1990 Gtus - Built With The Best - 185whp - Gorgeous on 2040-cars
Denton, Texas, United States
The most special of all second generation RX-7's: the 1990 GTUs. And this is a very fine one! Civilized enough to be driven daily, fine enough to show, aggressive enough to track. I built it to be as Mazda intended it, but a bit 'more so'. It has been a Southern car its whole life, no rust, and garaged for the majority of its life as well. Rotary Resurrection and Rotary Performance (Kevin Landers and Chris Ott) built and tuned the engine – some of the best in the business. Fly into Dallas and drive it home without qualms. First owner: little old lady in Florida who thought it was cute and never revved it past 4k. No lie! Second owner: well-respected RX7 forum member who bought it with a motor full of carbon, rebuilt it and auto-x’d it on occasion. He bought many of the aftermarket parts and had the original engine rebuilt in 2003 by Rotary Resurrection. I am the third owner, purchased May 2008. I have the original window sticker, a full Factory Service Manual, and plenty of records for it. Details Engine Exhaust Suspension Cooling Brakes Trans Fluids & Belts Electronics Interior -Corbeau A4 seats, minor wear Exterior -LOUD compressor-driven air horn hidden inside front bumper Quibbles The drive It gets going quickly with the 4.3 ratio rear end (GTUs specific) and light flywheel. The combination of good torque, RB steel flywheel, and dual-friction clutch means it’s easy to pussycat around town. The clutch grabs harder the higher the RPM’s, which is very entertaining for performance driving. The tires are a good match for the car, grippy and responsive without being rock-hard riding or too soft. Sounds amazing, angry hornet! It is stable and builds speed very quickly up to 125mph or so, at which point it starts to taper off. I’ve never wound it out. Torquey enough to ebb and flow with traffic without having to row the gearbox. The ride and handling balance is sublime. I spent years replacing and adjusting components to get a balanced, responsive ride which is sporty but not harsh. The Illumina/RB and RE Aremania combination is an excellent match: they have similar damping characteristics, and can be adjusted from cruiser-soft to auto-X firm. The Manual steering & careful alignment setup make the handling amazing. I went through 3 steering setups to find this one. It provides unparalleled road feedback with an excellent, not to fast, not too slow ratio. It is reasonably calm on the highway yet still has that 'tingle' that let's you know exactly what the car is up to. On the track, whether tight auto-X or fast road course, it is your best friend. Brakes are solid and the hotter they get the better. The HP+ pads do not have strong initial bite; they are smooth when cold, and when warmed up, Whoa nelly. They are easy to modulate and very strong. The car is fully sorted and phenomenally reliable. It has handled a dozen or so auto-x and track days without issue, chasing down much faster cars with aplomb, limited by the component behind the wheel. It's a lot of fun to fill the rear-view mirror of a Mustang or even a Corvette... in a 1300cc 24yr old RX7. It is very balanced around corners, driven by the wheel and the right pedal. Removing the weight really woke up the front of the car. Mass feels very centralized, I have not been in a more responsive, willing-to-rotate car aside from mid-engine cars from Porsche and Lotus. The car actually gets very good mileage, mid 20’s on the highway, upper teens to low 20's mixed. 87 octane. You probably never knew how much fun a quick naturally aspirated RX7 could be! The recent rebuild was done right: every component was inspected, throwout and pilot bearings replaced, etc etc etc. Throughout my ownership, I premix 1/2 oz/gal premium oil, with OMP operational as well. During the rebuild, with about 20k on the hard parts, everything was well in spec and able to be re-used. New motor built instant compression and at 185whp on a conservative tune, it is very stout. Car will come with original speed-sensitive PS and AC components if the new owner would like to convert back to stock. I waited 2+ years for this to come up, spent the last 5 years fully building and sorting it out, and will be happy to keep it if the right buyer does not materialize. TERMS

Weekly Recap: Mazda's rotary revival ignites Tokyo Motor Show
