1968 Lotus Elan S3 Se Special Equipment Ex Don Tingle Vintage Classic Race on 2040-cars
No Reserve Auction
Originally owned by Lotus Elan Expert and Specialist Don Tingle of Tingle Lotus Center, in Cambridge, Mass is this 1968 Lotus Elan S3 SE (Special Equipment Model) Roadster (Drop Head Coupe). It is Chassis # 45/6460, with engine # LP 6989 which is Matching to the Chassis. The car came standard with electric windows (work perfectly). Over the years Don Tingle improved and modified the car so it would not only be stronger, but highly competitive, as well. Items improved are: A new, gusseted chassis (10 years ago) Solid rear axles Custom Isky cams Webers Exhaust headers Oil cooler and aeroquip oil lines Competition shocks Momo steering wheel Roll bar The engine puts out 155 HP. The car was campaigned in local sports car events throughout the years Don Tingle owned it. Don Tingle fully maintained the car, even after he parted with it, as the full box of records (included with the sale of the car) indicate. Approximately $40,000.00 in receipts from Don Tingles shop were collected by the fellow Don sold the car to. Local to Cambridge, Mass sports car enthusiast, George Zahakevich purchased the car from Don Tingle and continued to campaign the Elan in sports car events. 10 years ago George had Don Tingle rebuild the engine, transmission, the solid mounted rear end and service everything else (as the records show). George put 2,000 miles on the car during his ownership and stated that the car had 13,000 original miles on it when he purchased it. Making for a total of 15,000 miles. The speedometer is working and the odometer is not. The Florida title shows 2,244 miles and the cars odometer shows 2,245 miles. George moved to Florida and his health began to fail. The car was parked about 5 years ago and sat. George had intended to replace and repair the items that needed attention. These items are: The seats covers need to be replaced (new original type upholstery, black are included) The carpet is not in the car (new original type carpet, black are included) The car should be repainted (paint crazing and chips, as well a small repairs that have been done around the trunk hinge area need sanded and resprayed) There is a 5 square inch area on the lower left side of the windshield that is de-laminated The windshield gasket and the door gaskets should be replaced There is a new dash board (already installed), A new glove box and glove box door, new head light rings, new interior windshield trim pieces, a new center console and a arm rest pad are included with the car. A new starter was install within the month. The original radio is also included. Missing are the SE badges, one interior door handle trim ring, one tag light, four wheel trim rings and a few roof frame cover buttons. The top is in good overall condition and quite usable. The body is very straight and solid (even the floors). The wheels are not bend, but do have scratches from the trim rings that were once applied to them. The wheels should be repainted. The tires are period correct Michelin XAS's and have plenty of tread, (as shown in the photo). Since I have owned the car I have been able to get the engine running, the brakes work properly and the transmission shifts fine, with no crunching or grinding. No unusual noises from the rear end. I am in the midst of trying to separate the clutch disc from the flywheel. It is a standard issue with these cars, when sitting for a period of time. With very little effort this wonderful Elan can be made to be quite presentable and it will have remarkable performance capabilities. With provenance, this 1968 Lotus Elan S3 SE is available at NO RESERVE for a staring bid of $18,000.00 Sold as is and void of any warranty. Genii capitalizing on Lotus F1 tech with new sports car?
Fri, 24 Jan 2014Detractors will tell you that there's little to be applied from Formula One racing to the cars we drive, but what about the cars most of us could only dream of driving? We're talking about supercars from the likes of Ferrari and McLaren - two hugely successful F1 racing teams that have successfully made the transition into building exotic sports cars for the road. And soon there may be one more.
That would be the Lotus F1 Team, which is rumored to be working on a sports car project of its own. Now we know what you might be thinking: Lotus already makes sports cars. Indeed they do, only the F1 team has nothing more to do with the automaker behind the Exige and Evora than the name they share. Today the team (formerly known as Toleman, Benetton and Renault) is owned by Genii Capital, whose chairman Gerald Lopez recently confirmed the rumors to Auto Motor und Sport: "We are going to develop a carbon chassis for a sports car that can be built in large quantities.... But this has nothing to do with Formula 1."
