I'm selling my trusty 1991 Mazda Miata. I'm the original owner, bought it new in 1991, and the fact that it's lasted this long has amazed me. This has been my everyday city car in San Francisco for more than 20 years. For about 15 of those years this car was garaged. Since 2001 I've worked at home, so I've been putting about 7500 miles or less per year on it.

This is a great project car. If you're looking for a super clean, ready to roll low hassle car, this isn't for you. But if you're looking something to make your own or part out, keep reading, and I'll tell you everything about the condition of the car.

Pros:
  • It runs
  • Starts reliably
  • New (2yr) catalytic converter
  • California car, no significant rust
  • Smoke free
  • Clearwater door speakers
  • Tires have 10K or so left
  • Clutch, water pump, timing belt are fine, replaced in the last 5 years.
  • Newer rear brakes and rotors.
  • Original spare in trunk
  • Original radio works
  • Gets about 26mpg
  • Extensive service records
  • Shop manual
  • Clear title
Cons: (Yep, this is a long list)
  • Significant oil leak.
  • Recent steering fluid issue -- I assume there's a small leak, the fluid is low but not empty. This has been going on for about 2 weeks.
  • Speedo cable broken 5 tanks ago. I've estimated the actual mileage at 189,500. I have another vehicle I've been driving the past few weeks.
  • Body damage as visible in pictures.
  • Convertible top zipper is failing. This top has a glass window. It's still sound, but it won't handle being opened and closed many more times. This will require a replacement top, unless you know how to repair the zipper, and I'm not aware that that's possible.
  • Ripped driver's seat. Common in older Miatas.
  • Shocks are dead and need to be replaced.
  • Shift knob skirt is torn.
  • Driver's side window seal is creeping up, needs to be re-seated.
  • Radio works, but sometimes won't turn on, especially if it's been cold over night. After driving a while, it turns on.
  • Air conditioning no longer blows cold.
  • Appears to be a problem with the main cooling fan. Most of the time the car runs at normal temp (halfway between cold and hot on temp gauge). On very long uphills or in bumper to bumper traffic, it gets hot. It has never overheated. Turning on the AC runs the AC fan and cools the car.
I had the compression tested about a year ago when I was diagnosing another problem, and it came back fine. I may have the numbers if you want them.

Much of the work on this car over the past few years was done by my friend Andrew and me. I don't have shop records for that work, but I can tell you what we did. I have shop records for all the other repairs and most of the maintenance.

This car is available to view and test in San Francisco. Contact me if you'd like to see it.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata reveal livestream is here and now

Wed, 03 Sep 2014

Let's not understate the significance and difficulty of what's been accomplished here. In this ever-connected, constantly surveilled modern auto industry, Mazda has pulled a coup - it's kept a new vehicle under wraps. Yes, we've seen hacked up and camouflaged mules and maybe a form under a sheet, but Mazda is about to reveal its next-generation MX-5 Miata, and the car - let alone its specifications - hasn't been leaked anywhere yet. Not via clandestine camera phone snapshot, not by patent drawing, not by leaked ad copy, not even by diecast model. Believe us, we've looked.
And this isn't just some humdrum crossover or workaday compact, it's the Miata, the world's most popular roadster, apple of the enthusiast community's eye and seeming center of gravity for the Japanese automaker. For those who are genuinely excited about cars - about motoring - this is an impressive feat. If anything, Mazda's radio silence regarding the fourth-generation ND Miata has only served to heighten our anticipation for a model that probably won't reach showrooms for another year.
So, what's true and what's false among all the rumors? Will the already lightweight Miata really shed hundreds of pounds? What exactly will live under hood and drive those rear wheels?

2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata configurator fulfills your droptop dreams

Fri, Aug 14 2015

The first batch of 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miatas are already at dealers, but Mazda is finally launching a configurator for its completely revised sports car. Even if pricing doesn't come as a surprise, you can still have some fun creating one to your own specific tastes. The major equipment changes on the Miata happen between the Sport, Club, and Grand Touring trims, and options are generally kept light. The real standout is the Brembo/BBS package for $3,400 that's exclusive to the Club version. It adds Gunmetal 17-inch BBS wheels, Brembo front brakes with red calipers, side sill extensions, a rear bumper skirt, and keyless entry. On the Sport and Grand Touring, $1,200 buys the Appearance Package with a front air dam, side sill extensions and rear bumper skirt. There's also keyless tech for $130 on them. Mazda also offers a few items to dress up the convertible's looks. There's a choice of a black or body color rear lip spoiler for $350, and Soul Red Metallic paint adds $300. For protection, clear film for the front and rear paint is $125, all-weather floor mats go for $90, and wheel locks cost $55. Finally, a cargo net is $50. We ticked every applicable box on the Club trim above to make its $28,600 base price leap to $33,790, after the $820 destination charge on all models. Happy building. Related Video:

Mazda to reveal MX-5 Miata Club Edition in New York

Thu, Mar 26 2015

Mazda is bringing a new version of its latest MX-5 Miata to the New York Auto Show. And while it's giving us very little to go on at the moment, from what we can tell so far, it looks promising. For starters, it's called the Club Edition, which speaks to us of enhanced performance – particularly on the track. For another, the statement below highlights the "maximum driving enjoyment" the existing MX-5 was "designed to deliver," and then proceeds to claim that the Club will "amplify that experience, harking back to the early lightweight sports cars that inspired it, but serving as a beacon for the future as a thoroughly modern, sophisticated package." Hopefully, then, it'll serve as some sort of road-going mid-point between the stock version and the Global Cup racing concept pictured above. We'd expect the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to carry over likely unchanged with its 155 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque, but with the potential addition of a stiffened suspension, upgraded rolling stock, revised aero, enhanced cockpit and maybe some excess weight trimmed out – although the new Miata doesn't have much to lose as it is. In any case, we're excited. Related Video: 2016 MAZDA MX-5 MIATA CLUB EDITION TO DEBUT AT NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW - 2016 MX-5 Club represents most aggressive road-going version - IRVINE, Calif., March 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Ready to join the Club? The 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club edition, that is. Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) will be introducing the North American-spec MX-5 Club next week at the New York International Auto Show. The MX-5 Club represents the most aggressive road-going iteration of Mazda's fourth-generation flagship roadster. The 2016 MX-5 sheds approximately 150 lbs. from its predecessor through use of lightweight, efficient SKYACTIV®1 TECHNOLOGY, now weighing 2,332 lbs. when equipped with the standard SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission (2,381 lbs. with the six-speed automatic). Powering all North American models will be a 2.0-liter SKYACTIV engine, rated at 155 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Shorter than the first-generation MX-5 that initially graced U.S. shores in 1989, yet wider than the outgoing model and with its engine lower and farther back in its chassis, the 2016 MX-5 is designed to deliver maximum driving enjoyment.
