You are viewing a 1975 Lincoln Mark IV in bullion gold (of course that is not the actual name of the color, but in the sunlight it glows exactly like a bar of gold) with corresponding leather interior. It is a two-owner, 44K mile automobile with a strong 460 cu in motor and all the power accessories, including ice cold A/C. I recently fitted the car with new whitewalls and invested $700 in an extensive tune-up and an A/C service and refresh, so it is absolutely ready to be enjoyed. The second owner purchased it in 1977 and It is unrestored and nearly flawless. I urge anyone serious about acquiring it to come look at it in person; it will astound you. The paintwork is the best I have ever seen and it has to be one of the most impressive Mark IV's in the nation. It is literally the color of a bar of gold. I've included a photo of a brake rotor and caliper I took when the tires were being put on to give you an indication of just how well-preserved this car is in every way. And additionally, I was even able to locate the build sheet less than a week ago, which will allow you to trace the originality of this car much more thoroughly than you otherwise could. Its a heck of a treat to find a piece of documentation on an automobile that has been hidden away and untouched for more than 35 years!
This is by far the most striking Mark Series automobile I've ever seen and I just had to relate this anecdote. On the day that I worked on the photos for this listing I happened to stop in front of a small country church just as the attendees of a Saturday afternoon wedding were exiting the building. The bridal party was moving off towards their cars and the congregation was still miling about and saying their goodbyes on the church steps as I sat at the intersection waiting for traffic to clear. It was a beautiful day -- perfect for the lucky newlyweds or for a cruise in a cool car -- and I was admiring the scenery and the well-dressed paritioners, and pondering the twists of fate that have to this point allowed my to avoid the marital yoke. And just as I was at the peak of my pleasant reverie and preparing to pull away a girl in the bridal party turned and pointed at me in the Mark and said, "Hey look at that car!" Well, apparently everyone was watching the bridal party exit because as if on cue all of the seventy-five or so people turned in unison and watched my slowly drive off. I'd like to think they saw the appearance of a pure gold Lincoln as a sign that the union was charmed. It was a cool moment for a very deserving automobile, because it has been meticulously garage-kept and cloistered for decades, it seemed only right to show it off a bit and let it shine in the afternoon sun. Junkyard Gem: 1978 Lincoln Continental Town Car
Sun, Nov 1 2020Just before Ford downsized the Continental for 1980 and made the Town Car a separate model for 1981, the biggest and plushest new sedan in the Dearborn universe was the mighty Continental Town Car. Here's one from 1978, the second-to-last model year of the two-and-a-half-ton Continental Town Car, found in nice condition in a Denver car graveyard last month. This car rolled out of the Lincoln showroom loaded, with the landau-style "Coach Roof" and just about every additional option. Base price on the 1978 Continental with the Town Car package started at $11,606 (about $48,350 in 2020 dollars), but this car cost much more than that. A new Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost better than twice as much that year (and it was worth it), but you still had to be a heavy-duty high-roller to buy a new '78 Town Car. The base engine in the 1978 Continental was a 400-cubic-inch (6.6-liter) V8 making a grim 166 horsepower, a truly horrific ratio of 25.2 horsepower per liter of displacement (torque came to a respectable 319 lb-ft, though). If the new Navigator got 25.2 horses for each liter in its turbo V6, it would have a mere 88 horsepower to haul its nearly three tons, rather than the 450 horses that 21st-century engine technology gives us. The good news with this car is that it came with the optional 460-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) V8, rated at 210 horsepower and 357 lb-ft. That was sufficient to get this car's 4,660 pounds moving well enough. Still just 28 horses per liter, but a significant upgrade. These cars weren't about performance, however. They were about a silent, cushy ride and poofy seats that swallowed you in velour comfort. When did Detroit stop making these pillow-top seats? And opera lights? And snazzy "coffin-handle" door pulls? Yes, even the wire wheels (a $333 option, or $1,385 today) stayed on this car to the very end. Why get a Rolls-Royce when you could have this, the grille of this behemoth seems to ask us. Though it remained in good condition when it arrived in its final parking space, a Malaise Era Continental sedan just isn't worth much in the enthusiast world. Even a 1978 Mark V in nice shape would be hard-pressed to find a forever home nowadays. At least it had a chance to visit the Norman Rockwell Museum in Massachusetts before the end. In what came to look like a very smart move by Ford, in light of certain geopolitical events in 1979, the Panther-based 1980 Continentals weighed nearly a half-ton less than this car.
Ford Q3 pretax profits drop to $1.18B
Fri, 24 Oct 2014Following positive third quarter financial results recently from General Motors, rival Ford took a tumble in Q3. The automaker posted pre-tax profits of $1.18 billion, compared to about $2.59 billion in Q3 2013, a drop of around 54 percent. Net income also suffered with $835 million made in the quarter, versus $1.272 billion last year, a decline of about 34 percent. The Blue Oval blamed the gloomy figures on three reasons in its release: "lower volume, higher warranty costs and adverse balance sheet exchange effects."
There were problems of one kind or another in practically every region. North America experienced higher warranty costs than expected, partially due to recalls. The sales volume for the quarter was 665,000 units, versus 725,000 in Q3 2013, and pre-tax results amounted to $1.41 billion versus $2.296 billion last year.
South America and Europe both posted worse pre-tax results than last year. On the bright side, European volume was up slightly to 321,000 vehicles, from 303,000 in Q3 2013. The Middle East and Africa also lost $15 million, but that was an improvement compared to the $25 million loss previously experienced in this region.
Ford issues recalls for Fiesta, Fusion, E-Series, and Lincoln MKZ
Wed, Mar 25 2020Ford has issued two new safety recalls for North America. The first covers certain 2014-15 Ford Fiestas, 2014-16 Ford Fusions, and 2014-16 Lincoln MKZs with doors that might not close properly. The second pertains to 2021 Ford E-Series stripped chassis and cutaway vehicles with a wiring harness that might chaffe and expose important wiring. Ford is recalling 268,343 Fiesta hatchbacks, Fusion sedans, and MKZ sedans across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with 248,912 of the affected vehicles located in the U.S. The recall says the "latch pawl spring-tab design" could crack in locations where the temperature gets too hot. If the tab breaks, the door might not shut. Or, worse, the door will shut temporarily and reopen once the vehicle is in motion. As a fix, Ford dealers will remove and replace the side door latches. In a separate recall, Ford is targeting 3,631 2021 E-Series stripped chassis and cutaway vehicles. These vehicles could have frame-mounted wiring harnesses that could deteriorate and break due to rubbing on the frame. If the chaffing wears down the harness, wiring for the fuel, trailer tow, and antilock braking systems could be exposed and damaged. In the worst-case scenario, the damage to the fuel pump wiring could cause the pump to stop working, which could stall the vehicle. Those with affected E-Series vehicles should bring them in to dealerships for inspection. If there is no damage, technicians will add anti-abrasion tape over the area and "ensure clearance to surrounding components." If the harness is damaged, the wiring will be spliced and fixed, then anti-abrasion tape will be added. Ford also issued a third recall, but it is specifically for the Canadian market. On 54,292 examples of 2006-10 Ford Fusions, 2006-10 Mercury Milans, and 2006-10 Lincoln MKZs, a valve inside the hydraulic control unit might stick open. According to Ford, this could result in a longer brake pedal travel, which could possibly create dangerous situations if the driver is unaware.