With little to nothing in the way of details available, the circulating rumors had tied the venture to on-again, off-again Italian auto marque De Tomaso. But our source at ATS (which recently bought the rights to the De Tomaso name following Gian Mario Rossignolo's aborted attempt to revive it) firmly denied the prospect of any such collaboration. Spokesmen for the Lotus F1 Team would not divulge any information; neither would the press office for parent company Genii Capital, leaving the door wide open to speculation once again.
What has Lotus got in store for us in Geneva?
Tue, Jan 20 2015In its latest announcement, Lotus has reported a substantial increase in sales over the past nine months of this fiscal year to date. That's good news for the once troubled niche automaker, but the interesting part was hidden further down the release. After detailing the jump in sales by 54 percent worldwide, Lotus announced that it "is revealing an exciting new car at the important Geneva International Motor Show in early March 2015." While little in the way of details were confirmed, the company said that "the product will remain true to its core pillars of lightness, performance and driving purity by embodying all of them in a most desirable package." Sounds pretty Lotus-like to us, but just what form it will take remains to be seen. Given that the Malaysian-owned British automaker has scrapped all of its ambitious new projects, the overwhelming likelihood is that whatever it is preparing to reveal in Geneva will be based on one of its existing models: the Elise, Exige or Evora. The last we heard, Hethel was planning a revision to the Evora, convertible and even crossover versions of the same, as well as an even more hard-core version of the Exige to take the place of the extreme 2-Eleven track car. The announcement refers to the Elise S Cup that was the company's most recent reveal, but seems to indicate that the Geneva show car will be something different. 19 January 2015 Lotus sales up 54% world-wide for the first nine months of the financial year ท 81% sales increase EU overall ยท 88% increase in UK ยท 143% increase in France ยท 139% increase in Germany ยท 29% up USA; 50% up Canada ยท 24% up Asia and Middle East ยท 130% sales increases in China; 125% in Japan ยท Lotus Motorsport shows 19% increase ยท 163 dealers, 25 more than nine months ago, 50 more in pipeline by the end of 2015. ยท Exciting reveal in Geneva Announcing that overall sales are up by 54% in the past nine months provides tangible proof that the forward strategy established by Lotus Cars is working. In volume terms, the increase of 551 cars over the previous year, to a total of 1,565, is an excellent result for the British sports car maker. Lotus has enlarged and strengthened its representation globally, with 25 new dealers enrolled across a number of territories in the past nine months, with another 50 new dealers joining Lotus by the end of 2015.
Lotus and Proton might be sold to Peugeot-Citroen after Geely bails
Wed, Mar 22 2017Despite some strong initial interest, Chinese automaker Geely changed its mind about purchasing a controlling stake in Proton, parent company of Lotus Cars. This leaves Groupe PSA, owner of Peugeot, Citroen, and now Opel, as the sole remaining interested party. This is mixed news for Proton, as Geely's hands-off, cash-flush approach may have helped Lotus. On the other hand, it isn't like Groupe PSA is bordering on bankruptcy. According to Malaysian automotive news site Paultan.org, the reasons behind Geely's change of heart are unclear. In fact, it may seem that the indecision about the deal may have been coming more from Proton, not Geely. Reports say that Proton's parent company, Malaysian manufacturer DRB-Hicom, was uneasy about the potential partnership. DRB-Hicom assembles cars for a number of automakers, including Honda, Isuzu, and Suzuki. A deal with Groupe PSA would give the French automaker access to both DRB-Hicom's facilities and an expanded foothold in Southeast Asia. As only one contender remains, look for news of the deal going one way or another in the next few months. Related Video: News Source: Paultan Lotus Citroen Peugeot Geely groupe psa
