Ram/Jeep Ecodiesel engine has Maserati roots

The 3.0L turbodiesel V6 in the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel earned a slot on Ward's Automotive 2014 10 Best Engines for its power, fuel economy and refinement. In a piece looking at how Fiat subsidiary VM Motor developed the engine, Ward's also makes note of the fact that the same lump goes in diesel versions of the Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli. They're tuned a bit differently, naturally, with the QP putting out 275 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, the smaller, lighter Ghibli making do with the same number of horses but a lower torque output of 420 lb-ft.
The 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet put out by the oil-burning six-cylinder in the Ram was tamed with a host of advances, but it appears that Ram hasn't tamed demand: the initial allocation of 8,000 engines was spoken for within three days of the truck going on sale. Slow Chinese market delays Maserati and Alfa Romeo models

We already told you that Alfa Romeo was delaying the Giulia sedan and an unnamed CUV, but now things are getting worse. According to Bloomberg, Maserati has delayed the Alfieri sports car. And it's all China's fault. The faltering Chinese domestic market, which is experiencing its slowest period of growth in nearly three decades, is forcing Fiat Chrysler to rethink its plans for its Italian models, Bloomberg reports. Rather than going for models that would likely be popular in China, including the Alfa CUV and a larger sedan, the company will shift its focus and bring out updated MiTo and Giulietta hatchbacks, both of which would play better in Europe, an unnamed source within FCA told Bloomberg. This news is notable because it shows that FCA boss Sergio Marchionne's ambitious product transformation is not progressing as smoothly as planned. In the MiTo's case, the company is willing to go back on its original strategy. The subcompact hatch wasn't supposed to survive beyond 2016, but Bloomberg is reporting an update is due by the middle of next year. As for Maserati, well, there's not much to say. The Alfieri was supposed to go on sale next year, and now it's not. There's no word on how (or even if) Maserati's priorities will shift to another vehicle, or if this is simply a matter of money being distributed away from one of FCA's brands and toward another. 2020 Maserati Ghibli getting a hybrid powertrain, start of brand revamp

Maserati has officially announced its product plans for the next couple of years, and the company is beginning to embrace electrification. It all starts next year with the 2020 Maserati Ghibli, which will receive a hybrid powertrain. Maserati didn't specify whether it would be the only powertrain, but we would expect that it will still offer some fully gas-powered engines such as the 424-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 in the current model. In the same year, we'll finally see Maserati's next sports car that the company has confirmed will have electric power. By all accounts, it should be the production version of the Alfieri concept that made its debut five years ago. Maserati also confirmed that the Alfieri will not replace the GranTurismo. Instead, the GranTurismo will be getting a new generation. Reports say the new GranTurismo will arrive in 2021. Maserati will also add another crossover to its lineup. Reports say it will be smaller than the Levante. We should see it sometime in 2020, since early production tests will wrap up late that year and in early 2021. Maserati didn't say specifically if there will be an electrified version, but past reports would suggest at least a hybrid will be available. Finally, Maserati mentioned that Quattroporte, Levante and Ghibli will all continue on with some updates. Expect mild facelifts and powertrain updates to them over the next couple of years, rather than a major redesign. Maserati will also be developing more advanced driver assist systems, including a system similar in scope to Cadillac Super Cruise that will allow hands-free highway driving and lane changes.
