1990 Pre-Production Mazda Miata "Barn Find" (actually a storage unit find). Manufactured March, 1989.  According to internet sources VIN 00090 was the first Miata available for retail sale.  This makes VIN 00013-00089 Pre-Production cars (the first 12 were crushed).

I am a Miata owner since 1990 and have several Miata's in my collection. If you desire a Miata collection there are a few must haves; 1991 BRG, a 1992 yellow, a 1993 SE, and a pre-production 1990.  While there are 4000 BRGs and 1500 Yellows there are only 77 pre-production 1990 Miata's!  If you have read this far then you are interested in it for the serial number and future collectability and not as a daily driver (there are 500,000 other Miatas to buy for daily driving)

00064 first sold in Colorado but lived most of it's life in New Mexico and North Carolina. It was driven daily by the previous owners and now sports 145k miles. I have gone over this car top to bottom - documenting several assembly line paint pen marks and unusual fasteners that mke it different from later Production cars.   It runs and drives great and is nearly 100% original including the smooth case diff!  The one major item I have noticed is the core support, hood and front bumper cover are not original apparently due to an accident early in its life. Otherwise it is rust free in all the usual spots (quarters, trunk floor and floor pans) but it does have some very minor surface rust on the front fenders that will need to be taken care of when repainted.  The white paint is peeling in spots (like all white 1990-1992 Miata's do - Mazda had a TSB to for a repaint through 1992) so a repaint is in order for this collectible and should not detract from any collectible value.

Shocks are dated Feb 1989, Wheels and center caps are dated Mar 1989. I inspected under the carpet for a build sheet but one was not there.  I do have the Mazda Service history pulled from their database and includes the original owners name.

This is what a 1,200-hp twin-turbo 4-rotor looks like in a Miata

Fri, Dec 12 2014

We've seen the diminutive Mazda MX-5 Miata swallow plenty of big engines, but New Zealand drifting ace "Mad Mike" Whiddett is roaring into where-no-man-has-gone-before territory. Wanting to replace his 515-horsepower "MADBUL" RX-7 and its twin-turbocharged, three-rotor 20B engine, his new ride is an NC-series Miata with four rotors and twin Garrett turbochargers courtesy of Pulse Performance Race Engineering. It is called "RADBUL," and expected power at standard boost is 1,200 hp, but the builders at Pulse Performance think it will get up to 1,500 hp at full boost. And yes, that exhaust exits through the hood. Four-rotor engines are actually popular - builds are detailed on forums like this one from 2007 and this one from 2008, this UK company or this Canadian company will sell you one complete - but they're usually being prepped for an RX-7. Mad Mike's choice of a Miata for this enterprise makes this about as extreme as you can get, short of throwing it into a Mazda R360. You can watch Mad Mike tell the story of the build in the video, and check out the first and second installments about the build on the Red Bull site.

Mazda revamping dealers with 'Retail Evolution'

Sun, Aug 30 2015

Mazda introduced its Retail Revolution dealership design language 12 years ago, which focused on open-plan spaces, multimedia areas, and allowing customers to interact with the brand before needing to interact with a salesperson. Two years ago the carmaker started work on the next step in its dealership design, and the new language, called Retail Evolution, was unveiled at Mazda of Everett in Seattle, Washington. Aiming to make the Mazda brand feel more premium and increase dealer profits, it goes even further on the open-plan to create "a new level of business transparency." It's all done with a lot of black, white, raw wood, metal finishes, and a lot of glass. Mazda Lounges will offer free wi-fi, and digital displays will replace static photographs. So as not to hurt showrooms still recouping their investment in Retail Revolution, Mazda will work with dealers to figure out how best to update facilities, and the Retail Evolution has three tiers that can be adapted to particular locations. The press release is below, a couple of renderings are above. MAZDA ANNOUNCES ALL-NEW RETAIL EVOLUTION DEALERSHIP DESIGN Mazda of Everett Showcases First Ground-Up Retail Evolution Design IRVINE, Calif. (August 27, 2015) – Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today announced its all-new dealership design, dubbed "Retail Evolution", featuring an open concept floorplan that offers a new level of business transparency, and a look and feel enhanced through the use of natural materials that results in an even more upscale decor than the company's current popular Retail Revolution design. The first Retail Evolution dealership built from the ground up to this exacting standard will be Mazda of Everett in Seattle, Wash., opening today. "Thanks to our KODO design philosophy and suite of SKYACTIV technologies, our vehicle lineup has never been stronger. We are now able to take that groundbreaking design language and translate it into our dealership experience," said Jim O'Sullivan, president & CEO, MNAO. "Retail Evolution embodies the spirit and direction of the Mazda brand, while offering an upscale experience our customers expect and deserve." Clad in premium black, clean white, and featuring new chrome Mazda signage, the new Retail Evolution Mazda dealerships will provide dealers with strong curb appeal. New materials throughout the building give dealers an upscale look and feel with warm raw-material tones of wood and metal in the showroom.

Are you the 2016 Mazda Miata?

Mon, 11 Aug 2014

Tech nerds are spoiled. Every year, there's a new iPhone that arrives following months and months of breathless speculation and rumormongering. We car folk have a more difficult life, because vehicles with the iPhone's cult-like devotion and following, while plentiful, only receive hefty updates after several years. Case in point, the Mazda MX-5.
There's a new one coming, and much like the iPhone 6, it'll arrive in just a few weeks. So, in lockstep with the tech folk, we're anxiously biding our time and waiting with baited breath for the expected debut date of September 3. Also, like Apple fanboys, we're clamoring over any hint or teaser as to what the next-gen Miata will bring, which is why we're showing you the above image.
That is, allegedly, the new MX-5 hiding under the sheet. Auto Motor und Sport has the image, which according to World Car Fans was released by Mazda. Of course, we've reached out to the Zoom-Zoom brand for verification of its authenticity, and will be sure to update as soon as we hear back.
