This is a classic British Lotus Elan +2 that is in great condition and completely drivable.  It looks great, runs and drives great, has a fabulous interior and is generally in very good condition. This Lotus twin cam engine is the desirable Weber head with 2 DCOE 40mm carburetors.  This also means that this car doesn't have the slightly awkward looking square bulge on the bonnet that the later cars had to clear their Stromberg carbs.

The chassis is in excellent condition. I can't find any rust or problems at all other than minor surface rust. Underneath the car looks very clean. The glassfibre body is also in excellent condition with no signs of accident damage or repair. I was told it was re-sprayed around 12 years ago but then sat unattended for a long time. It has quite a few small chips and touch ups in the paint, There is one large chip (about 1 1/2") just ahead of the boot where I'm told something fell on it while it was stored. Also there is a couple odd discoloured spots on the left front wing (see picture). Despite the flaws the car shines nice and still looks terrific. The re-paint was very thorough and under the hood looks very clean and nice and the door jambs are also very clean.

The Glass is all excellent, all the seals are nice. The doors fit great and don't droop.  The chrome front bumper is very nice but the rear has some flaking and rust spots. The Tyres are brand new Fisk classics. it has a good spare and the special tool needed for the center hub nut.  The vacuum operated headlamps work great and this car uses vacuum to raise the lamps rather than the other way around like the later cars. The benefit being that the lamps stay down when the car is parked. Inside the boot (trunk) is very clean with all its carpet and plywood sub floor intact.

The Interior is excellent. The wood dash is amazingly nice. This car has the nice early style dash with toggle switches rather than the federally imposed rocker switches. The dash top and trim pieces are all present and in great condition. The seats are all excellent front and back. The front seats are the earlier low back seats which means unlike the later style they can tilt forward without hitting the ceiling and you can actually get in the back. The carpets are great. The headliner too is excellent as are the door panels. The seat belts have been updated to something more modern and work perfect and are quite comfortable. It's missing the lenses for the two rear interior lamps but they do work. All the gauges and warning lamps work and amazingly it still has its original radio that still works! It also still has its original Colin Chapman signature steering wheel in beautiful condition. The heater controls all work perfect and this car has astoundingly good heat and defrost.

The suspension is excellent. The steering is tight and precise. The brakes work perfect. The brake booster has been removed but this lightweight car really doesn't need it. This car has single circuit brakes so it only had one booster. The engine has good power and runs very nice. It idles nice and smooth. The cooling system works excellent and it has the early wider radiator (later cars rad is much smaller). The water pump was recently rebuilt (a common problem and a big job on the twin cam) It doesn't leak any fluids but it does burn a little oil and occasionally is a bit smokey usually when cold or when accelerating away hard from a stop. Twin cams have a reputation for this. It isn't terrible but it isn't perfect either. The oil pressure is great. The clutch is a bit abrupt to release but works great, just takes a bit of getting used to. The 4 speed gearbox is absolutely excellent with no issues at all. There are no drips or problems from the differential. The rubber donuts (rotoflex couplings) in the rear axles look a bit old but still function well.  It can be a bit cold blooded to start on cold days but not hard once you learn the routine. It does have working chokes. The exhaust is in great shape, It has a sporty sounding glass pack muffler that some might find too loud but can easily be replaced.

The 12V negative earth electrics are in very good order. All the lights, wipers, horn and even the glove box light works! The charging system has been upgraded to a modern internally regulated and cheap to replace GM alternator.  It is not currently licensed but it does come with a clear title.

Overall this is a great car in very good condition. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. If you'd like to chat on the phone send me a message and I'll give you my number.

I highly recommend and encourage a personal inspection if possible.
The Elan can be viewed by appointment in Granite Falls WA (near Seattle).

