This is a rare and early Pacific Avatar convertible conversion of a 1979 RX7. The following is excerpted from Car Pictures.
From 1979 to 1985, Al Dooley, owner of Pacific Avatar, converted the first generation of RX-7 into convertibles. He had been working as a sales manager at a Mazda dealership and decided the new RX-7 would be a natural for conversion into convertibles. After jigging and strengthening the body with framing under the floor pan, inside, and in the windshield posts, custom convertible tops were installed. Some were sold with standard mechanical equipment but many had turbocharged engines, modified suspensions and brakes, and custom wheels and wider tires. The conversions also got extra publicity when one appeared in the low budget film, 'Smokey Bites the Dust'. First-generation cars were converted as late as 1988 with the last going to a doctor in Baltimore, Maryland. Although many were sold in California, Florida was the biggest market for Pacific Avatar's convertible RX-7s. In all, Dooley reports that 126 conversions were performed. This car has 88,167 miles on it. I bought it intending to restore it with my young son. Some work has been done on the passenger side front area but the care has sat in storage the last five years. It will start with starter fluid and the engine has only a few thousand miles on it after a rebuild. The cloth top seems to be in very good shape though the framing needs some replacement parts made. Structurally, the car is very solid. As you can see from the photos there is no evidence of rot. The door pillers, a known weak point on these cars, are solid. I've included quote a few photos but if you're seriously interested contact me and I'll take photos specifically at your request. This car also comes with a '79 parts car; the interior of which is in very good shape EXCEPT for a torn rear panel on one of the seats. I also have replacement front fenders. |

Translogic 182: CXC Motion Pro II Racing Simulator
Thu, Aug 13 2015Translogic gets some seat time in the CXC Motion Pro II to test if the high fidelity racing simulator can impact our host's real-life track times. Host Jonathon Buckley hits the track at Auto Club Speedway of California in a 2015 BMW M4 to put down a baseline lap time before his virtual training session in the Motion Pro II. After learning the lines of the track in a simulated setting, Jonathon returns to the track to put his skills to the test. "We designed it, originally, as a professional training tool for race car drivers," says CXC Simulation's founder and president Chris Considine. "Make it authentic. Make it real." The Motion Pro II boasts "thousands of cars and track models," ranging from street cars, to rally and off-road vehicles. Will this hyper realistic racing simulator help Jonathon improve his lap time? 2015 Mazda2 spotted on the road
Tue, 15 Apr 2014When Mazda unveiled the Hazumi Concept at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, our excitement for the next Mazda2 increased considerably. The Hazumi looks to retain much of the driving character that makes the current 2 one of the very best cars in its segment while infusing it with more aggressive styling. Of course, when the 2 arrives, it won't look exactly like the Hazumi. That's why these spy photos are so important.
This is our very first look at the next-generation 2, and although the Hazumi influence might be difficult to discern, thanks to the swirly camo, it's still there. The grille shape and the headlights are very similar in shape to the items shown on the concept, while the camouflage disguises the shape of the greenhouse, which looks somewhat like the Hazumi.
What we can't see, though, is under the hood. That's where our spies come in, reporting that a pair of 1.5-liter SkyActiv engines will see action in the tossable 2. The former, which we'll almost certainly see in the US, is a gas-powered mill found in the Euro-spec Mazda3. In the larger 3, it produces 99 horsepower and 111 pound-feet of torque, which is broadly similar to what the current 2's 1.5-liter pumps out. The other engine, a 1.5-liter SkyActiv diesel, probably won't be making the trip, although we'll continue to hope.
Mazda rolls out unlimited mileage warranty in Canada
Fri, 14 Nov 2014Cold weather might be starting to grip parts of Canada, but our neighbors to the north are going to be able to drive their 2015 Mazda cars and utilities from Vancouver to Montreal with a little more peace of mind. That's because Mazda Canada is instituting an unlimited mileage warranty for its new models.
The updated plan starts with all 2015 model year vehicles (even those already sold), and the scheme simply removes that distance limit on everything but the emissions defect coverage. That means that the Mazdas have one year of service adjustments, three years of new vehicle coverage, five years on the powertrain, seven years against corrosion and three years of roadside assistance for as many kilometers as the owner drives.
The change removes at least one, tiny piece of anxiety about buying a new vehicle because it's easy to know when the coverage ends. "By offering our customers an Unlimited Mileage Warranty, we believe it will enhance their ownership experience by alleviating concerns such as kilometre limitations, repair costs and resale value," Kory Koreeda, president of Mazda Canada, in the automaker's announcement.
