Maserati expands Quattroporte cable recall to 1,000 units

It was nearly two years ago that Maserati issued a recall for a number of Quattroporte sedans. At the time, the recall only affected 63 units in the United States. But now the Italian automaker has broadened that campaign to include nearly 1,000 examples across the country. The issue in question is related to the battery positive cable for the alternator and starter motor, the insulating cap of which may not have been installed correctly. The cable may not have been secured properly in the engine bay, too. According to the statement below from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem could increase the likelihood of the cable shorting out, causing the wiring harness to overheat and potentially start a fire, or the engine to stall and potentially cause the vehicle to crash. The expanded recall still only affects certain examples of the 2014 Maserati Quattroporte GTS with the V8 engine – namely those manufactured between October 1 and December 31, 2013. That now includes an estimated 984 vehicles in the United States, the owners of which can expect to hear from their local dealer to have the cable inspected and, if necessary, replaced. In the affected vehicles, the battery positive cable for the alternator and starter motor may not have its insulating cap installed properly at the starter motor. Additionally, the cable may not be adequately secured in the engine bay. These factors may result in the cable shorting to ground. CONSEQUENCE: If the battery positive cable shorts to ground, the wiring harness may overheat, resulting in a fire. The car also may stall, increasing the risk of a crash. REMEDY: Maserati will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicle to verify that the starter motor cable has a properly installed protective cap and that the cable is adequately secured. If not, the starter motor cable assembly will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin November 11, 2015. Maserati looking to book 13,000 sales of new Quattroporte in 2013

Europe's continuing financial woe is forcing automakers to get creative, and while Fiat may be scaling back its volume vehicles, it's looking to ramp up production of the exclusive Maserati brand. Following the debut of a new Quattroporte sedan, Fiat wants to boost Maserati sales to 50,000 vehicles by 2015. Maserati may lose as much as €7 million ($9.05 million) this year, and Fiat is betting big on Chrysler platforms and dealers to turn that around.
Currently regarded as a low-volume boutique carmaker, Maserati sold just 6,159 units last year, and 4,700 units through three quarters of this year. For 2013, Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne is targeting 13,000 in sales of the redesigned Quattroporte alone. Fiat apparently wants the brand's low volume image to change, hoping to position it closer to BMW and Porsche in the market.
The recent unveiling of the new Quattroporte will be followed by more new vehicle launches, including a crossover utility called Levante, and a long-promised sub-Quattroporte sedan, called Ghibli. The latter will share certain components with the Chrysler 300 sedan in an effort to optimize production costs. The Ghibli will be positioned to take on the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It's all in an effort to turn the profit tide for Maserati and its parent company Fiat amidst European economic turmoil.

Maserati Levante will borrow Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid's PHEV powertrain

The plug-in hybrid tech from the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan will move seriously upmarket into a future version of the Maserati Levante crossover. The PHEV model should arrive around early 2018 or possibly the end of 2017, division boss Harald Wester told Motor Trend. Wester was blunt about the reason for using the minivan's powertrain. "A standalone program would be suicidal so we have to look at FCA," he said to Motor Trend. However, he expects the PHEV to comprise a tiny portion of the luxury CUV's sales volume – possibly as low as six percent. The Pacifica Hybrid will be the first PHEV minivan in the US when it arrives in the second half of 2016. The powertrain combines a 3.6-liter V6 that runs on the more efficient Atkinson cycle, and two electric motors, which are in the gearbox. A 16-kWh lithium-ion battery under the floor stores the energy for the system. Chrysler estimates the setup can carry the minivan 30 miles purely on electric power and achieve 80 MPGe. The first examples of the Levante should arrive in the US in August, according to Motor Trend. Maserati plans initially to offer its luxury crossover here with two twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6s. Base models use a version with 350 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. The S trim gets some extra grunt thanks to a tune that makes 430 hp and 427 lb-ft. Both models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, and a limited-slip differential. The Maserati will have a fleet of posh, European crossovers to fight against, and the PHEV will possibly offer an edge to entice a few green-minded, wealthy customers. Related Video:
