Commemorative Edition 1988 Lotus Esprit Turbo - 1988 on 2040-cars
Scarsdale, New York, United States
A rare opportunity to own number 36 of 87 Limited Edition Lotus Esprit Turbos produced in 1988 to commemorate 40 years of Achievement at Lotus.
A huge Lotus fan, having owned an Elise and an Exige. I purchased this vehicle wanting to make it into a show car. The car has a tremendous amount of potential, but needs proper care and attention. Due to an unfortunate family matter, I cannot spend the time on it. But am excited for somebody else to do. It truly deserves a person and home to return it to realize it's potential. One can look up this Limited edition on Barrett-Jackson Auction and they sell quite well. A recent example sold for $38,500. (One can do a search on Barrett-Jackson under these vehicles and you will see 3 or 4 that have sold over the last 5 to 6 years.) The status of the car is as follows: It starts up with no issues. It does require a new battery. I used a jumper when starting it. It begins to smoke after a few minutes. Some work likely needs to be done on the engine. My (master mechanic) who worked my Lotus Elise, and Lotus Exige, says the car doesn't require a lot but it does need some attention. I have video clips of the car starting and the engine running. I can send those. The paint as you can see is pretty good. There are areas where the clear coat is peeling. Not sure it requires a respray. I really good detail, and a clear coat may make it look like it was straight from the factor. I haven't gotten it looked at by a body shop. The interior is also in ok condition. There are areas where the adhesive needs to be reapplied. It requires some care and attention, but it would come out looking quite good. Somebody with some time, a bit of 'know how' could make this a thing of beauty. I purchased a Certificate of Provenance from Lotus. That of course would come with the car. I have included an excerpt below. I also have the original window sticker. (Listed for just over $70,000.) When I bought it, I also purchased some extra parts. I will list those below. Those who know the Esprits know that these are valuable parts. As I want the car to go to a good home, and I don't have the time to dedicate to it, I am not asking a single dollar over what I paid for it. As mentioned, I have also not begun to do work on the car, or put additional parts into it. I have seen many seller want to get the value of the time, effort, energy, labor and parts they put into this car. This is not the case. I am asking for simply the purchase price. It comes with a clear carfax, and I will pay to have it detailed before being shipped or picked up by you. In it's current state, it does start, and the electronics function, but it does not run. (As I haven't done anything do the vehicle since I bought it.) I have been told that it would not take much to get it going. In full candor, I simply don't have the opportunity to focus on it. The car is sold as is, and I encourage people, if possible, to come and take a look at it. Extra Parts, followed by the excerpt of the certificate of provenance. Please call or write with any questions. Also look at my feedback on eBay: Parts: Lotus Car Dust Cover Braided Metal Clutch Line Braided Brake Lines x6 Rear hub bearings x2 Poly Bushings Coilover kit Exterior Handles x3 pieces Extra Lotus Steering Wheel with accessories ------------------------------------------------------------ Thank you for your enquiry regarding your Lotus Esprit Commemorative Edition and please find enclosed your Certificate of Provenance, which provides details from the original build records when the car left the factory. The VIN supplied for your Lotus Esprit was SCCFC20A8JHF62304 which can be broken down into the manufacturer identifier code (SCC=UK manufacturer, Lotus Cars Ltd.), the model type {F=Esprit Turbo), the series (C=series 3), the ventilation option (2=heater and air conditioning), the engine type (0=type 910, 2.2 turbocharged), the restraint system (A=active belts), the check digit (8), the mode! year (J=1988), the assembly plant (H=Hethel), the market the chassis is made for (F=USA 50 states), the market the engine was made for (6=USA 50 states, Canada & Japan) and the serial number (2304). The original engine number was LP910 8804 24874 which can be broken down into the market the engine is destined for (L=USA 50 states, Canada & Japan), the engine equipment (P=high compression with A/C), the engine type
