Sport Speciale A Scottsdale, Arizona family commissioned the birth of the Sport Speciale Spyder. It is a totally scratch build created by the award-winning restoration coachbuilder, The Creative Workshop, Dania Beach, Florida. A one-in-the-world car. With modern engineering and traditional Carrozzeria build techniques, this hand built, one-of-a-kind masterpiece is a seamless fusion of style and performance. A car that provides soul and character that no modern car and few classics can emulate. In January 2011, the Speciale was independently appraised at a replacement value of $1.5 million. Appraisal as well as all build invoices are available. Quite simply, the Speciale is special….on the road or track…for any collection and at any concours. Yet, if the owner so desires, it can even serve as an excellent every day driver. Completed in late 2007 after a build involving over 7,000 man-hours and two years, the Speciale was inspired by the big displacement European racecars of the late 50’s and early 60’s. The vision behind this car was to take queues from cars such as the Ferrari TR 59/60, Aston Martin DBR1, Maserati 450S and others. The next step was to marry that style, look and attitude to state-of-the-art technology underneath the tubular chassis and hand-formed, lightweight aluminum body, resulting in enhanced performance, safety and drivability that those old racers could only dream of. Powered by a F1 inspired Dinan Performance custom build performance BMW aluminum V12, the theoretical performance of the 2,300 - pound 6-speed Speciale is 251 mph; 0-60 in 3.6. Displacement is 5972 cu.in., 480 lb. ft. torque. Weight ratio is an amazing 5 lbs. per hp. (450 hp.) Fuel delivery is a custom Hilborn-style AEM fuel injection. 12 injectors and stacks. Fully programmable. Front suspension is fully adjustable, independent, dual wishbone. Racing coil-over shocks. Fully adjustable, racing anti-sway bar. Rear suspension is Jaguar-style independent rear “drop-out” sub-assembly. Indoor disc brakes with 4 coil-over shock absorbers. Auburn limited slip differential. All which deliver an extremely comfortable ride. Brakes are (front) Brembo racing discs and calipers, (rear) Wilwood racing discs and calipers. Steering is BRT rack steering. Although the “guts” of the car are hi-tech, the details are all original and authentic. Gauges are original Veglia, the steering wheel original Nardi, the lights are original Marchal and Carello. Switches are Magneti Marelli and the wheels were built at the Borrani Factory in Italy, as were the hubs and the knockoffs – on the original jigs that built the same Wires for the Ferraris of old. The Sport Speciale has earned an astounding amount of worldwide press coverage, including publications in more than 32 countries:
The Speciale was created to be driven and not as a “trailer queen.” Despite being shown sparingly, the Speciale has always won Best of Show or Best of Class in any competition entered, including Cavallino Classic Sports Sunday, Concorso Italiano, Festival of Speed, and the Rocky Mountain Concours among others. Despite the fact that the Speciale was built to be driven, it has logged just above 6,500 miles….the owners are fortunate enough to have a stable of cars. The Sport Speciale will retain its exclusivity, as it will never be duplicated unless the owner decides otherwise. Coachbuilder letter re: (exclusivity available.) Accepting all REASONABLE offers. Maserati Levante crossover not Jeep based after all?
Thu, 20 Feb 2014Maserati has been teasing its crossover project since 2011, which is when it first showed off the Kubang concept (pictured above). Still, the production version, rumored to be called the Levante, remains a complete mystery. The CUV was first rumored to borrow the platform from the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but new rumors indicate that the Italian, luxury crossover might actually take the underpinnings from the Quattroporte and Ghibli.
In a brief interview, Maserati CEO Harald Wester told CNN Money that the Levante wouldn't use Jeep's platform. Motor Trend spoke with an unnamed Maserati engineer who confirmed the rumor. Officially, the company says that no decision has been made.
We can add this to another long list of rumors about the Italian CUV. It was originally supposed to be built at Chrysler's Jefferson North assembly plant in Detroit. Then, plans were changed to build it in Italy.
2014 Maserati Ghibli S Q4 [w/video]
Wed, 12 Mar 2014For one reason or another, this is a car people stare at. They might be drawn to its curvaceous shape riding on immense wheels. They could be intrigued by its gaping, blacked-out grille which houses an equally outsized trident logo, or doing quick calculations about the last time they saw a car wearing the name Maserati. It may be its sports-car-like proportions mixed with achingly long, four-door bodywork that draws their eye.
Or, and I urge you to consider this theory carefully, the people taking notice of this Maserati Ghibli S Q4 might simply be newly alert after hearing the sound of its exhaust ricocheting off any solid thing nearby as I drive past grinning like a certified asshat. Did you hear an Italianate engine song careening through your Ann Arbor, MI neighborhood, in the black of the early morning, just a few weeks previous? Sorry, guy, that was probably me.
I spent a week hammering this all-wheel-drive Ghibli as hard as I dared in the last truly miserable stretch of the God Awful Winter of 2014. I can honestly say that I enjoyed myself, shocked at both the frank way this new challenger luxury car went down the road as well as the attention it garnered in the process.
2014 Maserati Ghibli snarls in Shanghai
Sat, 20 Apr 2013Big things are happening at Maserati, where the automaker is looking to increase its sales to 50,000 units annually. In addition to the revised Quattroporte that we saw at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, Maserati has launched the all-new Ghibli here in Shanghai - a smaller, more driver-focused model that will take on the likes of the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
At launch, the Ghibli will be offered with three six-cylinder engines, two gas and one diesel. The base engine is a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 330 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque, good for a 0-62 time of 5.6 seconds. The more powerful Ghibli S, however, comes with a twin-turbocharged version of this engine, good for 410 hp and 406 lb-ft, reducing that 0-62 time to just five seconds flat. On the diesel end, the Ghibli will offer a 3.0-liter diesel V6 with 275 hp and 443 lb-ft of twist, able to do that same 62-mile-per-hour run in a still impressive 6.3 seconds. The more powerful Ghibli S will also be available with Maserati's new Q4 all-wheel-drive system, though we're told that this feature cannot be had on right-hand-drive versions.
As for what we can see here in Shanghai, the Ghibli looks pretty darn good, though that front fascia reminds us an awful lot of the BMW 3 Series. (Seriously, just picture the Bimmer with a more gaping grille opening.) Maserati will offer the Ghibli with standard 18-inch wheels, though 19s, 20s, and even 21s will be available as optional extras.
