2003 - Lotus Esprit on 2040-cars
Mission Hills, California, United States
This is the car Lotus wanted to sell. Instead of detuning their wonderful V8 due to drivetrain issues, - fix the weak transaxle and let it pump out the 500 horses it was intended to! That’s exactly what you have here. The current owner ( only the second ) has taken a, sweet 20K California car and spent well over 100,000 to build this Ferrari eating supercar. All this and it is still capable of passing the strict California Emissions test and dropping a very happy kid off at school. Most of the work was performed by a well known Los Angeles County Lotus specialist and there has been a lot of it. Starting with the engine, it has been completely disassembled blueprinted, balanced and rebuilt using new bearings, forged pistons etc. The heads have been reworked and fuel system has benefited from a set of matched injectors and an ECU that is reprogrammable with the use of chips. Breathing in through K&N free flowing filters the turbo’s ( both rebuilt) now cool the air in a large charge cooler prior to the engine breathing out through racing cats. The manifolds have been Jet Hot coated and the racing exhaust system features upgraded O2 sensors and the turbos have new blow off valves and a very neat 15 pound boost gauge added to the interior. The result is an amazing sound and incredible performance. Aesthetically the engine also looks the part with a lot of candy blue powder coating, Aeroquip lines and braided or silicone hoses. The whole thing is held in the car by a set of heavy duty engine mounts. The torque is gripped by a 3 plate racing clutch and fed into the upgraded UN-1-13 gearbox, and custom linkage that is controlled with a brushed aluminum shifter knob with Lotus logo. The final drive was replaced with a Quaife limited slip differential. The rubber that hits the road consists of a good set of Dunlop Sport 9000 tires, 285/35ZR18 on the rear and 235/40zZR17 on the front. Suspension tweaking was next with new Lotus Bilstein shocks front and back, held up by Eibach springs all round with a 17mm sway bar fitted at the front. Finally stopping power was increased to match the forward motion by using Willwood 6 pot calipers on the front with a similar set of 4 piston units at the back with 12 inch ventilated discs all round. The cooling system did not go untouched either, having a new water pump, hi capacity radiator and high performance fan set-up, which all keep this fire breathing beast cool at all times.. To protect this vulnerable area a ¼ inch thick skid plate was added under the front. There is also a manual override switch controllable from the drivers seat. To help keep you driving, the car is equipped with Generation 8 High Power laser interceptors with quad detectors and a Valentine One radar locator, high range hidden system with controls units in the dash and hidden sensors installed in the front and rear bumpers – Stealth? The interior shows a little use, but is in good condition, with race inspired leather seats and dash, as well as a leather wrapped steering wheel and hand brake. It has also had a Halon fire extinguishing system neatly installed – just in case! This Esprit also has been equipped with a Kenwood radio with IPod connection, DVD and GPS system, and has had additional speakers installed for a total of 6 Alpine and 2 Infinity speakers, 4-mid range and 2 large woofers, and two tweeters with an external amplifier system. The car also has an active Low Jack anti theft system installed. The factory heat and air conditioning, both work as intended. The headlights were upgraded to new Hella Headlamp System, and the taillights are LED. The entire front half of the car has been shielded with SC Clearbra to eliminate road rash and it has done a good job. The exterior paint very nice, a deep black and in good condition, there is one minor scratch on the driver side quarter panel. There are some chips and scrapes to the lower valence/bumper but nothing unexpected or unusual. It has had a new gasket kit for the sun roof installed. There is a lot of invoices and a current smog certificate that go with this car along with a hardtop panel and some extra exhaust parts. This black beauty starts with ease, idles smoothly with performance that is breathtakingly fast. Although this car is obviously extremely powerful, it is surprisingly docile and easy to drive. The racing clutch is firm but forgiving and the gears selection easy and precise, not always the case with mid engine cars. It’s easy to just to cruise around town - until you stop wanting to cruise. The upgrades have come together to make this an exceptional automobile. This is a testament to the overall approach of no cutting corners by the owner and the professional manner in which these upgrades have been carried out. It has been well looked after since its purchase in 2006 and driven frequently but lightly by its mature owner and now it is time to pass it on for someone else to enjoy. It has never been crashed and it is straight, very clean and turns heads wherever it goes.

