SATISFACTION GUARANTEE POLICY

Ferrari to stop supplying Maserati with its engines

The Ferrari Q1 earnings call was full of information, and perhaps the biggest revelation was that Ferrari is going to stop supplying engines to Maserati. CEO Louis Camilleri broke the news, and The Motley Fool posted a transcript of the whole call online. "Eventually, we will no longer supply engines to Maserati, which actually from our perspective is actually a good thing, both from a margin perspective, but also the fact that we can transfer a lot of the labor that's been focused on the engines to the car side of the business," Camilleri says. Maserati has used Ferrari engines (arguably, one of the most compelling reasons to buy a Maserati) in its vehicles since 2002, a little while after Fiat passed Maserati off to the prancing horse. The partnership continued as both Ferrari and Maserati were under the same house at FCA. Then when Ferrari was spun off from FCA in 2015, they kept the supply steady to Maserati. Those engines include a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8, 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 and a 4.7-liter naturally aspirated V8. Camilleri said Ferrari will officially stop in 2021 or 2022, with no intention of supplying anybody with engines beyond that. Of course, this leaves Maserati high and dry with no engines for its growing lineup. Maserati will have to reach into the FCA parts bin, find a new outside supplier or develop its own engines. Battery electric sounds out of the question. As of now, there doesn't appear to be a clear plan going forward. We've reached out to Maserati to see if they have any comment on the situation as it stands.

2018 Maserati Ghibli gets new lights and grille

It's been nearly four years since Maserati introduced the 2014 Ghibli, and it's soldiered on largely unchanged. Finally, Maserati is prepping a respectable facelift front and rear. The changes seem to be concentrated on headlights and grilles. The lights now appear to have a chrome or aluminum highlight that curves upward, dividing the LED running lights from the rest of the lighting. This is a distinct difference from the current highlight that curves downward. Also, the grille now looks to have a more rounded shape, closer to the oval grilles of early- and mid-2000s Maseratis. The lower grille also seems to have smaller inlets at each corner. At the back, the rear bumper has clearly been reworked. Unfortunately, the giant black diaper covering it reveals absolutely nothing. Aside from these changes, the rest of the new Ghibli looks the same. Because this is clearly a mid-cycle refresh, we expect to see the car fully revealed by the end of the year, with vehicles hitting the lots early next year. Related Video:

Last year two of the biggest names in Italian style – one from the automotive industry and one from fashion Â– announced a partnership. Together Maserati and Ermenegildo Zegna revealed a "concept" version of the Quattroporte at the Frankfurt Motor Show, only given how production-ready the show car already looked, nobody really believed it would remain just a concept. And now, having revealed the final version in Geneva, Maserati has confirmed it for production. Limited production, that is, because Maserati will only build 100 examples of the Quattroporte Zegna edition for consumption around the world. That's about one-thirtieth of the number of cars Maserati produces each month at this point, and while the Modenese automaker doesn't break down its sales figures by model, the QP accounts for a large proportion of those numbers. Maserati also hasn't said just how much it will charge for the Zegna edition, but you can bet it'll be a handsome premium Â– more than some of those designer-edition hatchbacks get at any rate Â– yet it'll undoubtedly offload the entire run in short order.
