Diesel Benz 190 2.5 Liter Turbo on 2040-cars

To quote Wikipedia, "The 2.5 Turbo, while sold in mainland Europe, but not the UK for many years, was available to American buyers only in 1987 and is now somewhat of a collectors item."

This auction is for that very car, a 1987 190D 2.5 turbo.  I'll start by saying that this might be the best car I'll ever own; I'm going to miss it but am hopeful it will go to an appreciative buyer.  I drove the car from November 2007 until January 2013, in which time I put around 120,000 miles on it.  While it is far from perfect, I'd say it might be in the best shape of any MB from that era that was driven in New England for over 25 winters.

Let's start with the Pros
  • engine, drivetrain in perfect working order; never any issues
  • the interior is nearly immaculate, carpet in great shape, no tears in upholstery, comes with custom fit honeycomb rubber floor mats
  • factory installed Recaro seats with horsehair padding (most comfortable seats I've ever sat in); no rips or tears in any of the upholstery
  • Sony CD player with 1/8" stereo AUX input jack (factory Becker cassette deck included)
  • modifications that i made to the center console include the addition of 3 power outlets and a storage bin above the CD player; all original parts are included and can easily be re-installed; i made no permanent changes to the car
  • all four paper speakers replaced with Audiobahn speakers; again, original speakers included
  • ALL electronics and vacuum operated accessories work perfectly; except AC (we'll get to that in the Cons)
  • all four shocks replaced in summer 2012, less than 1,000 miles on them
  • ball joints replaced in fall 2011
  • front springs replaced in summer 2012
  • all four rotors replaced in 2011 along with pads
  • new control arm bushings in 2012
  • all four factory alloy wheels included, plus the full size spare on matching alloy wheel (5 matching alloy wheels in total!)
  • like new snow tires included as well (car drove like a tank in the snow with these tires and some weight in the trunk)
  • summer tires are only a couple years old; i'm pretty sure they only saw one season
  • hardly any rust on exterior!  like any car driven around here, rust is a problem and this car was no exception.  i repaired quite a bit or rot around the jack points near each fender and repainted in factory Sato grey with textured undercoating.  Doors had a bit of rust too but i did the same with that and repainted with factory Astral Silver paint
  • all original glass with the exception of the front passenger window; car was broken into in 2008
  • sun roof works perfectly
  • has front fog lights
  • has an interstate battery that i bought in 2011; should have plenty of life in it
now the Cons
  • perhaps the biggest Con: the AC does not work.  Numerous components have been replaced, including the compressor, but it still does not work consistently.  Most likely it would need to be brought to a dealership.  I had been bringing this car to my personal mechanic who has worked solely on MB's for the past 30 years but is not the greatest when it comes to electrical
  • hood, rear passenger side door, and front driver side fender were replaced.  the door was replaced because the car had been in an accident before i owned it and was poorly repaired with bondo.  the hood and fender were replaced from a collision with a deer in 2010.  the driver's side headlight assembly was also replaced at that time.  THIS WAS THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE.  All replacement parts were repainted with MB Astral Silver and clear coat
  • since some parts were repainted, the exterior doesn't match perfectly; i'd say it's nearly a 90 - 95% match.  some days it's hardly noticeable.  my guess is that this is because i only painted the replacement parts and not the rest of the car and the original paint on there is much older and has seen a lot more sun.  if i was still driving the car, i would've repainted the whole thing
  • since i had been planning to repaint the whole car, i removed the black stripe decal that runs along each side; i do have a replacement roll which was made to factory specs that i never put on since i was hoping to repaint the car
  • vacuum system works perfectly as i mentioned above, however it has its quirks;  i'd be happy to go into detail on this if you'd like to know; just ask

that about sums it up, if you have any questions on anything don't hesitate to ask.  i'll truly miss this car but my fiance refused to ride in it another summer without AC.

good luck

2015 Monaco F1 Grand Prix race recap [spoilers]

Mon, May 25 2015

Lewis Hamilton came to Monaco with a new three-year deal with Mercedes-AMG Petronas and a vow to not let anything, including any "mistakes" by teammate Nico Rosberg, stand in the way of his best qualifying effort. Mercedes reportedly made it rain with a 100-million-pound deal, and Hamilton made it rain right back with his first pole position at Monaco. Rosberg did make a mistake but this time it was behind Hamilton, which meant he stuffed-up the qualifying attempts of rival drivers like Sebastian Vettel. So Rosberg starts second, 0.342 behind Hamilton but 0.449 ahead of Vettel in the Ferrari. Daniel Ricciardo thinks he should have been third, but a communication error with his engineers left him in the wrong engine setting for his final hot lap, so by the very first corner he'd lost the time he would have needed to get higher than fourth on the grid. The second Infiniti Red Bull Racing of Daniil Kvyat slots in behind him, ahead of the second Ferrari of Kimi "Not A Very Happy Day" Raikkonen, who just can't get it going lately. Sergio Perez did for the Sahara Force India what the car can't do on its own, which is grab a top-ten qualifying spot. Toro Rosso rookie Carlos Sainz had qualified eighth but missed a call to the weigh bridge, so he's been slapped into the pit lane. Pastor Maldonado in the Lotus inherits his eighth place, ahead of rookie Max Verstappen in the second Toro Rosso, and Jenson Button in the McLaren. Button only got up there because of two penalties: for Sainz, and Romain Grosjean who had qualified 11th but took a penalty for a gearbox change. Want to know how hard it is to do better on race day than in qualifying at Monaco? Even the never-say-die Fernando Alonso said, "Monte Carlo is a train of cars on Sunday, the race finishes on Saturday afternoon." Well obviously, he didn't take Max Verstappen's seek-and-destroy tactics into account. The young Dutchman had made passing look like a real option in Monaco, getting past Maldonado at St. Devote on Lap 7 after a bit of argy-bargy on Lap 6, then taking advantage of blue flags to slink past teammate Carlos Sainz and Williams driver Valtteri Bottas while hiding in Sebastian Vettel's slipstream. He tried the same move on Romain Grosjean on Lap 65, but Grosjean locked him out. Verstappen lined up the Lotus driver over the following laps, then looked like he slipped to the inside at St.

Gullwing America turns SLS AMG Roadster into stunning 1955 300 SC redux

Thu, 14 Feb 2013

Gullwing America specializes in what it calls "retro styling meets modern technology." It's next demonstration of that is the convertible above, a stylized recreation of the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SC (inset) supported by the structure of a 2012 SLS AMG Roadster. Commissioned by a client in Eastern Europe, the resulting car is called the 300 SLC.
The hand-formed aluminum bodywork required just a few changes to the SLS AMG Roadster, namely reworking the headlights into a stacked arrangement of LEDs and relocating the pop-up spoiler behind the cabin. The retro grille and long, straight hood evoke the past, the custom exhaust, height-adjustable suspension, 21-inch wheels up front and 22-inch wheels in back, however, stray a little further from history. The 300 SLC will come with a hardtop and be one-of-a-kind, making it even rarer than its inspiration, of which 92 were made.
If you have any more questions, they can probably be answered in the high-res photo gallery above and press release below.
