Lincoln considering giving cars real names again

Enthusiastic reaction to the Continental concept might be the death knell for Lincoln's alphabet soup of monikers. "Without divulging the future, we're very excited about the Continental name and the attention it's gotten," Ford President of the Americas Joe Hinrichs said to Automotive News. Hinrichs admitted that the current MK names could confuse those not familiar with the models. Hinrichs suggested that one way Lincoln might differentiate itself was to "leverage its heritage." While this is certainly nothing explicit, the talk could be an indication of an upcoming overhaul for the brand's naming scheme. The Continental is set to hit the market next year as a replacement for the MKS as the company makes a major push into China. Lincoln bosses reportedly gave the designers the model name as inspiration for what to create. The brand's health has slowly been improving since former Ford CEO Alan Mulally was ready to completely kill the brand. McConaughey stars in new round of Lincoln ads

Matthew McConaughey's ruminative commercial work with the Lincoln MKC, MKZ, and MKZ Hybrid showed us a side of Lincoln we didn't know existed, and a bunch of spoofs made us laugh about it. Most importantly, though, the partnership worked, leading to a double-digit increase in sales and millions of hits in brand exposure. That's why the actor and the automaker are back together, McConaughey scheduled to return in a new commercial campaign launching September 2 for the 2016 Lincoln MKX. He'll give up the air of cosmopolitan sage, because these ads "dial up the swagger factor" according to Lincoln's group marketing manager John Emmert. Introduced earlier this year at the Detroit Motor Show, the brand put a lot of work into the all-new model, said to be "much improved in how it rides, steers, brakes and looks," offering a more powerful engine, and at least 36 new features including adaptive lighting. Ford's first production implementation of adaptive steering, and Harman's first automobile application of Revel audio will bow with the mid-sized crossover. On top of all that, it's also got that lower price. Emmert said the McConaughey ads will point out "the technology and the beauty of the vehicle." Ford faces class-action lawsuit for selling vehicles without brake override systems

A total of 20 Ford customers are suing the automaker in a class-action lawsuit for selling vehicles "vulnerable to unintended acceleration." According to Reuters, the suit names 30 models built between 2002 and 2010 with electronic throttle control systems but without a brake override system. Those include the 2004-2012 F-Series pickups and the 2005-2009 Lincoln Town Car. Adam Levitt, a partner with the law firm of Grant & Eisenhofer says the plaintiffs in the case want "to be compensated for their economic losses by having overpaid for cars that contained defects." Levitt contends that the plaintiffs would not have bought their vehicles or paid less for them had they known there was no brake override system in place.
Ford began installing brake override systems in its vehicles beginning in 2010. In response to the lawsuit, Ford has pointed to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that indicated that unintended acceleration is mostly caused by driver error, saying in a statement that, "NHTSA's work is far more scientific and trustworthy than work done by personal injury lawyers and their paid experts."
Belville et al v. Ford Motor Co. will be heard in US District Court in the Southern District of West Virginia.
