1991 Lotus Esprit SE (Special Equipment), Black, 5-speed, Mid-Engine, Turbocharged, Intercooled (Yes, this is the one with the "Chargecooler").  This Lotus was nearly $90k new, and looks like a Lambo--very low (only 44 inches high).  With 264 bhp (280 bhp available on overboost), this supercar was one of the quickest cars in the world in '91 (0-60 mph in 4.5 sec)--even quicker than the Lamborghini Countach and Ferrari Testarossa.

My dad and I have loved the Lotus Esprit SE ever since we saw it featured in the movies (i.e., Pretty Woman & Basic Instinct).  We bought this car with the intention of restoring it completely and keeping it forever.  We were happy to find that spare parts are still readily available and relatively inexpensive (I can provide a list of current parts suppliers, if needed).  The restoration was started as soon as we got it (on a part-time basis) and it's been going great--no major problems whatsoever.  Some family issues have developed recently however, and we've come to the unfortunate conclusion that we will now need to sell the Lotus.

WHERE WE ARE AT NOW:

The engine fires up right away and runs strong with a burst of starting fluid, but we have determined that it will need a fuel pump (available for about $100), and there is a chance that some of the injectors will need to be cleaned or replaced (~$60 ea.) as well, before it can be brought up to operating temperature.  I have not driven the car, so I cannot comment on the condition of the rest of the drivetrain.  However, the previous owner stated that the car was running and driving fine before he took it off the road and stored it.

The body has been prepped some, but it's not quite ready to be painted.  So, it will be sold as is with a satin black primer finish--I actually like this look better than the original shiny black paint.

A lot of effort has gone into restoring the interior as well, but it still needs some work (e.g., seats, dash).  The radio and some other random interior & exterior pieces are missing here and there--but overall, it's is a fairly complete Esprit SE.  The suspension is very tight and solid and the brakes seem to be in working order.  The windshield has a crack and the tires will need to be replaced.

This Esprit has a clean title and comes with an official Certificate of Provenance from Lotus.  This car has a clean Carfax/Autocheck and has never been in an accident.  It is the perfect father/son restoration project, and it won't take much to bring it back to factory condition.  I would suggest to any potential buyers that they come see the car in person...but either way, the high-bidder gets it!  Car is also for sale locally.

The Stig breaks into Lotus F1 HQ

Mon, 16 Jun 2014

As Top Gear's mysterious test driver, The Stig has driven just about everything on wheels - and more than a few things without. But an F1 car? That still remains a rarity, even on Top Gear.
That all changes in this latest promo clip, though. The video shows what happened when his Royal Stigness arrived at the headquarters of the Lotus F1 team in Enstone, England, where he somehow managed to scan his way in past security and got his hands on a Lotus-Renault E21, the V8-powered single-seater that Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean drove in the 2013 Formula One World Championship - and which the Stig will apparently be driving on stage during the upcoming Top Gear Festival in Durban. If you're not heading to South Africa this month, though (or even if you are), you can check out the footage in the video below.

Lotus Motorcycles C-01 now 'ready for the road'

Thu, 20 Feb 2014

When we first laid eyes on leaked images of the Lotus Motorcycles C-01, we wondered if its laid-back, sport cruiser shape was really appropriate for a motorcycle bearing any connection with Colin Chapman and the company's famous "add lightness" mantra. We've now seen official pictures of the bike in multiple color schemes, including classic black and gold, British racing green and even a variant that resembles Martini livery, and while we think it looks pretty cool, our opinion hasn't really changed.
Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that the C-01 isn't an embodiment of the Lotus ethos, as the company that intends to build it isn't really Lotus at all, its builders - German racing firm Kodewa and tuner Holzer Group - merely having licensed the name of the British sportscar maker. It was designed by Daniel Simon, who once worked for Volkswagen and consulted for Bugatti and is the man credited with creating the reborn Tron Light Cycles. Still, looking past its questionable heritage, the C-01 looks pretty darn awesome, and there are some interesting bits that have us looking forward to the production version that's reportedly due within the next two months.
As expected, power comes in at 200 horsepower, courtesy of a modified version of KTM's 1,195-cc V-twin engine. The chassis is made up of steel, titanium and carbon fiber, with a seat height of about 28 inches. Its wheelbase, at about 65 inches, is a full 10 inches longer than a real street-legal superbike, and its front end is raked way out in front with a 19-inch wheel. Those dimensions mean we shouldn't expect much racetrack prowess, unless its rider is only planning on going in a straight line. Indeed, with a claimed dry weight of under 400 pounds, the Lotus Motorcycles C-01 ought to be mighty quick down the quarter mile.

Renault considers fielding its own F1 team again

Wed, Feb 25 2015

Renault has a long history in Formula One, but while it successfully ran its own team until 2010, these days it participates only as an engine supplier – and just to the two Red Bull teams. That could be changing in the near future, though, as the latest reports indicate that the French automaker is considering fielding its own team once again. According to Autosport, the company has ruled out starting its own team again from scratch, but it is weighing the possibility of buying an existing team. The last time it competed was when it took over the championship-winning Benetton team in 2002, building it back up to win back-to-back world titles in 2005 and 2006. It subsequently dropped in form until Renault sold the team in 2011 to Genii Capital, which has run it under the Lotus banner ever since. The Lotus team continued using Renault engines with limited success until this season when it switched to Mercedes. With Caterham now gone from the grid, that leaves Renault with only one customer: Red Bull, which runs both the Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso teams under Renault power. It's a situation in which the French company apparently doesn't particularly revel, leading it to consider buying a team again and running it in-house. Considering the difficulty the Lotus team it once owned has encountered lately, reacquiring its old operation could prove the most logical step for Renault, but of course that doesn't mean that's what it will ultimately do. It could continue strengthening ties with Red Bull until it acquires a large portion of it (or Toro Rosso) – something which Audi is said to be eying as well. Or it could look to another team altogether. Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari and Williams may not be up for sale, but we could easily see Renault taking over cash-strapped Force India or Sauber, or even pouring its resources into getting Caterham or Manor/Marussia back up to speed and whipping it into winning form.
