Originally owned by Lotus Elan Expert and Specialist Don Tingle of Tingle Lotus Center, in Cambridge, Mass is this 1968 Lotus Elan S3 SE (Special Equipment Model) Roadster (Drop Head Coupe). It is Chassis # 45/6460, with engine # LP 6989 which is Matching to the Chassis. The car came standard with electric windows (work perfectly). Over the years Don Tingle improved and modified the car so it would not only be stronger, but highly competitive, as well. Items improved are:
A new, gusseted chassis (10 years ago)
Solid rear axles
Custom Isky cams
Webers
Exhaust headers
Oil cooler and aeroquip oil lines
Competition shocks
Momo steering wheel
Roll bar
The engine puts out 155 HP. The car was campaigned in local sports car events throughout the years Don Tingle owned it. Don Tingle fully maintained the car, even after he parted with it, as the full box of records (included with the sale of the car) indicate. Approximately $40,000.00 in receipts from Don Tingles shop were collected by the fellow Don sold the car to. Local to Cambridge, Mass sports car enthusiast, George Zahakevich purchased the car from Don Tingle and continued to campaign the Elan in sports car events. 10 years ago George had Don Tingle rebuild the engine, transmission, the solid mounted rear end and service everything else (as the records show). George put 2,000 miles on the car during his ownership and stated that the car had 13,000 original miles on it when he purchased it. Making for a total of 15,000 miles. The speedometer is working and the odometer is not. The Florida title shows 2,244 miles and the cars odometer shows 2,245 miles.
George moved to Florida and his health began to fail. The car was parked about 5 years ago and sat. George had intended to replace and repair the items that needed attention. These items are:
The seats covers need to be replaced (new original type upholstery, black are included)
The carpet is not in the car (new original type carpet, black are included)
The car should be repainted (paint crazing and chips, as well a small repairs that have been done around the trunk hinge area need sanded and resprayed)
There is a 5 square inch area on the lower left side of the windshield that is de-laminated
The windshield gasket and the door gaskets should be replaced
There is a new dash board (already installed), A new glove box and glove box door, new head light rings, new interior windshield trim pieces, a new center console and a arm rest pad are included with the car. A new starter was install within the month. The original radio is also included.
Missing are the SE badges, one interior door handle trim ring, one tag light, four wheel trim rings and a few roof frame cover buttons.
The top is in good overall condition and quite usable. The body is very straight and solid (even the floors). The wheels are not bend, but do have scratches from the trim rings that were once applied to them. The wheels should be repainted. The tires are period correct Michelin XAS's and have plenty of tread, (as shown in the photo). Since I have owned the car I have been able to get the engine running, the brakes work properly and the transmission shifts fine, with no crunching or grinding. No unusual noises from the rear end. I am in the midst of trying to separate the clutch disc from the flywheel. It is a standard issue with these cars, when sitting for a period of time.
With very little effort this wonderful Elan can be made to be quite presentable and it will have remarkable performance capabilities. With provenance, this 1968 Lotus Elan S3 SE is available at NO RESERVE for a staring bid of $18,000.00

Radford Type 62-2 John Player Special takes the coach-built sports car even higher

Wed, Sep 8 2021

Radford revealed its Type 62-2 a month ago, and today the coach-building company is releasing its first 62-2 variant. It’s simply called the JPS, short for John Player Special. YouÂ’d be able to guess that just by looking at the car, though, as itÂ’s completely done up in the traditional John Player Special black and gold livery. This JPS Type 62-2 isnÂ’t just a livery either. ItÂ’s the most extreme version of the car, even more so than the Gold Leaf version of the standard Radford that improves matters over the “Classic” model. Engine output sees a sharp turn upwards from 500 horsepower to 600 horsepower in the JPS. ItÂ’s still using the 3.5-liter supercharged V6 youÂ’d find in the Lotus Evora (an engine Lotus borrows from Toyota), but this one is heavily modified. Radford says it uses upgraded pistons, new connecting rods, camshafts and an upgraded supercharger. Plus, itÂ’s running a more aggressive engine calibration. Hauling it to a stop are upgraded brakes — Radford uses carbon ceramic rotors and AP calipers. New and larger carbon composite wheels (18-inch front and 19-inch rear) from Dymag are fitted and wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Plenty of appearance and aero changes are made to separate the JPS from the other Type 62-2s. Radford says itÂ’s either lightly massaged or made big changes to every area of the bodywork. YouÂ’ll notice a giant new splitter up front, larger side air intakes to cool the more powerful engine and a more extreme diffuser in back to produce more downforce. WeÂ’ll also note that the JPS “livery” is not a sticker package; itÂ’s all painted on, requiring hours and hours of work by hand. Pricing for the JPS hasnÂ’t been revealed, but itÂ’s guaranteed to be expensive. This special model will be sliced out of the total production of Type 62-2s. Only 12 of the 62 total cars will be the John Player Special cars, so theyÂ’ll be incredibly rare — Radford says itÂ’s currently taking build slot applications, so you still have a shot at buying one. If you want to see the JPS in person, Radford says it will be on display at this yearÂ’s Goodwood Revival. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. Elise Time Attack could be most extreme Lotus yet