{910=Lotus 2.2 litre turbocharged), the engine build date (8804=1988, April), and the engine serial number (24874). The transaxle number was C5234. The original body colour was pearlescent white, Lotus paint code P02. The interior was trimmed in limited edition light and dark blue leather with grey pigskin inserts and indigo blue carpets. As the car was a limited edition, the car came comprehensively equipped including the following: strut mounted rear spoiler, removable glass panel roof, unique trim, pearlescent white all over (including body coloured sills and wheels), Sony I.C.E., illumination instruments changed from green to orange to match the I.C.E. system, polished wood (elm) instrument binnacle surrounds and Stirling silver fascia plaque. The car was signed from production on the 12th May 1988. The car was imported into the USA by Lotus Cars USA Inc. who would retain any further history. They have informed me that the selling dealer was Jim Marino Imports Inc. in Alhambra, CA who sold it to a customer in Los Angeles, CA on the 24th October 1988. The 1988 model year was the first for the new Peter Stevens designed body. The Commemorative model was to mark Forty Years of Achievement at Lotus 1948-1988 and the only colour available was pearlescent white, there was meant to be 88, but I have only found records for 87 of them. The 1988 model year ran from serial number 2000 (October 1987) to 2479 (September 1988) with the serial number sequence being shared with the USA, Canada and Japan markets, so for clarification the following is based on serial number sequence and data available to date for the US 1988 model year cars only; Your car is the 262nd out of 395 cars (including 87 Commemorative models). Your car is the 44th out of 88 cars in Pearl White (first engineering car was also in pearl white). Your car is the 43rd out of 87 Commemorative cars recorded. This differs from the edition number displayed on the window sticker which shows your car was number 36 of 88 cars as these are allocated independently from production and do not follow serial number sequence. |

Lotus pumps Exige up to 430 horsepower
Thu, Nov 9 2017It seems that every few months or so Lotus has yet another lighter, faster version of one of its cars, usually with an emphasis on the lighter part. This time, the latest, fastest Lotus gets a big bump in power. It's the Lotus Exige Cup 430, and it shares its supercharged V6 with the recently launched Evora GT430. That means it makes 430 horsepower, an impressive 55 more than the 375-horsepower Exige Cup 380. It also produces 325 pound-feet of torque. That engine is impressive enough in the Evora GT430, but it becomes pretty breathtaking in the Exige, which weighs about 2,410 pounds. Though that's slightly heavier than the Cup 380, the overall power-to-weight ratio has improved, and Lotus says the 430 can fly to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds from a standstill. It also boasts a higher top speed than the 380, at 180 mph, which is 5 mph more than the 380. Perhaps more impressive is the fact the Exige Cup 430 is the fastest road car Lotus has tested at its Hethel race track, beating the track-oriented 3-Eleven road car by 1.2 seconds. Among the other interesting features of the Exige Cup 430 are the three-way adjustable shocks as well as adjustable front and rear anti-roll bars. More of the car's total downforce, 45 percent to be precise, acts on the front now, compared with 36 percent on the Cup 380. Four-piston brake calipers are used at each corner. It also comes with a number of weight-saving features as standard, including the lithium-ion battery and titanium exhaust. It can also be optioned to be a legitimate race car with an FIA-legal roll bar and airbag delete. But just the stock car isn't cheap. It has three different price tags depending on whether you purchase it in the U.K., Germany, or France. But the cheapest price in dollars comes from the U.K. where it retails for GBP99,800, or just shy of $131,000 at current exchange rates. Lotus runs the Emira hard - and sideways - on track
