1956 Mercedes 190SL
Since I bought it twelve years ago, it has been meticulously maintained by Sehmi Motors in Los Angeles, which specializes in classic MB's. They have the maintenance history and can answer any additional questions about the car. She starts every time, and runs and drives beautifully. The transmission is incredibly smooth, it handles like a dream and sounds incredible even when idling!
During my 12 years of light use, It has been meticulously maintained by my restorer, and he has performed the following work:
It was in fantastic shape when I bought it, but nonetheless, I had my restorer do the following as soon as it arrived in Los Angeles:
* Rewired starter button (it had been by-passed)
* Replaced king pins and bushings
* Replaced tie rod end assembly
* New gaskets
* New windshield
* Replaced door seals and window channels
* Replaced the clock with an original "winder" from a 1956 190
* Re-mounted the carburetor
During my 12 years of light use, It has been meticulously maintained by my restorer, and he has performed the following work:
* Replaced ignition points
* Generator
* Voltage regulator
* Updated hoses
* Updated wiring and wiring harness
* Updated emergency brake lever mechanism
* 4 new tires (they have a few thousand miles on them, but appear like new.)
There's very little wrong with the car that I'm aware of, except the door locks may not work reliably (I never keep the top up, so I never thought about fixing them.) Also, there are a few small cosmetic imperfections, but frankly they're not easy to spot.
I've collected classic cars for 20 years, and the Mercedes 190SL is my absolute favorite! If you've never been around an early 190SL you will be stunned at it's simple beauty and elegance. The only real hassle in driving it, is answering questions at every stoplight! I'm selling this and another classic MB convertible because sadly my doctor doesn't allow me in the sun anymore. But I would love for someone else to enjoy it now that summer is here!

In the wintery wilds of northern Alaska, even the cute little critters want to kill you.
As I am about to nod off on my long leg flight from Minneapolis to Anchorage ahead of driving to the Arctic Circle, the friendly twenty-something Alaskan knitting furiously in the seat next to me pauses and says, "When you're driving up there, don't open your windows." In the dead of winter? I hadn't planned on cruising alfresco, but her warning to keep the glazing snugged against the weatherstripping is one I would take to heart. She continues: "If you leave 'em open, a fox is liable to jump right in. There are lots of rabid foxes up there, and they leap into your car and just Go. To. Town." And here I was, thinking that a curious bear or maybe an ill-placed moose in the road was going to be my biggest potential four-legged threat. In the wintery wilds of northern Alaska, even the cute little critters want to kill you.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class named 2015 World Car of the Year
Thu, Apr 2 2015It's been a good morning for Mercedes-Benz, with three of the company's wares taking home awards today at the New York Auto Show. The 2015 World Car of the Year awards have just been announced, and the charming new C-Class sedan has taken top honors, beating both the new Volkswagen Passat and Ford Mustang. But Car of the Year isn't the only award Mercedes received this morning. Here are the other World Car announcements, where M-B was honored two more times. World Performance Car of the Year: Mercedes-AMG GT World Luxury Car of the Year: Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe World Green Car of the Year: BMW i8 World Car Design of the Year: Citroen C4 Cactus Congratulations, all around, to this fantastic group of cars.
Maybach lost upwards of $500k on each vehicle sold
Wed, 08 Feb 2012Daimler is shuttering Maybach in 2013 after seven years of production. In that time, the company's ultra-ultra-luxury arm managed to sell just 3,000 units, and CAR reports Daimler lost somewhere around $500,000 on each and every one of them.
Even with a ludicrous price tag of over $370,000 for an "entry" Maybach 57, the brand couldn't quite recoup the dizzying $1.33 billion Daimler poured into it since its (re)inception. Rumors ignited over a possible tie up with Aston Martin that would have resulted in a range of new and attractive models, but Daimler has instead decided to snuff out Maybach altogether.
We can hardly blame them.