Mon, 07 Jul 2014

The Lotus Elise has given birth to some seriously fast and varied machinery. Aside from Lotus' own models like the Exige, 2-Eleven, 340R and Europa, electric vehicles like the Tesla Roadster, not to mention the never-released Dodge Circuit and Detroit Electric SP:01, are all based on the Elise's platform. As were/are the Melkus RS 2000, the Opel Speedster/Vauxhall VX220 and the Hennessey Venom GT. But this could be the most extreme use of the lightweight chassis yet.
This Series 1 Elise has been built by one performance-obsessed Brit with a single purpose: to compete in the UK's Time Attack championship. For those unfamiliar, Time Attack is something like a rally or a hillclimb event, only it takes place on a racing circuit. Each vehicle goes out on the track by itself and sets the best time it can, without needing to worry about other competitors until the finish line is crossed and it's the next racer's turn. That's what drove Lee to modify his Lotus so thoroughly, with more wings, diffusers, flaps and carbon fiber than a Boeing factory. Check it out in the video below.

Lotus marks 20 years of the Elise

Thu, Mar 19 2015

Lotus was a very different company 20 years ago. For starters, it wasn't owned by the Malaysians: it had just been sold by General Motors to Romano Artioli, the same man behind the revival of Bugatti EB110. It had discontinued the Elan, Excel and Carlton, which left the Esprit – by then already 20 years old itself – as its only product. Then the Elise came along and everything changed. The Elise arrived in 1995, based on a lightweight aluminum chassis that was ahead of its time and cloaked in composite body panels to make it incredibly light in the spirit of Colin Chapman's ethos. Its name was taken from Artioli's granddaughter, but stuck around long after he sold the company. The Esprit was eventually retired, and with the exception of the Evora, the Elise served as the basis for every other new Lotus that has followed in the two decades since: the Exige, Europa, 2-Eleven, 340R, and so on. It even lent its underpinnings to a wide array of sports cars for other automakers, including the groundbreaking Tesla Roadster, the all-conquering Hennessey Venom GT, the Opel Speedster/Vauxhall VX220, and more concepts cars and niche products than we can count. Now 20 years since its introduction, Lotus is celebrating the milestone with the Elise 20th Anniversary Edition. It's based on (and effectively replaces) the Elise S Club Racer, and trims a further 22 pounds off the curb weight. It's got matte black forged wheels and trim, a retrimmed interior and of course all the special badging. UK customers will be able to pick one up for GBP39,900, but as the Elise hasn't been offered Stateside in a few years now, we'll just have to admire – and celebrate – from afar. Lotus Elise celebrates 20 years - Celebratory 20th Anniversary Special Edition Elise - Special edition, based on the Elise S Club Racer, including classic Elise colour schemes - Pioneering and iconic Elise continues to innovate and evolve - Weight reduced by 10 kg The Lotus Elise 20th Anniversary Special Edition celebrates the unveiling of the iconic sports car at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1995. 20 years ago, the Lotus Elise revolutionised the sports car world, setting the benchmark for handling, purity of the driving experience, lightweight and efficiency. Its pioneering and advanced bonded aluminium chassis was a market-leading technological innovation at the time and over the years has improved and evolved and remains core to the Elise's exceptional performance today.
