I'll start with the bad news:

Engine spun a rod bearing and threw a rod.  Will need a new block and lower end rebuild.

Now the good stuff:

This car was built by Flyin' Miata in Grand Juction Colorado in 2004.  A brand new crate motor 1.8 was installed along with a FM2 turbo system.  The system is tunable via a Link computer and keypad.  250hp with 12lbs of boost.  Flyin Miata also installed their FM kevlar clutch at this time and an upgraded radiator and fan kit.   They also went through the suspension and installed Tokico 5 way adjustable shocks, FM sport coil springs, FM sway bars, FM strut tower brace and rear brace.  It has an FM exhaust too. I have receipts for everything that has been done.  Thousands invested.  Turbo kit says "dealer alternative" that is the company Flyin Miata started out as before changing names.  Wheels are ASA by BBS 15".  Tires are Kumhos with excellent tread.  Rotors are cross drilled and pads are newer.   It has a Hard Dog roll bar and a brand new convertible top.

This is a lifelong Colorado car that only spent a few months on the road in MI.  It has absolutely no rust!!.  There are a few little dings and it has never been in an accident.  The dings are pictured: one in the drivers door like the size of a nickel, one on the drivers rear fender lip, a few on the passenger rear quarter that were made from the inside out when someone did a careless job of replacing a battery, one scuff in the right front of the front bumper cover and a crack in the right front turn signal lens.  But THAT"S IT.  Otherwise the body is perfect.  Glass is all perfect too.

Clean CO title.

In addition it has a really nice sound system.  A Rockford Fosgate amp custom mounted in the trunk, 2 8 inch kicker solobaric subs in a custom built inclosure in the roll bar/behind seats area, component speakers in the doors and a nice Sony head unit with aux input.

The engine lost oil pressure for some reason and threw a rod.  The motor only had 25,000 miles on it at that point.

I bought the car as it sits.  I was looking for a MIata to build into a Rally Cross car when I bought this.  I now realize that I really don't want or need a turbo car for this project and I definitely don't need a car with a body as nice as this one so I am passing it on to someone who can return it to what it was a really well built strew/ track car build by a very well known builder.

115K on the body.  25,000 on all the custom work and motor.

Flyin' Miata is building a V8-powered MX-5 ND

Fri, Jan 8 2016

It's cold in many parts of the country, but this V8-swapped 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata that Flyin' Miata is developing has us dreaming about throwing on a parka and taking a very brisk drive. This beast is the product of the talented folks at Flyin' Miata, but we can't get too excited just yet. According to the company's brief Facebook post, this is just a dummy V8, placed under the Miata's hood to confirm fit. Judging by the photo, the engine fits like a glove. "There's still a long way to go before this is a real thing," Flyin' Miata writes, but the company admits everything looks "very promising" so far. The post doesn't mention any details about the estimated specs, but Autoblog reached out to Flyin' Miata for more information about this intriguing build. Keith Tanner, one of the mad scientists who shoehorns V8s into Miatas at the Colorado outfit, told us that Flyin' Miata is looking at both the LS3, which will provide between 430 and 525 hp, and the LT1 which is 460 hp out of the box. A supercharged LT4 is also being considered, but as Tanner put it, "that might be a little nuts" in a car as light as the ND. In any of these engine configurations, Tanner estimates the V8-swapped ND should comfortably be a sub-4 second to 60 mph car. The transmission will be a Tremec T56 Magnum six-speed manual. The suspension, brakes, fuel system, cooling system, and the chassis itself will all be beefed up to handle the power, as per normal FM practice. The one question mark is the rear end, as the ND's existing one simply won't be up to the task of putting that much horsepower to the ground. The 2016 Miata was one of the best cars we drove in 2015, but Flyin' Miata knows how to turn a standard MX-5 into an absolute hotrod with the company's LS3 V8 conversions for earlier models. Imagining the more modern chassis from the latest generation with a massive dollop of more power is an exciting thought. We can't wait to see how this project turns out. Related Video:

Mazda books first yearly profit in half-decade, NA still a drag

Tue, 30 Apr 2013

Automotive News reports Mazda has posted its first annual profit in five years. The company made $364.3 million in the last fiscal year, following a $1.14 billion loss the year prior. Operating profit also jumped up by $91.3 million to $572.8 million, thanks in part to a revenue increase of 8 percent to $23.42 billion.
But the news isn't all rays of sunshine. North America continues to be a problem for Mazda where the automaker posted yet another loss. The manufacturer lost $519.1 million last year, up from $427.8 million the year prior. While the launch of the CX-5 helped see US sales increase by 2 percent to 273,000 vehicles, the region as a whole bought up 372,000 units. Mazda had predicted closer to 380,000 units.
Even so, Mazda says it should have North America back in the black by next year, with the company forecasting a sales increase of 11 percent to 415,000 units in the region. That's thanks in part to a boost from the redesigned Mazda6 sedan.

Mazda RX-Vision Concept revives the rotary

Wed, Oct 28 2015

Mazda continues fighting to keep the rotary alive, and with the RX-Vision concept at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, the company unveils its dream for the engine's revival in a curvaceous sports coupe. Before any fans burst with excitement at the prospect, Mazda only "hopes" to have this gorgeous shape available in showrooms someday, for now. The RX-Vision starts with the classic elements of a front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports coupe by combining a long, low hood, short rear deck, and a passenger compartment way at the back. From there, Mazda's stylists add the swooping touches of the brand's Kodo design language. The result looks thoroughly modern and still subtly evokes generations of the RX-7 in the sculpted fenders and flowing roofline. Under that shapely hood hides Mazda's next-generation rotary, which the company has dubbed the Skyactiv-R. Unfortunately, details about it are quite scarce at the moment, including the displacement or even the number of rotors the engine uses. Still, Mazda is abundantly clear that development of the mill is very much moving forward. Mazda's designers opt for a retro flair inside with the deeply dished steering wheel and gauges in three pods. The rest is simple and elegant with a minimalist, metal gearshift rising from the center console and leather straps for door pulls. Finishing things off is a clean mix of red and black upholstery with a little carbon fiber for contrast. Expect live shots from Tokyo soon to show how the RX-Vision looks under the lights. Related Video: Mazda Reveals Mazda RX-VISION Concept -- Powered by next-generation rotary engine SKYACTIV-R, represents Mazda's vision of the future -- HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation unveiled the rotary-powered Mazda RX-VISION sports car concept at the Tokyo Motor Show*1 today. The rotary engine is a symbol of the company's "never-stop-challenging" spirit. RX-VISION represents a vision of the future that Mazda hopes to one day make into reality; a front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car with exquisite, KODO design-based proportions only Mazda could envision, and powered by the next-generation SKYACTIV-R rotary engine. Rotary engines feature a unique construction, generating power through the rotational motion of a triangular rotor. Overcoming numerous technical difficulties, Mazda succeeded in commercializing the rotary engine, fitting it in the Cosmo Sport (known as Mazda 110S overseas) in 1967.