Mon, Dec 20 2021Lotus sent Gavin Kershaw – the British automaker's attributes and product integrity director – out on track with an Emira and a camera crew. In between reminding us that manual transmissions are wonderful and getting the Emira increasingly sideways, Kershaw's job was to explain how the last ICE-powered Lotus is still a Lotus. In this extended teaser, Kershaw offers us a look at a fresh new tidbit, that being the car's four driving modes. "Tour" mode will handle everyday driving, programmed for "maximum stability and control." "Sport" does what we all expect "Sport" to do, tightening responses and loosening slip angles. "Race" opens up even more slip angle, and changes the gauge cluster to display racy dials like the performance tachometer. Then there's the wonderfully named "Fully Off," which shuts down every nanny save the ABS. And remember, the Emira will be offered with two suspensions, either standard Tour or stiffer Sport, and will only come with hydraulic steering. Sounds like Lotus has delivered on its quest to make the Emira "for the drivers." The engine in the V6 First Edition is the same Toyota-sourced supercharged 3.5-liter V6 found in the Evora, producing 400 horsepower and 310 or 317 pound-feet of torque depending on transmission — the automatic gets the greater torque, but why would you do that? This one comes just about fully loaded, graced with the Driver's Pack, Lower Black Pack, Design Pack, and Convenience Pack, plus optional 20-inch wheels with diamond-cut two-tone finish and two-piece brake discs with branded calipers. It won't cost anything to swap the wheels for silver or black versions. The only other big-time options we know about so far are the $1,400 Extended Black Pack, which adds more black accents in places like the roof, mirror caps, and exhaust finishers, and the $2,150 six-speed automatic to replace the six-speed manual. Next year's base model will run with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder procured from AMG, producing 360 hp and shifting through a dual-clutch transmission. While you wait, the Emira V6 First Edition configurator is online and ready for flights of fancy. To get in one when they begin arriving Stateside, the V6 First Edition opens up the bidding in early 2022 at $93,900. Late 2022 brings a base four-cylinder Emira that starts at $74,900. Neither of those prices includes destination. Related Video This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences.
Lotus Exige Sport 410 Quick Spin Review | An unobtainable gem previews an American future
Tue, May 15 2018HETHEL, England — You can get the measure of a car brand by the environment in which its products are built. The narrow, bumpy, hedge-lined lanes of eastern England explain a lot about the way a Lotus goes. The character of a company's chief speaks to the brand's intentions as well. Jean-Marc Gales has been portrayed unflatteringly as a Eurocrat bean counter, but his approach has been to strip weight and cost out of the product to the benefit of performance on both track and bottom line, defining brand attributes that Chinese money can hopefully bring to a wider audience. He drives fast, thinks quickly and acts without hesitation. You sense he likes people who do the same, and the speed with which Autoblog posted the story announcing the new Exige Sport 410 is something he commented upon in flattering terms. Despite the fact that it'll never appear on American dealer lots, Gales made us very welcome at the factory to drive it. A quick update on where the Exige is at since it was last seen on American shores in 2011. Though it's still based around what's fundamentally the same extruded and bonded aluminum tub as every other Elise and Exige of the past 20 years, it's gained pounds, cylinders and performance to the point where it shows circuit pace that'll have 911 GT3 owners watching their mirrors. Since going from a 1.8-liter four-cylinder to the Evora-derived 3.5-liter supercharged V6, the Exige has evolved into a proper hot-rod, some way removed from its dainty roots and punching harder with each iteration. And there have been a few. Currently you can buy a Sport 350 or Cup 430 with the uprated, intercooled Evora engine and 430 horsepower, this new Sport 410 related to the latter and benefiting from many of its upgrades but tuned to be more road compliant. And a little cheaper. Unlike the Cup, you can also have it as a roadster, which, in an extreme example of the famed "add lightness" policy, basically equates to removing the roof panel. It's now arguably too much for the local roads, punching hard in angry bursts of acceleration between corners rather than dancing through them. With no power assistance to the steering and fat, grippy Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s, an Exige is a surprisingly physical car to drive, bearing in mind it weighs less than 2,500 pounds. A test track built on runways that once hosted U.S. Air Force B-24 Liberators is a better place to appreciate the Exige's talents.
