This 1996 Lincoln Continental is in what most would consider better than average condition for the year and miles that I estimate to be around 115,000.  I estimate this because the Instrument cluster has stopped working.  No speedometer, odometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, etc., and no dash lights.  All other lights work as they should, as well as the climate controls and stereo, and other power accessories.  I bought this car for my wife in 2011.  It had just gone over the 100,000 mile mark at that time.  The car was used mainly for around-town driving and an occasional out of town trip.  It still starts, runs and drives well, and up until last month continued to be a daily driver, even with the problem it currently has.  The gauges went out about a year and a half ago, and we did notice the steering seems harder,  but the power steering unit is working. We continued to drive the car around town with no problems. This indicates to me that this could be a simple fix, possibly some kind of module, whatever controls the gauges?  I'm more of a paint and body man than a mechanic, and I've checked the fuses and put a used instrument cluster in it as well, but no change.  My wife and I both recently upgraded into newer vehicles, and the Lincoln has been parked for about a month.  I have no desire to spend any money to fix this car, because we don't need another vehicle to insure. Here's someone's chance to own a very nice, super clean Lincoln Continental that can be driven as is or repaired and driven for many years to come.  I will include in the sale the instrument cluster that I removed, as the used one I bought has been installed and will stay where it's at.  Please look closely at the pictures.  The only body damage is a very minor blemish to the left side of the rear bumper as seen in the pic, and of course a few parking lot door dings, and very few of those!  Interior is nice, a few small stains in carpet that will easily clean i'm sure, Leather seats in near perfect condition with no rips or tears, no dash cracks.  The inside door panel on the driver's door is showing wear, with a few cracks in the armrest as seen in the pic.The catalytic converters were replaced August 2011, and the rear air suspension (bags) were replaced with coil springs designed and made for the car.  Any questions please ask, I check my email and EBAY frequently, and can respond quickly. Please note that this vehicle is also for sale locally, and this listing will be removed if it does sell.  Reserve is set really low, Good luck and bid to win!

Ford's Galhotra succeeds Farley as head of Lincoln

Wed, 23 Jul 2014

Ford Motor Company is announcing a major personnel shakeup that could have a dramatic effect on the future of the Lincoln division. Kumar Galhotra (pictured above), currently vice president of engineering at Ford for all of its vehicles worldwide, is taking over as the president of the luxury brand on September 1, replacing Jim Farley. The automaker is also hiring a new head of advanced engineering.
Galhotra has a huge job ahead of him as the new boss of Lincoln worldwide, overseeing product development, marketing, sales and service. His task is to turn the luxury division into a world-class brand as quickly as possible, and he reports directly to Ford President and CEO Mark Fields.
"These changes underscore our commitment to build on the success of our One Ford plan by accelerating our pace of progress. They also make clear we are serious about Lincoln as a world-class luxury brand and that product excellence and innovation are what will deliver growth and define our entire company going forward," said Fields in the company's announcement.

NHTSA upgrades Ford floor mat unintended acceleration probe

Mon, 17 Dec 2012

According to a Bloomberg report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has upgraded an investigation into complaints of unintended acceleration lodged against Ford vehicles. The investigation began in June of 2010 when just three complaints had been received and it only concerned the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, but this was at a time when the phrase "unintended acceleration" made grown men go pale. With 49 additional complaints received since then, the investigation has been reclassified as an engineering analysis - the last phase before a recall - and it has been expanded to include the Lincoln MKZ, making for a total of "around 480,000" units affected between the three sedans from the 2008 to 2010 model years.
The ostensible cause is that floor mats are trapping the accelerator pedal, but according to a Ford statement at the time, the entrapment is due to owners placing the optional all-weather floor mats, or aftermarket floor mats, on top of the car's standard floor mats. NHTSA has backed up that assessment, pinning the blame on "unsecured or double stacked floor mats."
On the face of it, it would appear that NHTSA has upgraded the status not because of Ford's error, but owner error, and Ford has stated publicly that it is "disappointed" in NHTSA's move. On top of NHTSA still being skittish after that other unintended acceleration debacle, it could be seen to be taking its time investigating all of the variables: it's reported that Ford changed its accelerator pedal design in 2010, a "heel blocker" in the floorpan has been considered a potential culprit in how the floor mats could be trapping the pedal, some drivers have said the floor mats weren't anywhere near the pedal, and according to a report in the LA Times, in "a letter sent by Ford to NHTSA in August 2010, the automaker said it found three injuries and one fatality that 'may have resulted from the alleged defect.'"

Ford recalls 83k Taurus and crossover models for halfshaft issue

Fri, 15 Aug 2014

Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued a recall for some 83,250 vehicles in the US, for an issue with halfshafts. More specifically a "halfshaft retention circlip" might not have been properly installed on affected vehicles, with the result being halfshafts that may move improperly or disengage completely from the linkshaft while driving. The NHTSA release also notes that the issue may occur "without prior warning" which obviously factors in to the timeliness of getting this checked.
Should the halfshaft disengage, a few troubling things could happen. If it occurs while driving, power from the engine will no longer be transmitted to the wheels. And, if the vehicle is parked without the parking brake applied after disengagement of the circlip, vehicles may roll away even if they're transmissions have been placed in "Park."
Affected vehicles are as follows: Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossovers from model years 2012 to 2014; Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS sedans from model years 2013 to 2014; Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT vehicles from model years 2013 to 2014.
