Solid original car with just one repaint. Top is fully functional! Nice older repaint, good leather interior, no issues underneath. Not perfect, but a nice cruiser that will appreciate with a bit of TLC. This 1966 Continental convertible is a nicely preserved survivor that seems to have enjoyed just a single repaint in its five decades of life. Royal Maroon is the car's original color, a rich burgundy with a bit of gold underneath that looks right on the massive convertible. Judging from the door jambs and other isolated areas, the color match is extremely close to the factory finish and the overall patina of the repaint would make it rather easy to pass it off as a 100% original car. The chrome and trim are quite likely original 1966 pieces, so none of it is perfect, but it all suits the car so well that it would be a shame to restore it. Lenses, glass, and other delicate parts all remain in very good shape and there's still nothing like showing up at an event in 19 feet of Continental ragtop with a little character. The black leather interior is likewise original and well-preserved, albeit showing some signs of age. The seating surfaces show moderate wear and some light cracking, but no major splits or tears, and as with the bodywork, it's probably just too nice to restore—give the leather some conditioning and it'll look just right. Accessories include factory A/C, power windows and seat, tilt steering column, AM/8-track stereo radio with power antenna, and a stylish clock in front of the passenger. Perhaps most critical on any of these cars are the incredibly complex top mechanisms, which were derived from the folding hardtop system found on the 1950s Ford Retractables. Hit the switch under the dash or use the convenient key-operated switch on the quarter panel (which provides trunk access from the rear-hinged deck lid), and the nicely-fitted white top disappears into the trunk in a mechanical ballet that you could probably sell tickets to attend. Lincoln's massive 462 cubic inch V8 provides the kind of grunt that makes moving almost 6000 pounds of sheetmetal feel effortless, and these cars are superlative long-distance cruisers. Obviously freshened with a coat of corporate Ford Blue paint, the big V8 starts easily and idles so smoothly that you're tempted to hit the starter even after it's already running. It remains in stock condition with no modifications save for routine maintenance items and it's quite likely that the mileage shown is authentic given the condition of the mechanical components. The undercarriage shows a light coat of undercoating material that hides nothing, so it's easy to see that the critical areas are in good order. Original factory assembly markings are still visible on many of the components and where the rustproofing compound has worn away, the original red oxide primer is visible, more evidence that this car has never been rusty or wrecked. Other recent components include the mufflers and tailpipes, which give it a muscular exhaust note that suits the big luxury car just fine. The original wheels and hubcaps are protected by a set of recent 235/75/15 Dayton whitewall tires that look exactly right on the big ragtop. We know this isn't a perfect car. The interior is 50 years old and might be showing a few signs of age, but things like the bodywork and undercarriage are extremely solid and perhaps most importantly, the top works like it should. Like many formerly affordable cars, these suicide door Lincoln convertibles have been steadily appreciating and finding one that isn't a basket case or a $50,000 investment is getting harder all the time. Lincoln Aviator vs Cadillac XT6 | How they compare on paper

