Lehmann-Peterson was founded in 1963 when Robert "Pete" Peterson met George "Skip" Lehmann. Robert Peterson was in auto racing and for many years he was a chief mechanic, building racers for use at Indianapolis. George Lehmann at the age of 21 had recieved a large inheritance from his father who died in Boston's Coconut Grove Night Club fire.

In a small Chicago garage on Harlem Avenue they took a 1963 Lincoln cut it in half and added a 34 inch stretch. They also added their plaque which read "Executive Limousine by Lehmann-Peterson". Only one prototype was constructed in the Harlem Avenue garage. (When production began, operations were moved to a shop at 2710 North Sawyer Avenue and one on Armitage Street)

Ford was impressed with the 1963 prototype especially the seating arrangement which created a conversation area atmosphere. Ford kept the car for further testing being concerned about safety and the strength of the frame with the additional length. Then on February 25, 1964, after 40,000 miles of testing, Ford and Lehmann-Peterson reached an agreement.

It was first displayed at the New York International Automobile Show in April, 1964. Over the next 6 years Lehmann-Peterson produced around 600 limousines for government official, business executive, numerous celebrities including Jackie Gleason, Spencer Tracy, The Supremes, The Rolling Stones, Sophia Loren, Jerry Lewis, Robert Vaughn, Victor Borge, Senator Robert Kennedy, Aristotle Onassis and even a 1964 "Popemobile".

A Lehmann-Peterson Limousine treatment of a standard Lincoln Continental Sedan usually took 27 days to complete in the small northwest Chicago shop employing about 40 men (Lehmann said there were six shop employees. So either there were fewer, or the other people employed did not work regularly in the shop).

2.5 days  Disassembly of the factory sedan, removal of pertinent interior components, mechanical and electrical parts, to begin cuffing the unibody.
2.5 days  Work of the welding rack, including finishing the cut, setting up the weld of the extension, including the addition of much structural steel.
2.5 days  Installation of roof portion of body, the extended drive shaft, extended fuel line, extended brake line, and the modified exhaust system.
2.5 days  Installation, alignment, and welding of center panels.
2.5 days  Painting the exterior of the body.
5.0 days  Installation of wiring, air conditioning, heater.
2.5 days  Installation of interior headliner and exterior vinyl top.
5.0 days  Fitting and completion of interior upholstery, carpet, and trim.
2.5 days  Testing vehicle and polishing the exterior.

27.0 days  Total required for the Lehmann-Peterson conversion.

Lincoln did not like to admit it, but these limos were even more rigid than the already super-rigid unibody production cars

Report: Lincoln getting all of Mercury's ad dollars

Mon, 03 Jan 2011

Now that the curtain has closed on Mercury, Ford Motor Company will redirect all of its marketing dollars for the oft-overlooked brand to the Blue Oval's luxury outpost, Lincoln. In speaking to Automotive News, the chairman of the Lincoln National Dealer Council, Bob Tasca, Jr., said, "You'll see a lot stronger presence in the advertising of Lincoln in 2011."
Lincoln spokesperson Christian Bokich reminded AN that the automaker is "preparing the way for seven new or significantly refreshed vehicles" that will be launched over the next four years, and the largest ad blitz in 2011 will focus on the refreshed MKX crossover, as well as the MKZ sedan and its hybrid counterpart. Following that, Lincoln has plans to launch a completely overhauled version of its Navigator SUV, an all-new C-segment vehicle and the overhauled 2013 MKZ, which Tasca says will be "strikingly different from its Ford Fusion sibling."

Dan Neil pokes fun at the celeb cars of 2014

Sun, Dec 28 2014

Look, we try really hard not to pay any attention to the Kardashians and their vapid reality TV empire. But, as troubling as that brood may be, occasionally we're impressed and/or horrified by their four-wheeled conveyances. In fact, that curiosity extends beyond talentless reality stars with rotund glutes to celebs in general. That's why we're enjoying Dan Neil's sometimes biting take on the celebrity cars of 2014. Besides paying tribute to Kim K, husband Kanye West and the adorable Lamborghini that their spawn rides about in, Neil also takes a look at LeBron James' turn as a Kia spokesman and boxer Floyd Mayweather's trio of Bugatti Veyrons. Matthew McConaughey is a focus of Neil's as well, thanks to his oft-panned advertisements for Lincoln (and the raucous parodies they inspired), before finishing on the high, with Jerry Seinfeld and his new Porsche 918 Spyder. Take a look at Neil's recap of the celebrity cars of 2014. News Source: The Wall Street Journal Celebrities Humor Bugatti Kia Lamborghini Lincoln Porsche Videos porsche 918 spyder celebrity dan neil

Preposed class-action lawsuit targets 'defective' MyFord Touch

Tue, 16 Jul 2013

A national law firm, Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP, has filed a proposed class action lawsuit whose presupposition is that MyFord Touch is defective. Specifically, the complaint states that the system - as well as the MyLincoln Touch and MyMercury Touch clones - often freeze, fail to respond to voice or touch commands and have issues connecting to mobile phones.
According to Hagens Berman managing partner Steve Berman, MyFord Touch is a theoretically "brilliant idea" that falls short in actual execution. Said Berman in a press release, "In reality, the system is fundamentally flawed, failing to reliably provide functionality, amounting to an inconvenience at best, and a serious safety issue at worst."
Other MFT issues enumerated within the 41-page filing include problems controlling the window defroster, rear-view camera and navigation system. The suit maintains that Ford is aware of the problem but has yet to submit a workable and acceptable solution to MFT customers. Scroll down if you'd like to read the full press release.
