This 2002 Maserati Spyder GT has been a blast to own. With its 4.2 Liter V8 engine putting out 400hp , coupled with a 6 speed manual gear box makes for a very fast and fun car to drive. Its distinctive look with large chrome trident front emblem gets a tone of looks where ever I go. This car has been very well maintained has low miles (46,000) with recent service. Over the summer I replaced the intake manifold gaskets, the mass air flow sensor, new secondary air pump, new oxygen sensors, new front and rear brakes with cross drilled rotors, new alternator , new battery and new front shocks. This car is equipped with the cold weather package so it does have heated seats, power windows, locks, power mirrors, a/c blows cold, convertible top works properly, xenon head lights, navigation and cd changer. This car is also equipped with the skyhook adaptive suspension which allows the car to corner like a dream. I did modify the exhaust and it truly does sound like an F1 car going down the street, not too loud but definitely has a nice low rumble on start up and acceleration ! I also did have some carbon fiber stripes installed on hood and trunk lid along with some nice carbon fiber wrap on the bottom skirts with the Maserati Spyder GT Emblem. Paint is clean, metallic black with a nice deep rich shine to it and next to no blemishes! only has one small door ding on the passenger door which is hardly noticeable, the interior is dark charcoal leather and is in great condition with no rips or tares! Never been in any accident, completely clean car history ! I have listed it as a no reserve auction so please only bid if you have the funds to purchase if you win. Modena, Italy — Old rivals, hardened from decades of battle on the racetrack and in the marketplace, laid down their swords when purchased Maserati in September of 1997. This March, the storied marque with the trident logo makes its return to U.S. with the 2-seat Spyder after an 11-year absence. The new profits heavily from synergies with Ferrari on engineering, production and distribution fronts, though Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo was quick to point out the differences: "If you want an extreme car — extreme in terms of drive, performance, design — you have to buy a Ferrari. If you want a sports-car attitude, GT, more comfortable, not extreme but sport, you have to buy a Maserati." At which point he urges the waiters at Il Cavallino, the famous trattoria on Ferrari's Maranello grounds, to speed up delivery of pasta and truffles. "I'm talking about a sports car, and we have to show that even in the kitchen we have a sports car!" Built in a thoroughly modern factory — inside the original brick structure that was Maserati's Modena home after its move from Bologna in 1939 — the is a serious performance car that uses the 3200 GT as a jump-off point. From that base, much has been changed, starting with an all-new 4.2-liter 90-degree V-8 that's 1.2 in. shorter and 44 lb. lighter than the 3200 GT's engine, despite an additional liter of displacement. Lubrication of the aluminum/silicon engine is via dry sump, and the Formula 1 experience shows with three scavenge pumps and one pressure pump, packaged with the water pump, in a neat bundle on the side of the engine. Roller chains drive four camshafts, the intakes under the control of a variable timing system, actuating four valves per cylinder via bucket tappets with built-in lash adjusters. Output is an impressive 390 bhp at 7000 rpm, with peak torque of 333 lb.-ft. at 4500 rpm. Drive is taken through a small-diameter twin-disc clutch, and then through a driveshaft running in a torque tube that rigidly connects the bellhousing to the rear-mounted 6-speed transaxle. And that's where Cambiocorsa (Italian for "race change") comes into play. Developed by Magneti-Marelli and fine-tuned by Maserati, the system uses twin paddles behind the steering wheel for hydraulically actuated shifts in 0.25 second (the actual gearchange, without the clutching and de-clutching, takes place in a scant 80 milliseconds). A conventional 6-speed transaxle will also be available in the Spyder GT. A tour of the assembly line allowed us to view the entire drivetrain before it was mated to the chassis, complete with steel subframes to which elegant aluminum links and forged aluminum hub carriers attach. A large Brembo brake disc and 4-piston fixed caliper caps off each double-wishbone corner. There are a suspiciously large number of electrical leads coming off each front hub — the usual ABS wheel-speed sensor, perhaps one for brake pad wear — but the third lead is for an accelerometer for the Skyhook adjustable damping system. With a total of six accelerometers — on the body, each front hub and the right rear strut — the system's computer can compare the motions of both chassis and suspension and quickly adjust the damping accordingly. A console-mounted switch gives the options of Normal and Sport baselines, settings that also affect shifting aggressiveness.