Tesla Model S Easter egg turns car into submarine

Sun, Mar 1 2015

When thinking about Elon Musk, the first thing that comes to mind may not be his sense of humor. However, the Tesla boss is embedding a pretty funny Easter egg in the company's cars that references a part of his own collection. Musk famously purchased the Lotus Esprit submarine from the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me for about $967,000 in 2013. At one point, he even intended to install a Tesla powertrain and make it fully transformable. From anyone else that plan would sound like pure fantasy, but Musk has the money and the means to make it happen, if he wants. Now, every Tesla Model S driver gets to share in just a little of that very cool ownership experience. A person on YouTube filmed how to access the Easter egg, and it's extremely easy. Just hold down the T on the infotainment screen for a few seconds, enter the appropriate code 007 and check the suspension settings page. Instead of seeing a Model S, Bond's submersible Esprit now appears. As another cool touch, users can set the vehicle's depth in leagues, and the options max out at 20,000. This is almost certainly a subtle reference to the classic story 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Maybe someday Musk can get the Lotus' conversion complete, and we can see it working for real. Until then, this a neat way to show the unique car off. Related Video:

Lotus supposedly working up a new Elan, again

Mon, Nov 4 2019

Geely's investment in Volvo, and giving Volvo the freedom to do what Volvo knows how to do, propelled the Swedish automaker to another level. This could be the year English automaker Lotus begins the same climb. Late last year, Bloomberg said Geely committed an initial $2 billion to the Lotus renaissance. That number was low, the Financial Times reporting Geely planned to invest billions over the next five years. In May this year, Lotus announced it was hiring 200 new engineers and opening a new engineering center to develop a new range of SUVs, GTs, and sedans that would expand consumer appeal to triple its current annual volume. Sports cars are a vital part of the new mix as well, Autocar citing Lotus insiders for a report that a new Elan convertible sports car has "a strong possibility of being revived in the next few years" as a nameplate.    Lotus made a splash about bringing back the Elan — along with a new Esprit, Eterne, Elise, Elite, and city car — at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. That was a very different Lotus, when Malaysian automaker Proton owned the English outfit and ex-Ferrari marketing honcho Dany Bahar manned the helm. In spite of promises of funding, the team at Hethel lurched through years of corporate drama and dire finances until Geely took over in 2017. The latest Elan whispers sketch a convertible targeting the Porsche 718 Boxster - Lotus in general has Porsche in its sights. The car pictured above is from the first re-animation of the Elan badge, from 1989 to 1995. A coming Elan would sit above the Elise in the lineup, with more space, amenities, and luxury, at the same time as it would focus on being the lightest and most agile in the segment. Before that arrives, however, Lotus needs to finish developing the sports car platform that will help carry the brand's new range for the next decade; The Lotus SUV uses Volvo's SPA architecture that carries the XC90 and XC60. CEO Phil Popham's Vision-80 program — which now seeks to grow annual volume not merely triple but six-fold to 10,000 cars by 2029 — will be centered around the multi-material architecture that replaces the Elise and Evora architectures presently employed. Due in two years, the rivet-bonded "alloy-core" chassis will likely include carbon fiber and other advanced materials.

Lotus Type 133 / Envya spy photos show it in thin camouflage

Mon, Feb 27 2023

Lotus's upcoming electric sedan, codenamed Type 133 and potentially named Envya, has been caught in spy photos once again, and this time we get an impressively clear look thanks to thin, branded camouflage. It looks as long and slinky as ever, and design elements from the Lotus Eletre electric SUV are obvious. It also looks as though it's closely related to the Polestar 5 sedan. The nose of the Type 133 is a near note-for-note remake of the Eletre's, but significantly lower and flatter. Frankly, it's a much better execution of the design to these eyes. It has the split headlights and the hexagonal active grille shutters like the SUV, too. Close examination also shows that the upper headlights consist of two scowling lenses on each side, with the upper ones obscured by vinyl camoflage. The low nose rises quickly over a short hood into the long, raked roofline that continues right through to the tail. The Type 133 is absolutely a modern fastback-type sedan, and likely features a hatchback. At the leading edge of the roof, there's a sensor that's presumably for advanced driver aids, and is one of the signs that this car likely is closely related to the Polestar 5, which was previewed with a similar sensor. Around at the back, the Type 133's details are harder to see due to the final taillights not being installed. But it does appear to be getting full-width units, and there are some diffuser-like details in the rear bumper. Besides that aforementioned sensor, the whole car's shape, size and proportions look extremely close to the Polestar 5's and those of the Precept concept that previewed the Polestar. The low nose, long roof, roof sensor, flush door handles, they're all very similar. And with Geely owning both brands, it's not really a surprise. The same electric platform from the Eletre is likely powering the Type 133, and power could range from 595 to 893 horsepower. Battery packs could range from 92- to 120-kWh. With how finished and thinly disguised this prototype is, we think the Type 133 could be revealed sometime this year, possibly going on sale next year.  Related Video:
