before about this car, the 2017 Infiniti QX30, it probably has to do with its corporate parents, an odd couple if there ever was one. Renault-Nissan, Infiniti's corporate overlords, inked a deal with Mercedes-Benz to share some mechanical components and platforms. That deal put a new, very modern 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four under the hood of the Q50 and was the genesis of what you're looking at here. What are you looking at here? We drove this car in 2015, when it was called a Q30 – originally it was going to be the lower-riding counterpart to the slightly jacked-up QX30. Then Infiniti decided it'd make more sense to sell all variants of this vehicle as CUVs in the US, so we have three slightly different flavors of the QX30 instead. There's the normal version; the Sport, which is 0.6 inches lower; and the AWD, which is 1.2 inches higher. Infiniti brought us to Seattle to sample the Sport and AWD flavors on a semi-circumnavigation of the Puget Sound. It didn't rain a drop, thanks for asking, and instead was sunny and mild the whole time. It's easy to make the QX30 sound more confusing than it actually is. This is essentially a Mercedes-Benz GLA250 with full exterior styling and partial interior design by Infiniti, built in the UK alongside several other Nissans. The powertrain and chassis, including the optional AWD system, were all "co-developed" with partner Daimler, with final calibration and tuning by Infiniti engineers. Here's another way of explaining it: Infiniti needs an entry-level car to appeal to new premium car shoppers, and the QX30 is the prescription. It's a hatchback that's been given the mildest of CUV treatments and a lot of marketing descriptors. That's because hatchbacks are sales death in America. In Europe, they'll see right through the CUV posturing and realize it's just a hatchback offered in three different suspension heights. Whatever you call it to make it palatable to Americans, it's a useful little vehicle. This car is mechanically identical to the Q30, so there are some things we can gloss over. Both are powered by a transverse-mounted 2.0-liter Mercedes inline-four. It's a turbocharged, direct-injection gasoline engine, and it sure feels like one. It sounds like a rock tumbler full of nickels and runs out of breath at about 5,000 rpm. All versions make 208 hp at 5,500 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque between 1,200 and 4,400 rpm – more than adequate but less than thrilling.
