SELLER REMARKS |

Big American luxury cars of the '70s were unlike anything that came before or since, and the biggest, most luxurious of them all had to be the Lincoln Town Car. By the time this 1979 Town Car was built, Cadillac had already downsized, making it the undisputed champion of the luxury car wars, and with just 58,231 original miles, this is perhaps the most sheetmetal per dollar you'll find anywhere.
Basic white is a fine color on a luxury car, and the all-original finish on this Lincoln shows off what you got for a rather substantial chunk of change in 1979. Finish quality is quite good and for it to look so well-preserved after 35 years is a testament to the car it has received. The long, straight almost gothic lines of the last of the land yachts have aged well and still look attractive today. Traditional Lincoln styling cues abound, including the bright strip of trim that runs along the tops of the fenders and doors, a featured that first showed up with the 1961 Continental. The rubber filler panels for the bumpers remain in very good condition with minimal discoloration, and if you're familiar with these cars, you already know that these parts deteriorate fast if the car is exposed to the elements. The white vinyl top appears to be almost new and might be a replacement, but the overall look is quite uniform, so someone has obviously loved this car. Nice chrome bumpers, a tall, vertical grille, and folding headlights complete the look.
The interior is about the size of a Manhattan starter apartment and as luxurious as a penthouse suite. Blue velour on tufted seats is both durable and comfortable and shows minimal wear. Ornate door panels have controls for the split power front seats, windows, and locks, all framed in fairly convincing faux wood. The weather seals are still supple, so this car seals up like a tomb and just whispers along on the highway, and thick carpets underfoot certainly help with that effect. Other features include automatic climate control, cruise control, automatic dimming headlights, and a rather sophisticated AM/FM/8-track stereo. The back seat has enough room for the starting front line of the LA Lakers and the beautifully finished trunk will carry all their gear and then some.
Ford's 400 cubic inch V8 was the only powerplant available in the Town Car in 1979, and it's a good choice. Smooth, torquey, and almost completely silent, it moves the massive sedan without ever feeling like it's working hard. It's quite original and nicely maintained, with many of the factory markings still visible under the hood. The A/C has been upgraded to modern R134a refrigerant, so it's easy to service in the future and still quite effective, and there are quite a few recent service items visible under the hood. It starts easily and idles so smoothly you'll be tempted to hit the starter again, and the single exhaust system offers just a distant hum to advertise the engine's operation. A 3-speed automatic transmission shifts almost imperceptibly and with towering highway gears in back, this is perhaps the best long-distance cruiser you'll ever drive. Factory alloy wheels remain in excellent shape and carry easy-riding whitewall radials as original.
They called this a "Collectors' Edition" and perhaps its time has come. We'll never see cars like this roaming the highways again, so take advantage of this opportunity to drive America's finest for pennies on the dollar. Call today!

Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued a recall for some 83,250 vehicles in the US, for an issue with halfshafts. More specifically a "halfshaft retention circlip" might not have been properly installed on affected vehicles, with the result being halfshafts that may move improperly or disengage completely from the linkshaft while driving. The NHTSA release also notes that the issue may occur "without prior warning" which obviously factors in to the timeliness of getting this checked.
Should the halfshaft disengage, a few troubling things could happen. If it occurs while driving, power from the engine will no longer be transmitted to the wheels. And, if the vehicle is parked without the parking brake applied after disengagement of the circlip, vehicles may roll away even if they're transmissions have been placed in "Park."
Affected vehicles are as follows: Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossovers from model years 2012 to 2014; Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS sedans from model years 2013 to 2014; Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT vehicles from model years 2013 to 2014.

High-powered sports and luxury cars were everywhere at the New York Auto Show, prompting the obvious question for enthusiasts: How long will this golden age of performance last? Industry leaders have some time before regulations elevate the Corporate Average Fuel Economy level in 2025. Even then, they expect cars rippling with power to survive in some form. "Is it the end of an era," I don't think so," said Ola Kallenius, Daimler AG board member for Mercedes-Benz cars marketing and sales. "That performance element of individual mobility I don't think will ever go away." Kallenius, who oversaw the company's AMG division from 2010-2013, expects it to continue to grow. Last year, AMG sold a record 68,875 units around the world, an increase of 44.6 percent over 2014, with strong growth in the US, China, and Germany. Still, there's always the potential for gas to spike, and pending fuel economy regulations are looming. That could lead AMG to add electrification to its products, Kallenius said, pointing to the electric SLS as a test case. Chevy is also thinking ahead, said Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer of the Camaro. He wouldn't bite when asked about electrification for the Camaro (he did say "never say never"), but admitted in 2025 "it's going to be pretty tough to sell V8s." For now, things are rosy for muscle cars, and Chevy confidently showcased the 640-hp Camaro ZL1 in coupe and convertible form in New York. "I think that this is truly the golden age of performance," Oppenheiser said. It's hard to disagree. News & Analysis News: The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF was a show-stopper in New York. Analysis: There was a palpable energy when this RF — for Retractable Fastback — was revealed the night before the show at a trendy off-site venue near the Hudson River. Even as a parade of SUVs and flashy luxury cars rolled out the rest of the week, the Miata remained a hot topic. The Retractable Fastback is really a clever targa top, with part of the roof stowing behind the seats, adding about 100 pounds compared to the standard convertible. It makes the car more practical and arguably more attractive. The RF continues Mazda's tradition of selling the Miata with a hardtop variant. The first and second generations offered a detachable one, and a power retractable hardtop (a $1,700 option) was available on third-gen models. Judging by its reception in New York, the RF could prove to be even more popular than its predecessors.

The Detroit Auto Show has officially kicked off, as it always does, with the announcement of the North American Car, Utility Vehicle and Truck of the Year winners. For 2018, those are the Honda Accord, Volvo XC60 and Lincoln Navigator, respectively. The Honda Accord beat out two other finalists, the Toyota Camry and the new Kia Stinger. The Accord stood out for its styling, drivability and standard equipment. The Volvo XC60 came out ahead of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Honda Odyssey minivan. It was chosen for its luxury, ride and value when equipped well. The Lincoln Navigator, a heavily updated model that remained true to the concept car on which it was based, beat the Ford Expedition, as well as the only pickup in the list, the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 (which was a finalist for Autoblog's own Technology of the Year Award). NACTOY juror Ron Sessions complimented the "more dramatic update" compared to the Expedition. "With its design now aligned with the Continental, the Navigator becomes an even more important image — and the profit-maker for Lincoln," he said. The NACTOY Awards have been around since 1994. A panel of 60 judges, all automotive journalists, whittle the list down to three finalists in each category before announcing the winners in January. The Utility Vehicle category was added for 2017.
