When Lexus launched there IS 300 sedan in 2001, their target could not have been more clearly defined: the BMW 3-Series. Equipped with a 3.0L in-line six, the rear-wheel-drive sedan (and the wagon, beginning in 2002) emphasized the car's sporty nature, and some Lexus luxury came attached.The 2007 Lexus junior sport sedans now have luxury built into their DNA and are available with a choice of drivetrains. The IS 250 has a 2.5L V6 that makes 204 horsepower and 185 lb-ft. of torque. It comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, but a six-speed automatic with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters is an available option. Also available is an IS 250 all-wheel-drive sedan, equipped only with the automatic transmission.The IS 350 as the premier member of the IS family. This rear-wheel-drive sedan has a 24-valve 3.5L V6 with variable valve timing that makes a healthy 306 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. This athlete uses its six-speed automatic to sprint to 60 mph in only 5.6 seconds, on its way up to a top speed of 142 mph.The IS 350 offers a sharp response off the line, and the power allows easy merging in traffic. The power of the IS 250 is still sporty, just not as seductive as the bigger motor. The ride from the 225/45R17 front and 245/45R17 rear tires is taut, and the handling is sharp. The electric power steering found in all IS models feels competent.Aside from the drivetrain, the IS 250 RWD, IS 250 AWD, and IS 350 models are all similarly well-equipped. Power everything, automatic climate control, air bags all around, and a 13-speaker sound system with six-disc CD changer are standard. The only notable exception is that the all-wheel-drive IS 250 has power heated and ventilated front leather seats whereas the rest of the model lineup must order the seat heaters separately.There are plenty of safety features built into this Lexus. Besides offering four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, all models come with brake assist, traction control, a tire pressure warning system, and other electronic safety nets. Best of these is the Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management. Simply put, this combination of sensors and electronic controls can help prevent spins before they occur, instead of waiting to correct them after they start. It comes standard on the IS 350 and optional on the IS 250.A number of optional packages allow luxury items to be tacked on at will. The X Package adds larger alloy wheels, performance tires, a sport-tuned suspension, and alloy pedals. The Premium Package adds perforated leather seats with heating and ventilation to the rear-wheel-drive models. A Luxury Package adds xenon auto-leveling headlights with adaptive front lighting, electrochromic exterior mirrors with memory, and rain sensing wipers to all ISs, as well as the upgraded perforated leather seats found in the Premium Package to the rear-wheel-drive models. A Sport Package is available on the IS 350, and it adds a combination of the equipment found on the X and Luxury Packages.Other options include a state-of the art navigation system with Bluetooth capability, adaptive cruise control with a pre-collision system that prepares the seatbelts and air bags for an unavoidable collision, the latest generation of park assist, and a number of audio system enhancements.

Meet the Greenest and Meanest vehicles of 2016
Wed, Jan 27 2016If you've been keeping track, you won't be surprised with the number one entry in this year's list of greenest cars from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). In fact, the top three spots on the 2016 list are all the same as they were in 2015. After that, things get interesting. For one thing, this is the first Greenest list that doesn't have any purely internal combustion engine powertrain on it. Hybrids, yes, but if you want to be one of the top 12 greenest cars this year, you'd better have some sort of electric angle. ACEEE says that the conventional, gas-powered Smart Fortwo and Chevrolet Spark just missed the cut. In a statement, ACEEE lead vehicle analyst Shruti Vaidyanathan said, "The 2016 scores are in, and plug-in electric vehicles are outpacing all other vehicle offerings in terms of environmental friendliness." Like last year, one of the noticeable vehicles missing from the green list is the Tesla Model S. One reason? ACEEE takes curb weight into account (lighter is better), and the Model S is a heavy beast. The ACEEE doesn't just look at the clean side of the ledger. It also puts out a "meanest" list. These are the vehicles that pollute the most, not only from their tailpipes, but also any pollution created during the entire manufacturing process, from mining the raw materials to the energy used to produce the vehicle at the factory. Lexus ends partnership with Weinstein Co. and 'Project Runway'
Tue, Oct 24 2017Lexus has been a long-time sponsor of fashion reality competition show Project Runway, providing a car to the contest's winner and sponsoring at least one specific "challenge" per season. Only last week, a Lexus NX 200t was featured and used as inspiration for the remaining group of fashion designers. This would seem to be the last season that will happen, however, as Lexus has ended its partnership with the show's production company, Weinstein Co., after sexual harassment allegations leveled at Harvey Weinstein. "Lexus has chosen to terminate its agreement with The Weinstein Company that saw the luxury automaker working with the film studio on certain film and television projects," a company spokesperson wrote in a statement to Reuters. Last week, Lexus indicated it was "evaluating" its relationship with Weinstein Company. One would imagine this delay was the result of that week's episode featuring Lexus substantially more than usual. Related Video:

I'm senior editor Greg Migliore and this is your Autoblog Minute Weekly Recap. A UAW strike of FCA was avoided thanks to a zero-hour tentative agreement reached this week. Worker concerns that were renegotiated in the new [00:00:30] deal include adjustments to the two-tier wage scale, health care costs, and production outsourcing. Now check-in with Autoblog as we update our reports on this evolving story. Shooting began on Amazon Prime's new automotive show starring the former Top Gear crew. That's Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May. Now Clarkson threw out a tweet from day one of filming on location at Algarve Motor Park in Portugal. The picture features the show's [00:01:00] three stars and crew posing with the holy trinity of hyper cars. That's a McLaren P1, a Ferrari LaFerrari, and a Porsche 918 Spyder. This Prime show is being called Gear Knobs though the name is unofficial. Now if a tweet is any indication of what we can expect, who cares what it's called this is gonna be awesome. (Eds Note: Clarkson tweeted Friday that the show will not be called Gear Knobs.) Toyota predicts drivers could be obsolete on highways as early as 2020, with technology dubbed the Toyota Highway Teammate or THT. Toyota is using a modified [00:01:30] Lexus GS to show what this is capable of. THT is already able to create a driverless freeway car that's capable of changing lanes, making passes and taking curves. Plus, it can keep safe distances from other vehicles.