Maserati switching to in-house twin-turbo V6 and turbo four
Fri, Jun 26 2020Automotive News has been able to put some output figures to the two primary engines that will power Maserati's renaissance. Last year the Italian luxury brand sent notice that it would terminate its deal to with Ferrari to use the Maranello-sourced F160 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 and F154 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8. As new Maserati models appear and current models are overhauled, the brand will begin installing either Maserati's own 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, or an FCA-sourced 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. The V6 will greet the world from the middle of the MC20 supercar poised for debut in September, assuming nothing goes worse with the world than it already has. Rumor from Mopar Insiders and Allpar forums is that Maserati began building its V6 based on Alfa Romeo's 690T V6. Alfa Romeo puts the 690T in the Stelvio and Giulia Quadrifoglio, the engine's development having started seven years ago with Ferrari's F154 V8 as its heart. Tuned for speed, peak output could reach 542 horsepower. After making its home in the racy coupe, the V6 will also serve a new midsize Maserati crossover coming next year, as well as the next GranTurismo coupe and GranCabrio convertible. In the crossover, power is apparently limited to no more than 523 horses. In Maserati's new V6, one piece of technology that permits such high output and emissions friendliness is turbulent jet ignition (TJI). German supplier Mahle has been developing the technology for at least 10 years, and put it to use in Ferrari's Formula 1 engine about five years ago, after which Japan's Super GT manufacturers picked it up. Instead of a spark plug igniting fuel directly in the combustion chamber, TJI places the spark plug and an injector nozzle at the top of a "jet ignition pre-chamber assembly." The injector shoots a mist of gasoline into the pre-chamber, the spark plug fires, and the force of ignition in the pre-chamber sprays the combustion through tiny holes at the bottom of the pre-chamber into the cylinder as the piston rises. Mahle says the shorter burn and improved combustion spread means cleaner-burning gas engines that emit fewer emissions.  AN says that the "new V-6 engine will be 'electrified' in some form." It's not clear if that means all versions of the V6 will get some sort of hybrid assistance, or if — as had been thought — there will be a non-hybrid unit.
Maserati details the new, 630-hp V6 that will power its mid-engined MC20 coupe
Wed, Jul 1 2020Maserati is done leaning on former sister company Ferrari for technical support. It has unveiled the six-cylinder engine it designed and will build in-house to power the MC20 supercar that's scheduled to make its debut later in 2020. Ferrari's willingness to develop and/or build engines for Maserati shrank significantly when it split from former parent company Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) in early 2016 and became independent. Insiders knew the division would be spun off, so they began designing Maserati's new engine (which is called Nettuno) in 2015 and accelerated the process in 2017. It's a 90-degree, 3.0-liter V6 with a dry sump and a twin-spark, pre-chamber ignition system rooted in racing. In this application, it's twin-turbocharged (the turbos are mounted on the outside of the engine rather than in the middle of it) and it's equipped with both direct and indirect fuel injection. All told, the 485-pound Nettuno engine develops 630 horsepower at 7,500 rpm and 538 pound-feet of torque between 3,000 and 5,500 rpm. It continues revving to a redline of 8,000 rpm. Matteo Valentini, Maserati's chief engineer, explained the Nettuno engine will ultimately power the company's entire range of vehicles, though he stopped short of naming the specific models that will use it after the MC20. He added the six-cylinder will "bring Maserati back into the world of racing," meaning its output will likely grow in the not-too-distant future. We'll learn more about the engine when the MC20 makes its debut September 9. What remains to be seen is whether Maserati will replace the V8 available in the Levante and the Quattroporte, or if it will surf the downsizing wave sweeping across the industry. Developed jointly with Ferrari in the early 2010s, that engine makes 590 horsepower when it's bolted in the Levante Trofeo's bay, meaning its output is eclipsed by the Nettuno V6's. Both engines are built around a 90-degree architecture, so the 3.0-liter V6 could turn into a 4.0-liter V8 if it's modular enough to gain a pair of cylinders — and if Maserati sees a market for another eight-cylinder. Maserati surprises Manhattan with Centennial edition GranTurismo
Thu, 17 Apr 2014The GranTurismo may be getting a little long in the proverbial tooth, but it hasn't quite been a century just yet. It has, however, been a hundred years since Maserati was originally founded, and to celebrate that milestone, the Modenese automaker has rolled in to the New York Auto Show this year with a pair of special editions. Available in either coupe or convertible form, the MC Centennial Editions arrived as a surprise just as the Alfieri concept was a month ago in Geneva, albeit somewhat less revolutionary.
The special editions are differentiated from any other by their paint scheme, special wheels, revamped interior and special badging throughout. Magma red and Inchiostro blue - the colors of the city of Bologna where the company was founded a century ago - are new to the Maserati catalog, and come with a choice of wheel options with special logos at the center. The interior color is specified to complement the exterior with red, white or blue trim and carbon-fiber accents.
Power comes from the same 4.7-liter V8 as the GranTurismo MC Stradale or GranCabrio Sport, driving 454 horsepower to the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. That's said to be enough to propel either coupe or convertible to a top speed of 185 miles per hour, and comes coupled with Brembo brakes and MC sport suspension.
