This is a classic British Lotus Elan +2 that is in great condition and completely drivable. It looks great, runs and drives great, has a fabulous interior and is generally in very good condition. This Lotus twin cam engine is the desirable Weber head with 2 DCOE 40mm carburetors. This also means that this car doesn't have the slightly awkward looking square bulge on the bonnet that the later cars had to clear their Stromberg carbs.
The chassis is in excellent condition. I can't find any rust or problems at all other than minor surface rust. Underneath the car looks very clean. The glassfibre body is also in excellent condition with no signs of accident damage or repair. I was told it was re-sprayed around 12 years ago but then sat unattended for a long time. It has quite a few small chips and touch ups in the paint, There is one large chip (about 1 1/2") just ahead of the boot where I'm told something fell on it while it was stored. Also there is a couple odd discoloured spots on the left front wing (see picture). Despite the flaws the car shines nice and still looks terrific. The re-paint was very thorough and under the hood looks very clean and nice and the door jambs are also very clean. The Glass is all excellent, all the seals are nice. The doors fit great and don't droop. The chrome front bumper is very nice but the rear has some flaking and rust spots. The Tyres are brand new Fisk classics. it has a good spare and the special tool needed for the center hub nut. The vacuum operated headlamps work great and this car uses vacuum to raise the lamps rather than the other way around like the later cars. The benefit being that the lamps stay down when the car is parked. Inside the boot (trunk) is very clean with all its carpet and plywood sub floor intact. The Interior is excellent. The wood dash is amazingly nice. This car has the nice early style dash with toggle switches rather than the federally imposed rocker switches. The dash top and trim pieces are all present and in great condition. The seats are all excellent front and back. The front seats are the earlier low back seats which means unlike the later style they can tilt forward without hitting the ceiling and you can actually get in the back. The carpets are great. The headliner too is excellent as are the door panels. The seat belts have been updated to something more modern and work perfect and are quite comfortable. It's missing the lenses for the two rear interior lamps but they do work. All the gauges and warning lamps work and amazingly it still has its original radio that still works! It also still has its original Colin Chapman signature steering wheel in beautiful condition. The heater controls all work perfect and this car has astoundingly good heat and defrost. The suspension is excellent. The steering is tight and precise. The brakes work perfect. The brake booster has been removed but this lightweight car really doesn't need it. This car has single circuit brakes so it only had one booster. The engine has good power and runs very nice. It idles nice and smooth. The cooling system works excellent and it has the early wider radiator (later cars rad is much smaller). The water pump was recently rebuilt (a common problem and a big job on the twin cam) It doesn't leak any fluids but it does burn a little oil and occasionally is a bit smokey usually when cold or when accelerating away hard from a stop. Twin cams have a reputation for this. It isn't terrible but it isn't perfect either. The oil pressure is great. The clutch is a bit abrupt to release but works great, just takes a bit of getting used to. The 4 speed gearbox is absolutely excellent with no issues at all. There are no drips or problems from the differential. The rubber donuts (rotoflex couplings) in the rear axles look a bit old but still function well. It can be a bit cold blooded to start on cold days but not hard once you learn the routine. It does have working chokes. The exhaust is in great shape, It has a sporty sounding glass pack muffler that some might find too loud but can easily be replaced. The 12V negative earth electrics are in very good order. All the lights, wipers, horn and even the glove box light works! The charging system has been upgraded to a modern internally regulated and cheap to replace GM alternator. It is not currently licensed but it does come with a clear title. Overall this is a great car in very good condition. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. If you'd like to chat on the phone send me a message and I'll give you my number. I highly recommend and encourage a personal inspection if possible. The Elan can be viewed by appointment in Granite Falls WA (near Seattle). Buyer is responsible for shipping costs and arrangements. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. Lotus offers Exige S Roadster for sale, but not in North America
Thu, 23 May 2013The first thing you need to know is that this is the Lotus Exige S Roadster, unchanged from the Exige S even in price and officially the fastest convertible Lotus has ever made. The second thing you need to know is that if you live in the US, you won't be getting this car.
Now that that's out of the way, the lack of a roof, rear wing and front splitter help make it 22 pounds lighter than the coupe, coming in a 2,565 pounds, and the supercharged 3.5-liter V6 in this topless blossom discharges 345 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. For historical comparison with a non-convertible, those numbers nearly match the 2004 Lotus Esprit V8 Final Run edition - which had twin Garrett turbochargers. Yet the Exige S gets from a stoplight to 60 miles per hour in 3.8 seconds, nearly a full second quicker than that Esprit. Fair play, though, the Esprit did weigh 3,040 pounds.