Sat, Oct 31 2015Forty-eight years ago Mazda pioneered rotary engines in the Cosmo Sport. Mazda then honed the technology, won with it on the racetrack, and made it one of its signature features. If you're an enthusiast, rotary was a reason you like Mazda. It's a great part of the company's past. But until this week, that's exactly what we thought it was. History. That all changed with the reveal of the RX-Vision concept at the Tokyo Motor Show, which reignited the passions of the Mazda faithful. Suddenly, rotary was no longer a relic. The rotary concept shown in Japan was a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car wrapped in the company's latest Kodo design language. It's powered by a Skyactiv-R unit (R for rotary), though specs were not disclosed. Mass production is "currently on hold," Mazda said, maintaining it never stopped development of rotary technology, even after the demise of the RX-8. Beyond that, we know nothing, other than the optimistic statement Mazda offered that: the "RX-Vision represents a vision of the future that Mazda hopes to one day make into reality." Put simply: we agree. OTHER NEWS & NOTES: Subaru previews next-gen Impreza While the Mazda concept was the headliner from Tokyo, Subaru's Impreza design study also stood out. The five-door concept is a signpost for the look of next-generation Impreza. It blends sportiness with functionality, and it's wrapped in a striking shade of 'high-luminance silver.' The fenders are flared to signal Subaru's all-wheel-drive capability, and the front has futuristic headlights that look like something from an Audi E-Tron concept. While most of this will be toned down in production, the concept suggests an elevated style for the Impreza, which is due as a 2017 model. Porsche adds potent GTS model to 2017 Macan line Porsche is giving the Macan crossover the GTS treatment, which will start at $68,195 when it goes on sale in March. GTS translates to more power, a sportier suspension, and interior and exterior design cues that sharpen the looks and reflexes of one of the most athletic SUVs on the market. Porsche recalibrated the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 from the Macan S to make 360 hp and 369 lb-ft, (up from 340 hp and 339 lb-ft in the S). It teams with a seven-speed PDK gearbox and all-wheel drive. An air suspension is standard. The body features a slew of black accents, and the standard 20-inch RS Spyder wheels are done up in a shade of satin black. The cabin gets leather, Alcantara, and GTS logos.
Mazda Raceway gets first new MX-5 Cup as pace car
Sun, Aug 16 2015Mazda's motorsports department officially finished the first example of its new MX-5 Cup racer. But while the rest of the fleet will be used in the Global MX-5 Cup championship, this initial unit has been designated for another purpose. It's been dedicated to serve as the new pace car for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Based on the latest ND-generation MX-5, the Cup racer was previewed in racing spec this past November ahead of its debut at the SEMA show. Though we've still yet to see the final spec sheet, it clearly benefits from key upgrades to the rolling stock, not to mention the added roll cage, racing buckets, and more. The pace car also features emergency lighting and a livery designed by Mazda and applied by Sticky Fingers Design out of Huntington Beach, CA. The beefed-up little roadster will join a cadre of pace cars used at the legendary Northern California circuit. Other pace cars in the fleet include a Mazda6, RX-8, CX-5, and the previous Miata. The season is winding to a close at Laguna Seca, with the Pirelli World Challenge finale and Mazda Road to Indy still set to take to the track next month. (August 13, 2015) – Mazda Motorsports used the annual car-fest known as the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion to roll out the first production 2016 Mazda MX-5 Cup race car. This particular vehicle is guaranteed to lead races as it will be the newest pace car in the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca fleet of Mazda safety vehicles. The 2016 Mazda MX-5 Cup race car follows a 26-year history of the MX-5 Miata in motorsports. The first race cars to be sold to customers will be used in the 2016 Global MX-5 Cup, known in the U.S. as the Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup. With the 2016 racing season still many months away, placing the first production race car into pace car duty allows Mazda to gather additional durability data while showcasing it in front of one of the most influential motorsports crowds of the year. "For Mazda, this weekend is the perfect blend of past, present, and future," noted John Doonan, director of motorsports for Mazda North American Operations. "We are celebrating our motorsports heritage on the track with our vintage race cars.