This is how ground effects work in a nutshell
Wed, Mar 30 2016There are two ways to generate downforce. One is with all manner of wings and spoilers on the surface of the vehicle. The other is with ground effects. One you can clearly see, the other remains something of a hidden mystery. Fortunately, the good folks at Lotus and Goodwood are here to dumb it down for us non-engineer types. It's called Bernoulli's Principle, named after Swiss physicist Daniel Bernoulli who literally wrote the book on the subject way back in the 1700s. Countless engineers have spent their careers focused on its study and application, but the crux of the matter is that, as the speed of air (or other "fluid") increases, pressure decreases. Play with the air's increasing speed and decreasing pressure just right and you can generate downforce underneath the body of a car without significantly increasing drag as you would with surface spoilers. For evidence of how Bernoulli's Principle applies in practical terms, just look at the last Ferrari to pack a turbocharged V8 in the middle and the latest one. The F40 had a giant wing on the back, where the 488 GTB has none. But because the 488 uses underbody aerodynamics (or "ground effects"), it generates significantly more downforce than the winged F40 ever could, and at lower speeds. Ferrari, however, was not the first outfit to harness the power of ground effects. Lotus did with the legendary 79 that Mario Andretti drove to the world championship back in 1978. That was the genius of Colin Chapman, and to explain how it all works in layman's terms, our friends over at Goodwood Road & Racing brought in Colin's son Clive Chapman, head of Classic Team Lotus, to put together the video above. Lotus Evora GT410 Sport exhaust is the best new holiday song
Fri, Dec 21 2018No matter what holidays people are celebrating, there's one winter celebration car enthusiasts can come together for: Driftmas. A Lotus Evora GT410 Sport was recently possessed by the ghost of Driftmas present Ken Block and decided to get sideways all over the Lotus campus in Hethel, Norfolk, England. The result is a beautiful winter symphony. The video is done in a slightly cheeky manner, as the yellow Evora shows up to work with a fully geared-up driver in the front seat, and a full Christmas tree stick to the rear engine cover. After blowing past a pristine Espirit S1 in a "slow" zone, the Evora slowly creeps through one of the garages, where a beautiful black and gold Type 72 race car sits quiet as a mouse. It then makes its way through a testing area and to a parking lot, where it rings a few bells around three specialty Lotus models, including what appear to be Exige Cup cars. It finishes the ride in front of the main office, where Lotus has another Christmas tree filled with little toy cars as ornaments. Before the Grinches start complaining about how it's not Gymkhana, that's correct. It's not. But we'd never turn our noses at a video with a soundtrack a sweet as this. Merry Driftmas to all. Lotus Advanced Performance division wants to make your dreams come true
Wed, Feb 9 2022Lotus took a big step in its quest to position itself as a British alternative to Porsche by launching a division called Advanced Performance. Run by a former Aston Martin executive, Lotus Advanced Performance will design and build one-off and few-off models, among other tasks. Most high-end and specialty carmakers operate a program that gives customers some degree of freedom in terms of customization. Lotus was, until now, largely an exception to this rule. It hopes to make up for lost time by giving its Advanced Performance division a surprisingly long list of responsibilities. First the department will be responsible for building "ultra-exclusive and unique vehicles" that will not be part of the firm's regular-production line-up. One of these (shown in a sketch above) looks like it draws inspiration from classic Formula One cars. Details are few and far between, but the massive rear wing speaks volumes about the kind of halo cars we'll see in the not-too-distant future. What's unclear is whether Lotus will take customer requests. We've reached out, and we'll update this story if we learn more. Designing limited-edition models and developing race cars will also fall within the scope of Advanced Performance's responsibilities. And, it's the door that buyers who want to customize their car will need to knock on; they'll be able to select different paint colors, trim materials, and upholsteries. Optional extras and a range of Lotus-branded accessories will also emerge from Advanced Performance's headquarters. Immersing customers and enthusiasts into the Lotus world is important as well, so Advanced Performance will organize tours of the brand's production lines, organize driving academies around the world (including on the Hethel test track in England) and prepare "money can't buy" opportunities for clients. There's no word yet on what these experiences will look like; more information should emerge later in 2022. Lotus put Simon Lane in charge of its Advanced Performance division. He's a good choice: his resume includes leading Aston Martin's Q division, whose list of responsibilities looks a lot like Advanced Performance's. Q notably brought us the V8-powered Cygnet in 2018 and the one-of-a-kind Victor unveiled in 2020. Some of its other projects have been more tame: it gave the DBX a long list of carbon fiber parts.
