This is my 2004 Mazda RX-8.  I have owned it since 2009 and have loved every minute of it.  It is a RWD car powered by a 1.3L Rotary engine.  The car is super lightweight and an absolute blast to drive.  I have had this car to the track a few times and it has never failed to impress me, revving past many cars with significantly more power due to the low curb rate and the impressive handling.  If you've never driven a rotary, you're missing out on the bliss that is 10,000 RPM.

I am getting married in a few months and could use the extra cash to start a family, so I've got to let the toy go.  As you can tell by the pictures, the car was in a "in-between" phase.  I had just purchased a ton of parts for it before parking it, so many of the parts have very little wear.  It seats four people (the back doors are hidden suicide doors) and while it may not look it, I've fit four adults in it.  You should see people's faces when they see four people step out of it. Hahaha.  A car seat fits comfortably in the back as well.  The car has been sitting since Feb (ran and driven every month since) but will probably need a tune-up since it sat for so long.  The tires are about half-tread all the way around.  The entire ignition system is new, so nothing there will be replaced anytime soon.  Tranny and Diff fluids were replaced about three months before it was parked, filled with full-synthetic Redline products (same thing I've always ran in it).  Battery is a new Optima Red Top.  Been in the car just over a year with storage time, battery has a 3 year warranty. No major damage.  A/C is ice cold, transmission shifts smoothly, radio is loud, runs and drives.  Because the car doesn't have a catalytic convertor (just a heads up to those with emissions tests), it will shoot fireballs if bounced off the limiter, so be aware if someone's riding your butt and you downshift, you will toast their front-end a bit. ;)

The car has a couple of small flaws.  The largest (to me) is the secondary fuel rail regulator went out on it right before I parked it, which affects fuel delivery above 6,000 RPM.  The car will still reach 9800, but it is missing a chunk of power in that range.  The good thing is that's a relatively inexpensive part and the labor isn't particularly tough.  Out of everything I've owned, this has been the easiest car to work on.  Everything is easy to get to because the motor is tiny.  The only other thing mechanically wrong with it is the mail oil seal is leaking.  The leak isn't bad (maybe a quart per oil change?) but like any oil leak, it could be fine for years, it could be fine for days.  That fix is a little more labor intensive, but the seal itself is cheap.  There are a few cracks in the dash, a small hole in the driver seat and the driver's window motor is on its way out.  Otherwise, the car is 100% ready to go.  Maybe $1,000 to get the car to like-new and if it wasn't for the wedding, that's DEFINITELY what I would be doing. XD

Finalists for 2014 Green Car of the Year announced

Thu, 17 Oct 2013

The list of finalists for the 2014 Green Car of the Year has been announced, and in a genuinely bizarre twist, there's only one hybrid and no electric vehicles among the five contestants, despite the arrival of cars like the BMW i3 and Tesla Model S. Taking the place of the EVs are a pair of diesels, repping a technology that last won a Green Car of the Year award in 2009, when the Audi A3 TDI took the title. No diesel was in the running for last year's award.
Naturally, both of the diesel finalists are fielded by the Germans - with BMW's 328d and Audi's A6 TDI getting the nod. In the case of the 3 Series, BMW installed a 2.0-liter, turbodiesel, capable of delivering 180 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, while returning 45 miles per gallon on the highway. Audi and its larger, 3.0-liter, V6 turbodiesel produce quite a bit more grunt, with 240 hp and 428 lb-ft of grunt, but net a very impressive 38 mpg on the highway in the A6.
Finalists for this year's awards include two diesels, three gas-powered cars and a plug-in hybrid.

Mazda MX-5 GT gets green light

Fri, 18 Oct 2013

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is as popular around the Autoblog offices as Kate Upton posters are around fraternity houses. Few staffers have much criticism for Mazda's ubiquitous roadster, and fewer still aren't overjoyed when one arrives in their driveway. So you can imagine how a report from Auto Express about a more potent MX-5 model is going over in our offices today.
The new model, which was shown in concept form as the Mazda MX-5 GT at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, has a slight catch, though. First, we have absolutely no idea if Mazda will bring the MX-5 GT to the US. Secondly, and perhaps more problematically, this isn't a production car - it's a kit from the team at Jota Sport.
Now, to be fair, the kit doesn't sound like a bad thing. It bumps the UK-spec 2.0-liter, 157-horsepower engine up to 203 hp thanks to a sports exhaust and a revamped ECU (46 horsepower from an ECU and exhaust in a naturally aspirated car?). To make the little Miata even more agile, Jota has also fiddled with the suspension. AE doesn't mention things like the grippy tires or Recaro seats that were found on the concept, though.

Marchionne now considering 'Plan B' partners for FCA merger

Thu, Jun 11 2015

Okay Sergio, just stop. With the sting of rejection from General Motors CEO Mary Barra still fresh, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne is moving on and trying to find another automaker to merge with. FCA may not be giving up hope on a merger with GM, but that doesn't mean it isn't at least considering alternatives. Sergio's so-called "Plan Bs" include the Volkswagen Group, as well as smaller Asian outfits, like Mazda, Honda, Suzuki, and Hyundai. Bloomberg reports that France's beleaguered PSA Peugeot Citroen could as a sort of "fallback" option due to its relative lack of volume, an unidentified source claimed. There are, of course, problems with each option. According to Bloomberg, Volkswagen expects complete control of a company, but the Agnelli family, which holds a large portion of FCA stock, is loathe to relinquish its stake in the company. On top of that, VAG just isn't looking to make a deal right now. Mazda, meanwhile, is enjoying a new partnership with Toyota and Suzuki is partially owned by VW. Honda and Hyundai have never expressed any interest in a partnership with a western automaker. That kind of just leaves the French then, but even that remains a long shot. As Bloomberg tells it, PSA boss Carlos Tavares is still working on a turn-around plan, and would want at least another six months to execute before even considering a deal with FCA. And even then, Tavares hasn't given any indication that he's considering a pairing.
