Autoblog Minute: VW finds CO2 'irregularities', Takata dropped by automakers, SEMA recap

US regulators issue a significant fine to Takata Corporation. And we take a peek inside tuner paradise at the 2015 SEMA show. I'm senior editor Greg Migliore and this is your Autoblog Minute Weekly Recap. The VW diesel emissions scandal, first brought to light in September, gets a new wrinkle, as an internal investigation by the German automaker revealed [00:00:30] irregularities in CO2 emissions that could affect approximately 800,000 vehicles. VW estimates the issue could pose a 2-billion euro economic risk. VW claims that most of the vehicles affected have diesel engines, but industry analysts say a 1.4-liter gas engine is also affected. VW says that fuel consumption figures were set too low during the CO2 certification process. During all of this, sales of some diesel-powered Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche models [00:01:00] have been halted. Takata Corporation is back in the news in connection with its deadly airbag scandal. Federal regulators fined Takata $70 million. If the parts supplier does not comply, the fine could balloon to $200 million. Takata was also dropped this week by its biggest customer, Honda. And now, Toyota and Mazda will be following Honda's lead in dropping Takata. We're also hearing that Mitsubishi and Subaru are considering a switch in air-bag inflator suppliers. SEMA 2015 [00:01:30] came and went. We saw offerings from Mopar, like the AWD Challenger concept. Honda unveiled a Ridgeline that it will race at the Baja 1000, which gives us a hint at what future production model could look like. The celebrity presence was also felt in Vegas as it always is. Kid Rock brought a Duramax Diesel Chevy Silverado, and Acura restored and presented Ludacris with his now famous 1993 Acura Legend. Those are the highlights from the week that was. Mazda halts sales of CX-5 due to fire risk in crashes

The Basics: Mazda will recall 264,463 examples of the 2014-2016 Mazda CX-5 in the US. The Problem: The fuel filler pipe can rupture in a rear collision. This could cause a fuel leak, which is a fire risk. Injuries/Deaths: None reported. There are also no reports of fires. The Fix: Mazda has not yet specified the repair for the problem. If You Own One: Concerned owners can get a free loaner, demo, or rental vehicle until Mazda dealers repair the vehicle. More Information: Mazda also has a stop sale on new examples of the CX-5 until the company fixes the problem. Related Video: Mazda Implements Recall and Stop Sale of All 2014-2016 MY CX-5 Vehicles WASHINGTON, DC (February 1, 2016) – Today, Mazda Motor Corporation filed a safety defect report with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to address a concern with 2014-2016 Model Year (MY) CX-5 vehicles. On all 2014-2016 MY CX-5 vehicles, the fuel filler pipe could rupture during a rear collision, and could potentially cause fuel leakage. Approximately 264,463 vehicles are affected in the U.S. There are no reports of accidents or injuries occurring in the subject vehicles as a result of this condition. If a customer has concerns about driving their vehicle before the repair is available, dealers will offer a free loaner, demo, or rental vehicle. Mazda North American Operations is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., and oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States and Mexico through more than 700 dealers. Mazda on sales upswing in Europe but won't build there

Auto sales in Europe have been a tricky proposition for some years, but Mazda has seen some success on the backs of the CX-5 and new Mazda6. According to a report form Automotive News Europe, though, that doesn't mean we should be looking for the Japanese manufacturer to set up production operations there.
Mazda's European CEO, Jeff Guyton, explained to AN that "Our intention is to have manufacturing scale. That gives you scale economy and quality through repeatability." In other words, a big honking plant in one part of the world is preferable to a half dozen small factories building the same vehicles.
European sales for Mazda are up 5.4 percent in the first half of 2013, with 74,000 units sold. That kicked the Zoom-Zoom brand's market share up from one to 1.2 percent. Small gains, but gains nonetheless. According to Guyton, Mazda would need to sell 200,000 units of just one model in Europe for local production to make sense. Mazda's best European year saw 320,000 units sold across the entire range.