It will be fitted with a six-speed manual only, and cost 52,900 pounds ($79,667 US), 55,378 euros ($71,404 US) or 8,500,000 yen ($82,078 US), depending on where you live. Here in the US we'll be sticking with the track-only Exige V6 Cup and Cup R models. The press release below offers more on the fine points.
Renault will buy back Lotus F1 Team
Wed, Sep 30 2015Renault's relationship with Red Bull may be about to crumble, but the French automaker isn't calling it quits on Formula One altogether. Instead, Renault will cease being an engine supplier and instead acquire Lotus F1 to become a full-fledged manufacturer and team owner again. The long-anticipated deal will see Renault re-acquire the team currently known as Lotus F1 from present owner Genii Capital, an investment fund. Renault owned the team outright before selling it to Genii back in 2009. This move will see the Enstone outfit move back under Renault's roof – and hopefully get more resources than Genii could muster. Renault recently had to come to the team's rescue after an outstanding tax bill threatened to send it into bankruptcy. The deal will likely mean the end of the Lotus name in F1 once again, after the rights were hotly contested between this team and the now-departed Caterham outfit. The Enstone-based outfit will become Renault's principal team, just as Mercedes and Ferrari run their own teams and also supply engines to others. Over its various eras of ownership, the team has shown that it has what it takes to win, given the right drivers and resources. The question is whether Renault can get its engines up to speed again to catch up to its rivals. The partnership between Daimler and the Renault Nissan Alliance created speculation that the two could strike a deal in F1 as well that could see Renault running Mercedes engines in the future - just like the Lotus team currently does. F1 : SIGNATURE OF A LETTER OF INTENT BETWEEN RENAULT GROUP AND GRAVITY MOTORSPORTS S.A.R.L Renault Group and Gravity Motorsports S.a.r.l., an affiliate of Genii Capital SA, are pleased to announce the signature of a Letter of Intent regarding the potential acquisition by Renault of a controlling stake in Lotus F1 Team Ltd. The signature of this Letter of Intent marks Renault's first step towards the project of a Renault Formula 1 team from the 2016 racing season thereby extending 38 years of commitment of the brand to world's premier motorsport championship series. Renault Group and Gravity will work together in the coming weeks to eventually turn this initial undertaking into a definitive transaction provided all terms and conditions are met between them and other interested parties. This might be a Lotus SUV test mule
Mon, Jun 24 2019These photos could be our first look at the Lotus SUV in test mule form. The body on the chassis is clearly that of a Lynk and Co. 01 SUV, but the underpinnings are something different entirely. Perhaps the most telling bit of all is the location in which our spy shooter caught the vehicle. We're told that this was shot dangerously close to Lotus' headquarters in Hethel, England. Using a Lynk and Co. body to test the Lotus SUV makes sense when you take into account who owns both companies. Geely happens to own Lotus, Lynk and Co. and Volvo, so they're all under the same roof at this point. These spy photos appear to be hiding a chassis that doesn't exactly fit correctly under the body, though. The front fenders are far wider than they are on the 01, and the rear fenders also look like they've been messed with to fit the much larger rubber. It has a wider, more aggressive stance than the Lynk and Co. SUV, lending more evidence to this being a Lotus SUV test mule. We'd expect a Lotus SUV to handle as well as anything in the class, so all these things do make sense if that's what it is. As for what could be powering the British SUV, that's another story. This tester has yellow caution tape covering where the gas cap is on the 01 SUV, no visible exhaust and a big, yellow high voltage sticker on the windshield. All of that tells us it's most likely electrified in some form. We didn't have intel that the Lotus SUV would be electric previously, but there's every chance they could go down that road. The Lotus 130 hypercar is going to be all-electric. And Volvo sells plug-in hybrids now, so the tech could be borrowed from there, too. Of course, Volvo doesn't have the same priorities as Lotus does with weight reduction and handling, so don't consider anything a done deal quite yet. We can't actually confirm that the vehicle in question is a Lotus underneath, but hopefully more photos and information make their way to us soon. There's still a long way to go in the development process if Lotus is only testing on mules now, so look for plenty more to come on this vehicle.