There have been big, three-row family crossovers for quite a while now, but until recently the luxury market hasn't fully embraced them. Sure, you could literally get one with a third row, but unless you were a kid, chances are the term "dungeon-like" was going to be tossed around. Things are changing now, however, as new and redesigned entries are starting to hit the market. We've recently had a chance to get our first drives of the 2020 Lincoln Aviator and 2020 Cadillac XT6, two all-new three-row crossovers from American luxury brands. We also got a turn behind the wheel of the updated 2020 Volvo XC90. However, since none of our editors have yet to drive to drive them all, we wanted to see how they compare on paper, examining their engine specs and interior dimensions. We also included the 2020 Acura MDX, the original three-row luxury crossover, which continues to sell well despite approaching the end of its current generation. That it offers a hybrid model makes it that much more applicable given the Aviator and XC90 also offer gasoline-electric powertrains, albeit of the plug-in variety. 3 Row Luxury Crossovers Powertrains View 1 Photos Non-hybrid MDX has a 5,000-pound max tow rating. How do their performance and fuel economy compare? This one is absolutely no contest. The 400-horsepower Lincoln blows away its competitors despite having a price tag that's similar to the 310-horsepower Cadillac and in between the XC90's T5 and T6 models. At least the Acura is considerably cheaper. Besides the eye-popping output, the estimated 0-60-mph time of 5.5 seconds (gleaned from the mechanically similar Ford Explorer ST) is appreciably quicker than the others. Now, fuel economy is a bit lower, but the efficiency of Volvo's four-cylinder engines are likely more susceptible to varying due to driver differences. It should also be noted that the Cadillac gets the same combined fuel economy estimate as the Aviator despite having 90 fewer horses and 144 fewer pound-feet of torque. Just one of the ways where the XT6's prospects dim in the presence of its cross-Michigan rival. The Cadillac is also not available as a hybrid model. The others are, but are disparate. The Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring and Volvo XC90 T8 are similar in concept: range-topping models that are as much about adding performance as they are fuel economy. Their hefty price tags certainly reflect that as well.

If there's one brand that could really use some fresh, all-new product, it's Lincoln. The MKC crossover is on the way and looks promising, but the just-revealed 2015 model year update of its fullsize Navigator would appear to stop somewhere short of being "all-new." This, despite replacing a product that's been on the market since 2007. Oh sure, there's a brash new face, complete with the company's love or hate split-wing grille, and the revised rear-end treatment does look better to our eyes (if overly familiar). But in the era of the bold new all-aluminum Ford F-150, the Navigator is still based on the outgoing model's all-steel bones, so it's more of an extensive mid-cycle refresh than a completely new piece.

That's a shame, really, because the class the Navigator is playing in features a host of really modern, stylish, luxurious crossovers and sport utilities like the Cadillac Escalade, Land Rover Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz GL-Class and more. Unlike the F-150, there's no aluminum suit on this black-tie bruiser, but that's not to say it isn't bringing some new tech to the table in 2015. Under the hood, for example, is Ford's well-received 3.5-liter, twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6, putting out "at least" 370 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. That's a solid engine, and should be a whole lot more spunky and efficient than the archaic 5.4-liter Triton V8 currently being employed in the outgoing model.

Christmas is only a week away. The New Year is just around the corner. As 2014 draws to a close, I'm not the only one taking stock of the year that's we're almost shut of. Depending on who you are or what you do, the end of the year can bring to mind tax bills, school semesters or scheduling dental appointments. For me, for the last eight or nine years, at least a small part of this transitory time is occupied with recalling the cars I've driven over the preceding 12 months. Since I started writing about and reviewing cars in 2006, I've done an uneven job of tracking every vehicle I've been in, each year. Last year I made a resolution to be better about it, and the result is a spreadsheet with model names, dates, notes and some basic facts and figures. Armed with this basic data and a yen for year-end stories, I figured it would be interesting to parse the figures and quantify my year in cars in a way I'd never done before. The results are, well, they're a little bizarre, honestly. And I think they'll affect how I approach this gig in 2015. {C} My tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015 it'll be as high as 73. Let me give you a tiny bit of background about how automotive journalists typically get cars to test. There are basically two pools of vehicles I drive on a regular basis: media fleet vehicles and those available on "first drive" programs. The latter group is pretty self-explanatory. Journalists are gathered in one location (sometimes local, sometimes far-flung) with a new model(s), there's usually a day of driving, then we report back to you with our impressions. Media fleet vehicles are different. These are distributed to publications and individual journalists far and wide, and the test period goes from a few days to a week or more. Whereas first drives almost always result in a piece of review content, fleet loans only sometimes do. Other times they serve to give context about brands, segments, technology and the like, to editors and writers. So, adding up the loans I've had out of the press fleet and things I've driven at events, my tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015, it'll be as high as 73. At one of the buff books like Car and Driver or Motor Trend, reviewers might rotate through five cars a week, or more. I know that number sounds high, but as best I can tell, it's pretty average for the full-time professionals in this business.
