This is a family member's car, not my personal car, but I have driven it quite a bit recently. It's in good shape for its age and mileage (176K), starts right up, absolutely flawless and smooth runner and driver, handles beautifully, and everything seems to work. Brought up here from southern CA last year. Tires look good and have around 50% to 60% tread left.

The only problems I've spotted are (a) a slight oil seepage from the valve cover gasket area (b) the front plastic bumper cover is a bit loose and rattles when you go over a bump (c) the driver's seat bottom has an open seam that needs to be re-sewed and (d) there are several deep paint scratches as well as dings and creases along the right rear, trunk lid and lower shroud areas (see photos). Both keys are included but the housing for the remote is cracked (still works fine).  Low reserve price reflects these easy-to-fix deficiencies.

Unless we find service records while digging through boxes, we don't have any for this car, but I believe it was serviced regularly based on its excellent running condition. Please ask questions or arrange for an inspection prior to bidding.

This car is being offered for sale locally. This car is being sold as-is and all sales are final. If you want to fly in and pick up the car, we can pick you up at PDX which is just a few minutes away. Good luck in your bids!

Any payment method other than cash will have to clear the bank before we release the vehicle - even cashier's checks, which can be forged. Clearing the bank can take up to 5 business days. Cash is best.

Thomas Davy Sharples

9/3/1916 – 6/20/2013

Tom Sharples was the youngest son of a famed Philadelphia area industrialist Philip M. Sharples, inventor and manufacturer of the Sharples Cream Separator. As a US Army Captain in post-war Germany, he used his expertise in photography and engineering to help rebuild the Leica, Leitz, Minox, and Zeiss optics plants after their near total destruction during the war, and this piqued a lifelong interest in collection, preservation, and restoration of unique optical and scientific equipment and artifacts. An accomplished photographer and design engineer, Tom was an avid photographer and aficionado of all things related to precision optics and camera technologies, and since January 1, 1940 a lifelong member of the Photographic Society of America.

Young Tom grew up at Greystone Hall in West Chester, PA and spent as much time of his time as possible learning everything he could about science, literature, art, mechanical engineering, chemistry and photography. A birthright Quaker, Tom attended George School and Westtown Academy – their yearbooks speak in awe of the “quiet genius” that was already emerging. After graduating high school Tom went on to study at Swarthmore College in PA, then studied engineering at California Institute of Technology. During this time Tom also operated his own photography studio and experimented with advanced color film processing and development.

When WWII broke out Tom left college and enlisted in the US Army, attending OCS where he graduated and received his commission as a US Army Officer. He served as a Second Lieutenant in Sardinia, and later as a Captain in post-war Germany. While serving in Germany, Tom met his wife Renate, who was working as a technical translator for the American Military Government. The two married in 1948 and moved to Philadelphia, where Tom went to work at the Sharples Corporation as Director of Research. He was in charge of design and development of the Sharples line of industrial process centrifuges. During his lifetime Tom was awarded more than 50 patents in the fields of process engineering and medical, optical, and industrial technology.

Tom and Renate raised two sons in Plymouth Meeting and later at a 54 acre farm in Skippack, PA. In 1966 the family moved to the California Bay Area where Tom worked in senior technical design and management roles including Chief Engineer at the Spinco Division of Beckman Instruments in Palo Alto. Tom retired in 1991 after 25 years at Spinco, and he and his wife moved to a beautiful ranch in the hills of Eugene OR where they lived together until just a few months before his death.

The revolutionary Bose suspension that could have been

Mon, Feb 8 2016

The Bose name pops up on these pages every once in a while – usually, as you might expect, because some automaker or another has installed its audio systems in one or more of its models. But a few years back, the research-driven audiophiles at Bose developed a revolutionary adaptive suspension system that could have been a game-changer. Sadly, it wasn't. The Bose suspension system was a technological breakthrough. As you can see from the pair of Lexus LS sedans demonstrated (and the Porsche Cayman thrown in for good measure) in the two-minute video above from CNET, the system virtually eliminated body roll and smoothed out bumps in the road to near glass-like serenity. It could even jump over minor obstacles. Unfortunately, the system was too heavy and expensive to put into production, and the project was shelved. Instead, it was repackaged into a suspended driver's seat for heavy-duty, long-haul trucks and called the Bose Ride System. It's said to significantly reduce fatigue and back pain while encouraging driver alertness and wellness – which is all well and fine, but a far cry from what the suspension system could have meant for the automotive industry. Just think about that the next time you notice the Bose logo on the speaker grille in an upscale vehicle from the likes of Audi, FCA, GM, Mazda, or Nissan – all automakers that offer Bose audio systems, and which might have considered implementing the advanced suspension if only it were more practical for production. Watch these Super Bowl car commercials [UPDATE]

Sat, Feb 2 2019

On Sunday, February 3, the New England Patriots take on the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 53 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Some will watch because of the storyline of the old-school dynasty facing off against the new-school wunderkinds, but a large chunk of people will solely be watching for the commercials. Lucky for those who slot into the latter category, many of the manufacturers release their super bowl ads ahead of time, or have simply opted to release the commercials only online. Scroll down to see what car companies have already shown their cards. Audi Audi goes the comedic route in its clip for the Big Game. It starts with a grandpa showing his grandson a gorgeous Audi e-tron GT tucked away in a garage before he's shaken awake. Turns out he was just choking on a cashew in his cubicle at his boring job. Dodge Dodge does what it knows: create enough smoke to punch more holes in the ozone layer. Set to "The Devil Went Down to Georgia (the Super Bowl is in Atlanta, get it!?), a Challenger SRT Hellcat widebody, Charger SRT Hellcat, and Durango SRT are seen ripping through a city, leaving a trail of rubber crumbs in their wakes. Genesis Genesis has not yet released a commercial prior to the Super Bowl, but it is the official luxury vehicle of the NFL. Because of this, Genesis is hosting a fan experience for 10 days before the game. It will showcase the brand's cars, offer games, and have photos opportunities and autograph days. Hyundai Jason Bateman alert! Hyundai is one of the few companies to hook a major celebrity for its advertisement, and the casting is perfect. Bateman plays a doorman who takes people to various terrible events in life, including root canals, the middle seat, and shopping for a car. The ad centers around Hyundai's Shopper Assurance, which is Hyundai's new method for car shopping. Jeep An old 1963 Jeep Gladiator finds its strength in the crusher and transforms into a a new 2020 Gladiator, with a firm declaration that the nameplate is officially back. Kia Through Kia's commercial, a young boy wonders out loud what it'd be like if the millions spent on Super Bowl commercials were used to help others.

Lexus teases new luxury concept for Tokyo

Wed, Oct 21 2015

Lexus certainly doesn't want to reveal any secrets about the concept premiering at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show on October 28. The company's teaser simply shows a squinting LED headlight with a devilish, hooked tail running underneath. Plus, the dearth of descriptive text merely says that the vehicle is a "vision of progressive luxury." While there's not much useful info, some recent rumors might hint at what we're looking at. One possibility is the concept providing a peek at the next-gen LS because the rounded, current generation no longer matches the rest of the Japanese brand's sharper styling. Reports earlier this year even suggest a fuel-cell version under development as part of a hydrogen push in Japan. This range-topping model could potentially weigh even less than the current hybrid by adapting the powertrain from the Toyota Mirai. The less likely alternative is a concept pointing the way towards Lexus' second flagship. Reportedly a successor to the SC, the model isn't rumored to debut until the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. Still, the company could shuffle things around, and we look forward to seeing what's worth being so coy about in Tokyo in just a few days.
